How often one hears children wishing they were grown-ups, and old people wishing they were young again. Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age give him without wasting his time in useless regrets.

Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities(责任)to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do.It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. What's more, life is always giving new things to the child-things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well-known.But a child has his pains:he is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is repeatedly being told not to do something, or being punished for what he has wrongly done.

When a young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society.

It's so simple and convenient that it couldn't possibly count (算作) as exercise, right? Wrong. Studies shows that regular walking can help you lose weight and reduce risk of heart disease.

If you don't believe us, then trust the research. In a study published in Diabetes Research in Clinical Practice, Japanese researchers tested fat men before and after they joined a one-year walking plan. All they did was up the number of steps they took during their daily activities, such as walking from the car to the grocery store(杂货店). The result is: their blood pressure and cholesterol (胆固醇)levels improved and the amount of body fat around their abdomen(腹部) -- the dangerous kind of fat that leads to higher rates of heart disease and diabetes -- decreased.

That's good news, because walking has now become the most popular fitness activity in the United States. Convenient, simple, and gentle on the joints(关节), walking is perhaps the easiest form of exercise to take. According to studies, four out of five women who start a walking program continue to walk, while half of women who attempt other types of exercise, such as swimming, drop out during the first few months. In addition, research has shown that walking regularly is better than running for your health and for losing weight.

1. From the first paragraph, we can know that in most people’s opinion, walking__________.

  A. can help lose weight.

  B. can reduce the risk of heart disease.

  C. is not a form of exercise.

  D. is a simple exercise.

2. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

  A. Many Japanese men and women took part in the one-year walking plan.

  B. Those who joined the one-year walking plan should do different kinds of exercise.

  C. Walking has been the most popular fitness activity in America for a long time.

  D. According to the research, most women prefer walking to other forms of exercise.

3. What’s the best title for the passage?

  A. What kind of walk do you need?

  B. Walk to a healthier you.

  C. How often should you have a walk?

  D. Walking is better than swimming.

4. Which section of a newspaper is this passage probably taken from?

  A. Science. B. Sports. C. Health. D. Technology.
