    　　Tens of thousands of couples across the United States are racing to get married by April 30．This is the result of a new law that makes illegal(不合法的)immigrants(移民) legal(合法的)if they marry by then．

    　　The law has sent marriages rising by 50 percent to 300 percent this year in immigrant-rich Los Angeles, Houston and New York．The new law, passed in the last days of the Clinton administration(任期)，contains a large number of measures to help immigrants and their loved ones become legal．

    　　Demand for marriage licenses in Manhattan this year jumped from 100 a day to more than 300．The Los Angeles County registrar(户籍员)recorder's office supplied 12 997 marriage licences during January and February, and 59 percent increase over last year．

    　　Critics say the new law encourages false marriage．There are a lot of frauds as people rush to make use of this window．In the past cases citizens or legal residents were paid US ＄10 000 or more to marry illegal immigrants in which immigration is concluded may be investigated for as long as the years after the vows．

    　　“It's not worth the risk to attempt an illegal marriage, ”says INS spokesman Bill Strassberger．

    On July 4,1986, Americans celebrated the Staue of Liberty’s 100th birthday. Parades, speeches, fireworks, and other activities contributed to the great joy of the event. The celebration caused reporters and the local people to look back a century to the similar great joy that marked the official opening of the statue. The Statue of Liberty was completed in 1886, but the story began earlier. The idea for a statue was first suggested at a dinner party by Edouard de Laboulaye, a French historian. A guest at the party was Frederic Bartholdi, a young sculptor.

    Most people who attended the dinner party soon forgot the idea, but Laboulaye and Bartholdi remembered it. In 1871, Bartholdi came to the United States to interest Americans in a statue that would link France and the United States in friendship. Many people in France had already been persuaded and contributed money to the project. Americans were also persuaded to build a fund (基金) for the statue. Much of the money came from schoolchildren.

    After the idea had been accepted, Bartholdi set to work. He worked hard for many years. His friend Laboulaye died before the statue was completed. At last, in 1885, the statue was sent to the United States. It had to be shipped in sections and then put together for its weight and size.

    David Beckham made a losing start to his second season in Major League Soccer when his Los Angeles Galaxy team were crushed 4 – 0 by the Colorado Rapids on Saturday.

    Beckham, in his first game since reaching 100 international caps for England in a friendly against France on Wednesday, played in a variety of different positions as head coach Ruud Gullit tried in vain to find a successful formation.

    “I find it hard not to criticize some of the decisions tonight but I’ve been told I’ll be fined if I do,” said Beckham. “But certain decisions change games. I think that has happened tonight.”

    Cummings added Colorado’s third goal on 67 minutes before Colin Clark scored the fourth with 10 minutes left. 

    Xavier was sent off late in the game for using abusive language towards referee Abiodun Okulaja and Colorado substitute Ciaran O’Brien was also dismissed after a foul on Carlos Ruiz.
