Read and answer the following questions.
The United States is one of the biggest countries in the world. It has all sorts of geography, from deserts
to beaches, mountains to flatlands. These conditions help create all sorts of weather: mild, moderate and
extreme. Sometimes all in one day! In the summer, some areas get very hot and the air is very wet. But others
have dry air, so the heat does not feel so bad.
In the winter, parts of the country get cold and snowy while others stay warm and sunny. This is the
difference between, for example, New York City on the East Coast and Los Angeles on the West Coast. Yet
even the East Coast has its warm places in winter, like Florida.
The oceans affect weather along the coasts. The Pacific coast has smaller temperature changes and calmer
conditions than along the Atlantic.
Alaska and Hawaii are the only states not connected to the forty-eight mainland states. Alaska is in the
Arctic area, so it gets very cold. Hawaii, out in the Pacific, is warm all year long.
Weather in the central and northeastern parts of the country is affected by cold air from Canada and warm
air from the Caribbean. Conditions can change quickly.
Hurricanes are ocean storms that strike mainly in the Southeast. The hurricane season is, officially, June
through November. Tornadoes are a risk across the country. These are locally severe windstorms. They
generally happen in spring and summer.
In fact, March eighteenth happens to be the eightieth anniversary of the most deadly tornado in United
States history. The nineteen twenty-five"Tri-State Tornado" hit parts of Missouri, Illinois and Indiana. The
National Weather Service says the horrible twister killed nearly seven hundred people.

Jaime Alfonso Escalante was considered one of the best teachers in the United States. He was born
in 1930 in La Paz, Bolivia. He taught math and science in his home country for twelve years.
In the 1960s, Jaime Escalante and his wife Fabiola came to the United States. During the next several
years, he learned to speak English and repeated his college education and teacher training.
In 1974, Mr. Escalante was hired at Garfield High School to teach mathematics. The school was in a
poor area of Los Angeles, California. Many of the students in the school had serious problems with illegal drugs, gangs and violence. The school was in danger of losing its official approval to operate.
Mr. Escalante's students were mostly MexicanAmericans from a Spanishspeaking area of the city.
Many were the worst students at the school and thought to be "unteachable". But Mr. Escalante pushed
the group to work hard. He told them basic math was too easy and that they had the ability to do harder
    work.
Jaime Escalante started an advanced math program with a small group of students. Advanced Placement is a program of collegelevel classes and tests. In 1982, eighteen of his students took the Advanced Placement test in calculus(微积分学). They all passed.
The officials at the testing company suspected the students of cheating. Mr. Escalante protested(抗议). He said the students were being rejected because they were from a poor school. He urged his students to
    take the test again.
Twelve of the students repeated the test. And again, They all passed. Five earned top scores. Mr.
Escalante's students went on to become engineers, scientists and university professors.
Jaime Escalante received many teaching awards. A movie about his success, Stand and Deliver, was
released in 1988. It influenced other teachers to use his methods.
Jaime Escalante retired from teaching in 1998 and later moved back to Bolivia with his wife. He died
when he was seventynine years old.

While contact between adolescents (between the ages of fifteen and nineteen) and their peers (同龄人) is a universal characteristic of all cultures, the nature and the degree of such contact vary a great deal. In
American contemporary society, adolescents spend much more time with their peers than with younger
    children or adults.
This pattern of age segregation(隔离) in American society did not become usual until the beginning of the industrialized society. Changes in the workplace separated children from adults, with adults working and children attending school. The dramatic increase of mothers in the workplace has further contributed
to the reduction in the amount of time adolescents spend with adults. School reform efforts during the
nineteenth century, which resulted in age-segregated schools and grades, have reduced the amount of time adolescents spend with younger children. Finally, the changes in population are considered a factor that
may have contributed to the emergence of adolescent peer culture. From 1955 t0 1975, the adolescent
population increased dramatically, from 11 percent t0 20.9 percent. This increase in the number of
adolescents might be a contributing factor to the increase in adolescent peer culture in terms of growth in
    size.
Research supports the view that adolescents spend a great deal of time with their peers. Reed Larson
and his colleagues examined adolescents' daily activities and found that they spend more time talking to
their friends than engaging in any other activity. In a typical week, high school students will spend twice
as much time with their peers as with adults. This gradual withdrawal from adults begins in early
adolescence. In sixth grade, adults (excluding parents) account for only 25 percent of adolescent social
networks. Another important characteristic of  adolescent peer culture is its increasingly autonomous (白
治的) function. While childhood peer groups are conducted under the close supervision of parents,
adolescent peer groups typically make an effort to escape adult supervision and usually succeed in
    doing so.

    1. "This pattern of age segregation" refers to the phenomenon that adolescents segregate themselves
          from
    2. Besides changes in the workplace,                  are the other two factors contributing to adolescent

    3. When do adolescents start to spend less time with adults?

                                                                        Life in 2060
Let us suppose it is now about A.D. 2060. Let's make believe it is about fifty years from now. Of
course, things have changed and life is very different.
Voyages to the moon are being made every day. It is as easy to take a holiday on the moon today as
it was for the people in 1960 to take a holiday in Europe. At a number of scenic spots on the moon, many hotels have been built. The hotels are air conditioned, naturally. In order that everyone can enjoy the
beautiful scenery on the moon, every room has at least one picture window. Everything imaginable is
provided for entertainment of young and old.
What are people eating now? People are still eating food. They haven't yet started to take on heir
(继承) supply of energy directly as electrical current or as nuclear power. They may some day. But many
foods now come in pill form, and the food that goes into the pill continues to come mainly from green
    plants.
Since there are several times as many people in the world today as there were a hundred years ago,
most of our planet's surface has to be filled. The deserts are irrigated with water and crops are no longer
destroyed by pests. The harvest is always good.
Farming, of course, is very highly developed. Very few people have to work on the farm. It is possible
to run the farm by just pushing a few buttons now and then.
People are now largely vegetarians (素食者). You see, as the number of people increases, the
number of animals decreases. Therefore, people have to be vegetarians and we are healthier both in our
bodies and in our minds, and we know the causes and cure of disease and pain, and it is possible to get
rid of diseases. No one has to be ill any more.
Such would be our life in 2060.
    1. When was the passage written? ( no more than 5 words)

    2. According to the passage, what does each room of the hotels have on the moon? (no more than 8
    words)

    3. What will people eat then according to the passage? (no more than 5 words)

    4. Why are people largely vegetarians in 2060? (no more than 7 words)

Directions:Read the following passage.Answer the questions according to the information
    given in the passage.
Smoking in indoor public places including public working place, public transportation vehicles and
some other special outdoor working spaces has been banned in China since January 2011. Should
smoking be banned in public places? Of course, it should be. First, banning smoking in public places
will not only help in saving smokers from various kinds of heath conditions and diseases, but will also
    be beneficial for passive smokers.
Second, banning smoking in public places will put pressure on smokers to quit. Since a smoker is
forbidden from smoking in public places, he will learn how to live without smoking a cigarette for long
hours. Moreover, when a smoker doesn't see anybody around him smoking or smelling of cigarette, it
might reduce his urge to smoke too. Thus, people have to quit smoking as a result of smoking ban.
Smoking in public places influences nonsmokers to take up smoking, especially adolescents. Since
teens are in an impressionable age, when they see people around them smoking, they get encouraged to
try it and then it becomes a habit, increasing the incidence of teen smoking. Moreover, asthma(哮喘)
and ear infections are commonly seen in children who live around smokers, so if it's banned in public
places, these places will become safe for children and teens, healthwise.
Looking from the economic point of view, since smoking is a major contributing factor to many
diseases, it leads to absence from work. Moreover, employees who smoke tend to take breaks now
and then to smoke, thus cutting back on their working hours. So, if employers want to increase work
productivity and want to make sure that their employees remain healthy, they should ban and stop
    smoking in and around offices.
At last, smoking cigarettes adds to the pollution of the air, so if it is banned, it will help in saving the
    environment from further deterioration(恶化).
1.According to the passage, in what situation do smokers reduce their urge to smoke? (No more than 11 words)
    ________________________________________________________________________
    2. Seen from the environmental point of view, why shouldn't people smoke in public places? (No more than 7 words)
    ________________________________________________________________________
    3. How does smoking in and around offices affect work productivity? (No more than 13 words)
    ________________________________________________________________________
    4. What is the main idea of the passage?(No more than 8 words)
