    4．During the last four days my family was celebrating a marriage．A cousin of mine came all the way from Florida to Brazil with his bride because they wanted to marry here．Today，the fourth day of partying，everybody went to a country house，which is where the newly-wed couple is staying．
    Just as night fell，I was wandering around a swimming pool when I saw a group of my youngest cousins （three boys aged 6，9，and 14，and a girl who was 12，I'm 22），and they were talking about school．Specifically，they were cursing Math．I was curious and asked them what subjects they liked．Physics was a top of the list，which is an oxymoron（矛盾），for when people like Physics and dislike Math，there is clearly something amiss（不正常）．
    One thing I have to say about our schools is that most of them don't care much about what students feel when they're being"educated"．As long as everybody's getting good grades and the older boys and girls are getting past colleges'admission exams，everything is fine．My point is that being force-fed knowledge in annoying and painful ways causes people to forget all about the subject right after the tests，and even worse，they generate hatred and grief towards precious knowledge．It was quite obvious，the reason why the kids didn't like Math； instead of being stimulated towards learning it with a passion，they had to behave as little turning machines which would read a formula on one piece of text，and give an output right below the question，with no understanding of the logic involved．In a cruel Pavlovian（巴甫洛夫学说的） system，they were punished （read：failed exams   for inaccurate outputs，and rewarded for correct answers．

    The Maryland teenager asked to work in a laboratory at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and was allowed．There he developed a simple paper test，which can recognize the disease in a single drop of blood．His test has proved correct 90% of the time．It also is 100times more sensitive（敏感的）than other tests．"It costs 3cents per test，and then it takes only 5minutes to run，"he said．
    Jack's success wouldn't have been possible without Anirban Maitra，a professor at Johns Hopkins．He was the only person among the 200researchers Jack wrote to who showed interest in his project．"I was very surprised that this was a 15-year-old who was writing this．I wanted to meet this clever young man and see what he wanted to talk about and so I called him over for an interview（会面）．"
    Jack worked in Professor Maitra's laboratory，completing his project in 7months．The government has given the Maryland teenager patent rights（专利权）to the pancreatic cancer test．He is now talking with companies about developing the test into a simple product．
