                                April Fool's Day
April Fool's Day is a western festival. No one   1   exactly
when and how April Fool's Day began. However, there are some
stories about   2    it came into being. One story    3    like
this: in the sixteenth-century France, the start of the new year was
on April first. It was celebrated    4     much the same way
5    it is today with parties and dancing into the late hours of
the night. Then in 1562, Pope (教皇) Gregory introduced a new
calendar for the Christian world, and the new year fell on January
first. There were some people,    6    ,who hadn't heard or didn't
believe the   7    in the date, so they    8    to celebrate New
Year's Day on April first.    9   played tricks on them and called
them"April fools".  They tried to make them believe that
something false was    10  . In France today, April first is called
"April Fish". French children fool their friends by taping a paper
fish to their friends'    11  .When the "young fool"    12    this
trick, the prankster (恶作剧者) shouts"April Fish!"
Today Americans play small tricks on friends and strangers
alike on the first of April.  One  13  trick on April Fool's Day is
14    to a friend's shoe and saying, "Your shoelace is untied (你
的鞋带开了)."School children might tell a classmate that school
has been canceled (取消).    15    the trick is, if you fail for the
joke the prankster shouts "April Fool!"
In Britain today, on the first of April, even    51
newspapers, radio and TV programs tell big lies. You    52
read a science    53    showing that doctors have found a way to
cure (治疗)AIDS,  54  you would probably listen to a piece
of news about an UFO  55 on an island.

People celebrate birthdays in almost every country on earth. And they celebrate them in many
different ways.
In China and in Japan, for example, the arrival of New Year is more important than a person's
birthday. So everyone adds a year to celebrate their ages on New Year's Day, instead of on their
birthdays,
In Brazil, the special birthday food isn't cake, but special candles. In China, it's long noodles-for
long life. In Iceland, people have pancakes with candies rolled inside them on birthdays.
In Britain, a birthday is an all-day celebration. At school, the birthday child is lifted up and "bumped"
by his classmates. This means the child is lifted by the feet and arms and bumped to the ground, once for
each year once for good growth. In Israel, the same custom is followed, except the birthday person is
lifted and lowered while sitting in a chair.
In Holland, children not only get presents, but also give things out. They give cakes, cookies and
candles to their classmates and teachers on their birthdays.
In Mexico, it's good luck to give birthday greetings as early in the day as possible. So it's usual for the
birthday child to be woken up at midnight by fiends singing birthday songs.
In India, birthday celebrations also begin before dawn. Prayers and blessings must be said before morning comes.
In Thailand, two tall candles are lighted the night before the birthday. One is as tall as the birthday
person. If it goes out early, it's bad luck. Another customs of Thailand is that they buy live fish and birds
for the birthday person and then the birthday person frees the animals, and it brings good luck.
In Nigeria, people in a certain age group celebrate their birthdays together, on a certain day.
In many countries birthday customs are changing. Old customs are giving way to western style of
birthdays, with candletopped cakes. But one thing never changes-birthdays are special days for everyone!
1. It's a custom to lift and lower the birthday person in a chair in _____.
A. Britain
B. Israel
C. Britain and Israel
D. Israel and Thailand
2. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?
A. In Thailand people give fish and birds to the birthday person as presents.
B. In Holland people give presents to unbirthday persons on their birthdays.
C. In Nigeria people who were born in the same period may celebrate their birthdays on the same day.
D. In Thailand a candle will be lighted on the birthday night.
3. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Different countries have different birthdays.
B. Celebrating birthdays is exciting.

You may know your mother, but how well do you really know Mother's Day? Cards, flowers, sales, TV specials, and a day off for someone who really deserves it-those are what probably come to mind for many people when they think of Mother's Day. But there's more to the story.
The earliest Mother's Day celebrations were held during spring in ancient Greece. The celebrations honored Rhea, the Mother of the gods. During the 1600's, England celebrated a day called Mothering Sunday. On this day even servants were given the day off to spend with their families. A mothering cake was even served with the family meal.
In the US, Mother's Day began in 1872 when Julia Ward Howe, who wrote the words to the famous song The Battle Hymn of the Republic, suggested it as a day devoted to peace. But it didn't really become popular until 1907 when Anna Jarvis started a campaign to honor mothers. She believed that mothers could help people get over the pain they experienced during the Civil War. The US isn't alone in devoting a day to mothers. Many other countries including Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, Japan, and Belgium also honor their mothers in May. Other countries honor their mothers at different times of the year.
Learning more about Mother's Day and celebrating Mother's Day are important, but probably not as important as understanding what your own mother, or grandmother, or aunt has really done for you. And that will certainly be appreciated more than one day in a year.
1. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The reason why people celebrate Mother's Day.
B. The ways people honor mothers.
C. The history of Mother's Day.
D. The great contribution of mothers.
2. Where was the earliest Mother's Day celebrated?
A. In ancient Greece.
B. In the US.
C. In England.
D. In Italy.
3. We can learn from the passage that _____.
A. Rhea is the mother of a king in ancient Greece
B. not all the countries celebrate Mother's Day in May
C. only mothers were given a day off on Mothering Sunday
D. it was in 1872 that Mother's Day really came into being
4. The last paragraph tells us that _____.
A. all the people should celebrate Mother's Day
B. only mothers are honored on Mother's Day
C. understanding mothers' work is more important than just celebrating Mother's Day
D. people should celebrate Mother's Day every day

Tea drinking was common in China for nearly one thousand years before anyone in Europe had ever
heard about tea . People in Britain were much slower in finding out what tea was like , mainly because
tea was very expensive . It could not be bought in shops and even those people who could afford to have
it sent from Holland did so only because it was a fashionable curiosity . Some of them were not sure how
to use it . They thought it was a vegetable and tried cooking the leaves . Then they served them mixed

England and today only very few Britons drink tea without milk .

I have a rule for travel: never carry a map. I prefer to ask for directions (方向).
Foreign visitors are often puzzled in Japan because most streets there don't have names. In Japan, people
use landmarks in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers,
"Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across
from the bus stop."
In the countryside of the American Midwest, usually there are not many landmarks. There are no mountains,
so the land is very flat (平坦的). In many places there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of
landmarks, people will tell you directions and distance. In Kansas or Iowa, for example, people will say, "Go
north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile."
People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map: they measure (测量) distance by
means of time, not miles. "How far away is the post office?" you ask. "Oh," they answer, "It's about five
minutes from here." You say, "Yes, but how many miles away is it?" They don't know.
People in Greece sometimes do not even try to give directions because visitors seldom (很少) understand
the Greek language. Instead of giving you the direction, a Greek will often say, "Follow me." Then he will lead
you through the streets of the city to the post office.
Sometimes a person doesn't know the answer to your question. What happens in this situation? A New
Yorker might say, "sorry, I have no idea." But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers, "I don't know." People in
Yucatan think that "I don't know" is impolite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A visitor can
get very, very lost in Yucatan!
One thing will help you everywhere ---- in Japan, in the United States, in Greece, in Mexico, or in any other
place. You might not understand a person's words, but maybe you can understand his body language. He or
she will usually turn and then point in the correct direction. Go in that direction and you may find the post
office!
1. The passage mainly tells that _____.
[     ]
A. never carry a map for travel
B. there are not many landmarks in the American Midwest
C. there are different ways to give directions in different parts of the world
D. New Yorkers often say, "I have no idea," but people in Yucatan, Mexico, never say this

[     ]
A. building names
B. street names
C. hotels, marks and bus stops
D. buildings or places which are easily recognized
3. In which place do people tell distance by means of time?
[     ]
A. Japan
B. American Midwest
C. Los Angles, California
D. Greece
4. In the passage, _____ countries are mentioned (提到) by the writer.
[     ]
A. seven
B. four
C. eight
D. five
5. Which of the following is wrong?
[     ]
A. Travelers can learn about people's customs by asking questions about directions.
B. A person's body language can help you understand directions.
C. People in some places give directions in miles, but people in other places give directions by means of time.
D. People in different places always give directions in the same way.

Today we talk about proverbs. A proverb is a short, well- known saying that expresses a common truth
or belief. Proverbs are found in most cultures and are often very old.
In American history, Benjamin Franklin was famous for his proverbs. He lived in the 1700s and was a
leader of the American Revolution against English rule. He was also a scientist, inventor and writer.
Franklin published a book called Poor Richard's Almanac. He included many proverbs he had heard or
created. Some of them are still used today, like:" Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy
and wise."
Here are other examples of proverbs that Americans use. The first ones are about love. Some people say,
" All is fair in love and war." They mean that anything you do in a relationship or in battle is acceptable.
Another proverb about love is," Absence makes the heart grow fonder." This means you love someone
even more when he or she is far away. But other people say,"out of sight, out of mind."You may not even
think about that person when he or she is not with you. Which of these proverbs do you think is most true?
Another proverb says " Love is blind." In other words, when you are in love with someone, you may
refuse to see anything bad about that person.
Some people are only interested in having a relationship with someone who is very good-looking. You
might tell them that "Beauty is only skin deep." Your girlfriend may be lovely to look at, but she may also have
some bad qualities. Or your boyfriend is a wonderful person, but not good-looking. So what a person looks
like is not really important.
Sadly, we have no more time for this program. So we must say,"All good things must come to an end."
Thanks for listening.
