【题目】Everyone Can Help to Save the World

We are all environmentalists now.We all know about acid rain and the ozone hole.1 As consumers we have the power to make decisions which will contribute to a better world and it is in our power to do what we can to protect the Earth.

2 In this way we have the power to influence retailers(零售商) to sell us these so-called “green” products. Therefore, the supermarkets have understood the message and are now trying to improve their environmental image. They are turning to less wasteful and recyclable packaging. The range of “green” products will continue to expand to meet the growing demand. This message has also reached the manufacturers.3 They have realized that protecting the environment may start as an advertising campaign, but in the hands of intelligent people it can become a very profitable business.

Furthermore, we also know there are other areas where all of us can make a positive contribution to a cleaner, healthier and safer environment.4 There are a number of ways we can do this. For example, we now know how important it is to have our homes well insulated(隔热).We should choose the best energy efficient technology, such as modern light bulbs which can reduce electricity consumption by 80% over the older ones.We must also work hard to reduce the amount of rubbish we produce.

In conclusion it is important to emphasize once again the rise of consumer power. We must realize that we are all part of the problem.5

A.But what are we doing about these problems?

B.There are some other ways to protect the environment.

C.Everybody has the duty to contribute to a cleaner world.

D.We can reduce energy consumption at home to cut the emissions from power systems.

E.Nevertheless we must also realize that we have the responsibility to be part of the solution.

【题目】Our plan was to drive into Cambridge, catch the 7:34 train to Liverpool Street Station, then to separate and meet again for lunch. We should have arrived at Liverpool at 9:19, but due to a typical London fog, the train had to move along so slowly that it was not until 10:30 that it got there. In spite of our late arrival, Joan, my wife’s sister, decided that she would go to see the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London while we went shopping. It was only after her sister had disappeared into the fog that my wife realized that we hadn’t decided where we should meet for lunch. Since I had our three tickets for the concert in my pocket, this was indeed a problem. There seemed to be nothing we could do except taking a taxi to the Tower of London, and try to find her there. Needless to say, we didn’t find her.

It was now one o’clock, and the concert began at 2:30. “Perhaps she will think of waiting outside the concert hall,” suggested my wife hopefully. By this time the fog was so thick that road traffic had to stop, and the only way to get there was by underground railway. Hand in hand we felt our way along the road to where we thought the nearest station should be. An hour later we were still trying to find it. Just as I was about to lose my temper completely when we met a blind man tapping his way confidently through the fog. With his help we found Tower Hill tube station just fifty yards down the road.

By now it was far too late even to try to get to the concert hall before the performance began at 2:30, so we decided to return to Cambridge. It took seven long hours instead of the usual two to make that journey. Nor were we able to get any food and drink on the train. Tired and hungry we finally reached home at ten, opening the door to the sound of the telephone bell. It was Joan; she had seen the Crown Jewels, had managed to get another ticket for concert, and had had a wonderful dinner at a restaurant near the hotel where she decided to stay for the night. Now she was ringing to discover whether we had had an equally successful day.

1Why was Joan separated from her sister and her brother-in-law?

A.they could not see each other because of the fog.

B.Joan had not seen Crown Jewels.

C.They planned to do different things until lunch time.

D.The writer didn’t want to go to the concert.

2What did the writer plan to do in the afternoon?

A.Go to the concert.B.See the Crown Jewels.

C.Return to Cambridge.D.Go shopping.

3The reason why they didn’t all meet for lunch was that _______.

A.They lost their way in the fog

B.they forgot to make necessary arrangement

C.they waited at different places and didn’t meet each other

D.the couple couldn’t find the underground station

4It’s quite clear that for Joan the trip to London had been ________.

A.spilt by the fogB.quite tiring

【题目】阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

My family and I go to the Big Island of Hawaii in the United States every year. Each year, we do the same things-spend time at the beaches, surfing and fishing. On this trip, however, my family got tired of this holiday style and wanted to do something different. We learned from a local that there was a hot spring on the island called the Boiling Pots. Without doing any research, we decided to set off on an adventure to that spot.

We drove to the destination, but were surprised to find that the area was closed off by a fence (栅栏). Reading the sign placed in front of the gate, we found out it was, in fact, a forbidden area that lay at the bottom of the mountain. And we were on the mountaintop. Seemingly out of nowhere, a strange man came up to us. He told us he would go to the Boiling Pots and that he would show us the way down there if we would just jump over the fence and follow him. After some discussion, my family, 8 members, followed the man past the fence.

The 'path' was a slope (斜坡) covered in mud and high grass. Several times, our members fell but nobody gave up and turned back because it seemed an amazing adventure.

After about one hour's walk, we arrived at the bottom finally, but a large river stopped us. The strange man went to borrow a boat from his friend living nearby. We stood on the bank, waiting for him and joking that we could swim across the river.

Just then, I heard the voice of my father screaming at us to move. I looked up to the sky and saw a large tree falling towards us. I ran forward, pushing the people in front of me. I fell to the ground, hearing a loud sound of the tree hitting the ground, along with pieces of branches surrounding us.

【题目】 Mother’s Day is a time for children, young and old, to show how much they appreciate their mothers. Mother’s Day started in the US, where it’s celebrated on the second Sunday in May. 1

It became an official US holiday in 1915. It was the result of the love of one girl, Anna Jarvis of West Virginia.2 As a girl, Anna helped her mother take care of the garden and filled it with white carnations (康乃馨), her mother’s favorite flower.

When Mrs. Jarvis died on May 5, 1905, Anna was determined to honor her. 3 On the same Sunday in Philadelphia, a minister honored Mrs. Jarvis and all mothers with a special Mother’s Day service. Anna Jarvis began writing to the government, asking them to set aside a day to honor all mothers. In 1910, the governor of West Virginia made the second Sunday in May Mother’s Day.

4 Other children give their mothers gifts that they’ve made themselves or bought from stores. Adults give their mothers red carnations, the official Mother’s Day flower. White carnations are placed on the graves of mothers who are no longer alive.

Mother’s Day is now celebrated in more than 40 countries, including Denmark, Finland, Italy, and Australia. 5 In France, Mother’s Day is the last Sunday in May. A cake in the shape of flowers is presented to mothers at a family dinner.

A.So why is it celebrated on different dates?

【题目】A new study shows the world’s fastest land animal could be running towards extinction.

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), Panthera, and Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) led the study. It estimates that only 7,100 cheetahs(猎豹)remain worldwide, mainly found in Africa. But according to the study, cheetahs have been forced out of 91% of their native range. Cheetahs found in Asia are among the hardest hit. Fewer than 50 are left in a small part of Iran.

Many factors are to blame for the decline in cheetah numbers, including habitat loss and the illegal trade. Prey(猎物)loss is also a problem. Humans cause it by overhunting animals that cheetahs prey on. Cheetahs are carnivores and prey mainly on smaller mammals, for example gazelles.

Because cheetahs usually roam over large areas in search of food, 77% of their habitat remains outside of government-protected areas. This means cheetahs are in constant danger of hunters and traders. In Zimbabwe, Africa, alone, the cheetah population has dropped from 1,200 to only about 170 in 16 years. This decline represents a loss of 85% of the country’s cheetahs.

Dr. Kim Young—Overton, Panthera’s Cheetah Program Director, thinks protected habitats alone are not enough to save cheetahs. Cheetahs in reserves also face dangers such as loss of prey and illegal trade.

Dr. Sarah Durant, the study’s lead author, believes that the information it contains will lead to a better understanding of cheetahs as well as a better approach to helping them survive. Durant says local and national officials must team up in order to save cheetahs. But first, the International Union for Conservation of Nature must classify the animals as endangered. Currently, cheetahs are classified as weak on the IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species. The change would focus more attention on cheetahs and help protect them for extinction. After all, in the fight to save cheetahs, it's a race against time.

1What is the present situation of cheetahs according to the study?

A. They are in danger.

B. They live freely worldwide.

C. They are protected well in Africa.

D. They mainly live in their native range.

2What does the underlined word “carnivores” refer to?

A. Animals kept at home.

B. Animals living in zoos.

C. Animals feeding on meat.

D. Animals killed in the wild.

3What results in the decline of the cheetah population according to the text?

A. The loss of their reserves.

B. Their appearance in unpreserved areas.

C. The decreasing government protection.

D. Their increasing natural enemies.

4What does Dr. Sarah Durant think of the study of cheetahs?

A. It shows ways of wildlife protection.

B. It implies people’s role in saving animals.

C. It stresses the importance of cheetahs in our life.

D. It informs people of cheetahs’ existing state.
