It is reported that conservation groups(自然环境保护小组)in North America have been arguing about the benefits and dangers of wolves. Some groups believe wolves should be killed.Other people believe wolves must be protected so that they will not disappear from the wilderness(荒野)

For Killing Wolves

In Alaska, the wolf almost disappeared a few years ago, because hunters were killing hundreds of them for sport. However, laws were established to protect the wolves from sportsmen and people who catch the animals for their fur.So the wolf population has greatly increased. Now there are so many wolves that they are destroying their own food supply.

A wolf naturally eats animals in the deer family.People in the wilderness also hunt deer for food. Many of the animals have been destroyed by the very cold winters recently and by changes in the wilderness plant life. When the deer can’t find enough food, they die.

If the wolves continue to kill large numbers of deer, their prey(猎物)will disappear some day.And the wolves will.too.So we must change the cycle of life in the wilderness to balance the ecology(生态学).If we killed more wolves,we would save them and their prey from dying out. We’d also save some farm animals.

In another northern state, wolves attack cows and chickens for food.Farmers want the government to send biologists(生物学家) to study the problem. They believe it necessary to kill wolves in some areas and to protect them in places where there is a small wolf population.

Against Killing Wolves

If you had lived long ago,you would have heard many different stories about the dangerous wolf.According to most stories, hungry wolves often kill people for food.Even today, the stories of the “big bad wolf'"will not disappear.

But the fact is that wolves are afraid of people.and they seldom travel in areas where there is a human smell. When wolves eat other animals, they usually kill the very young or the sick and injured. The strongest survive. No kind of animal would have survived through the centuries if the weak members had not lived. And has always been a law of nature.

Although some people say it is good sense to kill wolves,we say it is nonsense! Researchers have found wolves and their prey living in balance. The wolves keep the deer population from becoming too large, and that keeps a balance in the wilderness plant life.

The real problem is that the areas where wolves can live are being used by people.Even if wilderness land is not used directly for human needs, the wolves can’t always find enough food.So they travel to the nearest source, which is often a farm. Then there is danger. The “big bad wolf” has arrived! And everyone knows what happens next.

1.According to the passage, some people in North America favor killing wolves for all the following reasons EXCET that

A.they never eat strong and healthy ones

B.they always go against the law of nature

C.they might help this kind of animals survive in nature

D.they disturb the ecological balance in the wilderness

4.The last sentence “And everyone knows what happens next” implies that in such cases

A.farm animals will be in danger and have to be shipped away

B.wolves will kill people and people will in turn kill them

C.wolves will find enough food sources on farms

D.people will leave the areas where wolves can live

Ammie Reddick from East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, was only 18 months old when she had the accident that had scarred(留下创伤) her for life. The curious child reached up to grab the wire of a hot kettle in the family kitchen and poured boiling water over her tiny infant frame(身躯).

Her mother Ruby turned round and, seeing Ammie horribly burnt, called an ambulance which rushed her daughter to a nearby hospital. Twenty percent of Ammie’s body had been burned and all of her burns were third-degree. There, using tissue(组织) taken from unburned areas of Ammie’s body, doctors performed complex skin transplants(移植) to close her wounds and control her injuries, an operation that took about six hours. Over the next 16 years, Ammie underwent 12 more operations to repair her body.

When she started school at Maxwelton Primary at age 4, other pupils made cruel comments or simply wouldn’t play with her. “I was the only burned child in the street, the class and the school,” she recalled, “some children refused to become friends because of that.”

Today, aged 17, Ammie can only ever remember being a burned person with scars; pain is a permanent part of her body. She still has to have two further skin transplants. Yet she is a confident, outgoing teenager who offers inspiration and hope to other young burns victims.

She is a member of the Scottish Burned Children’s Club, a charity set up last year. This month, Ammie will be joining the younger children at the Graffham Water Center in Cambridge shire for the charity’s first summer camp. “I’ll show them how to get rid of unkind stares from others,” she says. Have you ever been afraid to talk back when you were treated unfairly? Have you ever bought something just because the salesman talked you into it?

Many people are afraid to assert (维护,坚持) themselves.Dr.Robert Albert, author of STAND UP, SPEAK OUT and TALK BACK, thinks it is because their self-respect is low.“There’s always a superior (长者)around—a parent, a teacher, a boss who knows better.’’ But Albert and other scientists are doing something to help people assert themselves.

They offer assertiveness training courses, A.T.for short. In the A.T.course people learn that they have a right to be themselves. They learn to speak out and feel good about doing so.They learn to be confident without hurting other people.

In one way, learning to speak out is to get rid of fear.A group taking an A.T.course will help the timid person to lose his fear. But A.T.uses an even stronger motive to share the need. The timid person speaks out in the group because he wants to tell how he feels.

Whether or not you speak up for yourself depends on your self-respect.If your face is more important than you, you may feel less of a person. You start to doubt your answers to problems. However, once you get to feel good about yourself, you can learn to speak out.

1.The problem the writer talks about is that___________.

A.some people are forced to buy things they don’t like

B.some people are afraid to speak up for their rights

C.many superiors are everywhere

D.some people love to help others find confidence in themselves

2.Why don’t many people feel good about themselves?

A.Because some people have a low self-respect.

B.Because talented people can be found all the time.

C.Because the advice from salesmen is always persuasive.

D.Because people don’t like to exchange ideas with others.

3.What does the underlined word “timid’’ probably means?

A.胆小的 B.有学问的

C.有社交能力的 D.好斗的

4.Which of the following is NOT the thing the A.T.course does?

A.Encourage people to speak out .

B.Showing people they have a right to be themselves.

C.Helping them to be brave enough.

D.Helping people to assert themselves even if others are hurt.

Ask most people anywhere in the world what they want out of life and the reply will probably be: “to be happy.” Ed Deiner, an American psychology professor, has spent his whole professional life studying what makes people happy, comparing levels of happiness between cultures and trying to find out exactly why we enjoy ourselves.

Many people would say that this question does not need an answer. But Professor Deiner has one anyway. “If you’re a cheerful, happy person, your marriage is more likely to last, and you’re more likely to make money and be successful at your job. On average, happy people have stronger immune systems, and there is some evidence that they live longer.”

So who are the world's happiest people? It depends on how the word is defined. There is individual happiness, the sense of joy we get when we do something we like. But there is also the feeling of satisfaction we get when we know that others respect us and approve of how we behave. According to Professor Deiner, the Western world pursues individual happiness while Asia prefers mutual (相互的,彼此) satisfaction.

“In the West, the individualistic culture means that your mood matters much more than it does in the East. People ask themselves if they are doing what is fun or interesting. They become unhappy when they can’t do any of these things. If you ask people from Japan or China if they are happy, they tend to look at what has gone wrong in their lives. If not much has gone wrong, then they are satisfied.”

People from Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries had the happiest culture, Professor Deiner found. “The biggest cultural difference is to do with pride and shame. Hispanic (西班牙语言的) cultures report much more pride and much less shame than others.”

Income also made a big difference to people’s happiness, but only at the lowest levels. Average income earners in the US were much happier than people in poverty. But millionaires were only a little bit happier than people on average incomes. It seems that money makes us happy when we have enough to feel secure.

1.According to the passage, happy people enjoy the following benefits except ______.

A. a long marriage B. profession success

C. better health D. respect from others

2.What can be inferred from the fifth paragraph?

A. Hispanic cultures lay stress on pride and shame.

B. Spanish people take too much pride in themselves.

C. Attitude towards pride and shame results in Spanish happiness.

D. If you are from Spain, you are the happiest.

3. In the last paragraph, the author seems to tell us ______.

A. Poor people enjoy the same happiness as millionaires

B. the higher income one gets, the happier life he lives

C. Enough money can make us feel safe and happy

D. Average income earners live the happiest life

4.The passage mainly discusses ______.

A. cultural differences in happiness

B. reasons for happiness

C. the happiest culture

D. benefits of happiness
