【题目】Like many new graduates, I left university full of hope for the future but with no real idea of what I wanted to do. My degree, with honors, in English literature had not really prepared me for anything practical. I knew I wanted to make a difference in the world somehow, but I had no idea how to do that. That’s when I learned about the Lighthouse Project.
I started my journey as a Lighthouse Project volunteer by reading as much as I could about the experiences of previous volunteers. I knew it would be a lot of hard work, and that I would be away from my family and friends for a very long time. In short, I did not take my decision to apply for the Lighthouse Project lightly. Neither did my family.
Eventually, however, I won the support of my family, and I sent in all the paperwork needed for the application. After countless interviews and presentations, I managed to stand out among the candidates and survive the test alone. Several months later, I finally received a call asking me to report for the duty. I would be going to a small village near Abuja, Nigeria. Where? What? Nigeria? I had no idea. But I was about to find out.
After completing my training, I was sent to the village that was small and desperately in need of proper accommodation. Though the local villagers were poor, they offered their homes, hearts, and food as if I were their own family. I was asked to lead a small team of local people in building a new schoolhouse. For the next year or so, I taught in that same schoolhouse. But I sometimes think I learned more from my students than they did from me.
Sometime during that period, I realized that all those things that had seemed so strange or unusual to me no longer did, though I did not get anywhere with the local language, and I returned to the United States a different man. The Lighthouse Project had changed my life forever.

Specialists say it is not easy to get used to life in a new culture.“Culture shock”is the term these specialists use when talking about the feelings that people have in a new environment. There are three stages of culture shock, say the specialists. In the first stage, the newcomers like their new environment. Then, when the fresh experience dies, they begin to hate the city, the country, the people, and everything else.In the last stage, the newcomers begin to adjust to their surrounding and, as a result, enjoy their life more.
There are some obvious factors(因素)in culture shock. The weather may be unpleasant. The customs may be different. The public service systems-the telephones, post office, or transportation-may be difficult to work out.The simplest things seem to be big problems. The language may be difficult.
Who feels culture shock? Everyone does in this way or that. But culture shock surprises most people.Very often the people having the worst culture shock are those who never had any difficulties in their community.Coming to a new country, these people find they do not have the same established positions. They find themselves without any identify(身份).They have to build a new self-image.
Culture shock gives rise to a feeling of disorientation(迷失方向).This feeling may be homesickness. When homesick, people feel like staying inside all the time. They want to protect themselves from the strange environment, and create an escape inside their room for a sense of security(安全).This escape does solve the problem of culture shock for the short time, but it does nothing to make the person familiar with the culture.Getting to know the new environment and gaining experience-these are the long-term solutions to the problem of culture shock.

【题目】阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
When I was small and my grandmother died, I couldn’t understand why I had no tears. But that night when my dad tried to cheer me up, my laugh turned into crying.
So it came as no surprise to learn that researchers believe crying and laughing come from the same part of the brain.Just as laughing has many health advantages, scientists are discovering that so, too, does crying.
Whatever it takes for us to reduce pressure is important to our emotional(情感的) health, and crying seems to work well. One study found that 85 % of women and 73% of men report feeling better after crying.
Besides, tears attract help from other people Researchers agree that when we cry, people around us become kinder and friendlier and they are more ready to provide support and comfort.Tears also enable us to understand our emotions better; sometimes we don’t even know we’re very sad until we cry.We learn about our emotions through crying, and then we can deal with them.
Just as crying can be healthy, not crying – holding back tears of anger, pain or suffering- can be bad for physical(身体的) health.Studies have shown that too much control of emotions can lead to high blood pressure, heart problems and some other illnesses. If you have a health problem, doctors will certainly not ask you to cry.But when you feel like crying, don’t fight it.It’s a natural – and healthy- emotional response(反应)。
