Primary teachers are responsible for guiding children through the formation of many important life skills,
and also watching over their students' social development. Primary teachers come into contact with about
30 students every day, and teach them a variety of subjects. Many hours are spent before and after class on
planning, preparation and correction. One should be a very patient, caring, yet firm person to be able to deal
with the demands of children in the four to twelve-year-old age group. Secondary teachers teach specific
subjects to various groups of students.
Just like primary teachers, they spend an amount of time planning and preparing lessons and correcting
homework-their duties are not restricted to face-to-face teaching. Dealing with twelve to eighteen-year-olds
requires a wide range of skills. If you become a primary teacher, you will need to decide whether to be a
"generalist" (多面手), teaching a wide range of subjects, or a "specialist", teaching only one or two. Most
primary teachers are specialists. Generalist teachers spend the greatest part of their day with one class, which
means that they spend more time with the same children. Specialist teachers have more time away from their
students. It is therefore very important for generalist teachers to develop a strong working relationship with
their students. The unique rapport (和谐) you can develop with a particular set of students is one of teaching's
greatest pleasures. However, the disadvantage of primary teaching is that if you have a difficult student, you
will be forced to deal with him or her, all day, every day, throughout the school year. Teachers need to work
out strategies to get themselves and their students through such difficulties.
Primary teachers today are generally four-year trained. They usually do a three or four-year undergraduate
degree, and if this degree does not include teacher training, they will have to undertake postgraduate study in
education as well.
1. After class primary teachers usually _____.
A. come into contact with students
B. teach students a variety of subjects
C. deal with the demands of children
D. make planning, preparation and correction
2. What does the second paragraph mainly discuss?
A. What a primary teacher needs to do in the classroom.
B. The differences between generalist and specialist teaching.
C. How a primary teacher should try his best in the school.
D. The relationship between the primary teachers and students.
3. We can learn from this passage that _____.
A. a primary teacher needs a wide range of skills
B. the disadvantage of primary teaching is having difficult students
C. teacher training is not important for a primary teacher
D. secondary teachers mainly teach children two subjects
4. The author writes the article in order to _____.
A. tell teachers how primary teachers guide students
B. tell teachers what you should do as a primary teacher
C. let readers know more about primary teachers
D. let readers know how to be a primary teacher

Do you want to live another 100 years or more? Some experts say that scientific advances will one day
enable humans to last tens of years beyond what is now seen as the natural limit of the human life span.
"I think we are knocking at the door of immortality (永生)," said Michael Zey, a Montclair State University
business professor and author of two books on the future. "I think by 2075 we will see it and that's a
conservative estimate (保守的估计)."
At the conference in San Francisco, Donald Louria, a professor at New Jersey Medical School in Newark
said advances in using genes as well as nanotechnology (纳米技术) make it likely that humans will live in the
future beyond what has been possible in the past. "There is a great push so that people can live from I20 to
180 years," he said. "Some have suggested that there is no limit and that people could live to 200 or 300 or
500 years."
However, many scientists who specialize in ageing are doubtful about it and say the human body is just not
designed to last past about 120 years. Even with healthier lifestyles and less disease, they say failure of the
brain and organs will finally lead all humans to death.
Scientists also differ on what kind of life the super aged might live."It remains to be seen if you pass 120,
you know; could you be healthy enough to have good quality of life?" said Leonard Poon, director of the
University of Georgia Gerontology Centre. "At present people who could get to that point are not in good health
at all."
1. By saying "we are knocking at the door of immortality", Michael Zey means _____.
A. they believe that there is no limit of living
B. they are sure to find the truth about long living
C. they have got some ideas about living forever
D. they are able to make people live past the present life span
2. Donald Louria's attitude towards long living is that _____.
A. people can live from 120 to 180
B. it is still doubtful how long humans can live
C. the human body is designed to last past about 120 years
D. it is possible for humans to live longer in the future
3. The underlined "it" ( paragraph 4 ) refers to _____.
A. a great push
B. the idea of living beyond the present life span
C. the idea of living from 200 to 300 years
D. the conservative estimate
4. What would be the best title for this text?
A. Living Longer or Not
B. Science, Technology and Long Living
C. No Limit for Human Life
D. Healthy Lifestyle and Long Living

Almost every child is scared of something, from monsters in the cupboard to dogs in the park. But the
fact that such fears are common and normal doesn't mean they can be taken lightly. Kids experience fears
and phobias (恐惧症) much more strongly than adults. And the influence of the fear can be physical as well
as psychological (心理的). It can build up so they almost seem scared of everything-a kind of childhood
anxiety. Dr. Creswell says: "Your child may always seem to expect the worst to happen and lack confidence
in his or her ability to deal with any challenge." So don't make the same old mistake of treating them as if
they're silly for being a "scaredy cat". Handling the fears is essential.
Children can be born nervous and, if you have such a baby, you'll tend to prevent them from getting
worried. So if they fear dogs, you'll keep them away from dogs, but in fact that can just confirm to the child
that dogs are scary. What is worse, keeping your child away from what they fear can turn that feeling into
a phobia. Instead, you should encourage them to get in touch with the thing they fear, in a safe and supportive
environment. Dr. Andy Field, a researcher of childhood fears, says: "You shouldn't force, for example, a dog
anxious child to go up to a dog. But you can approach it yourself, show them there is nothing to be afraid of,
stroke (抚摸) it, and talk about the dog being friendly. Once your child dares to stroke a dog-one that's good
with children, of course-then you should encourage them to carry on until they feel calmer, and reward them
for 'being brave'."
1. Children's fears are usually taken lightly because ______.
A. they will not develop into phobias
B. their influence is psychological
C. they exist widely in the world
D. they will disappear gradually
2. If we fail to help children to overcome fears, they will ______.
A. make the same old mistake
B. overcome them by themselves
C. experience the worst of things
D. grow up lacking self confidence
3. According to Dr. Andy Field, if a child is afraid of a cat, parents should ______.
A. tell the child not to be afraid of it
B. show the child how to approach it
C. keep the child away from it
D. ask the child to stroke it

In some parts of the United States, farming is easy. But farming has always been difficult in the
northeastern corner of the country, which is called New England.
New England has many trees and thin, rocky soil. Anyone who has wanted to start a new farm there
has had to work very hard. The first job has been cutting down trees. The next job has been digging
the stumps of the trees out of the soil. Then the farmer has had the difficult job of removing stones from
his land.
This work of removing stones never really ends, because every winter more stones appear. They come
up through the thin soil from the rocks below. Farmers have to keep removing stones from the fields. Even
today, farms which have been worked on for 200 years keep producing more stones.
That is why stone walls are used instead of fences around New England fields. The stone walls are not
high; a man can easily climb over them. But they keep the farmer's cows from joining his neighbor's cows.
1. This selection explains _____.
A. how to make a stone wall in New England
B. why there are many stone walls in New England
C. which parts of New England first used stone walls
D. how many fences there are in England
2. According to this selection farming is difficult in New England because _____.

A. the winter is very long there
B. the farms are very old
C. the soil is rocky and thin
D. the summer is too hot

3. This selection says that the work of removing stones _____.
A. must be done again and again
B. is usually done during the winter
C. was more difficult before machines were used
D. is easy after machines were used
4. In New England, stone walls are used _____.
A. to protect the farmer's fields from thieves
B. to keep the farmer's cattle from wandering away
C. to provide privacy for the farmer's family
D. to prevent the wind from blowing away the earth

The need to feed a growing population is putting much pressure on the world's supply of water. With
97% of the world's water too salty to be drunk or used in agriculture, the worldwide supply of water needs
careful management, especially in agriculture.
Although the idea of a water shortage seems strange to someone fortunate enough to live in a high rainfall
country, many of the world's agricultural industries experience constant water shortages. Although dams
can be built to store water for agricultural use in dry areas and dry seasons, the costs of water redistribution
(重新分配) are very high. Not only is there the cost of the engineering itself, but there is also an environmental
cost to be considered. Where valleys are flooded to create dams, houses are lost and wildlife homes destroyed.
Besides, water may flow easily through pipes to fields, but it cannot be transported from one side of the world
to the other. Each country must therefore rely on the management of its own water to supply its farming
requirements.
This is particularly troubling for countries with agricultural industries in areas dependent on irrigation. In
Texas, farmers' overuse of irrigation water has resulted in a 25% reduction of the water stores. In the Central
Valley area of southwestern USA, a huge water engineering project provided water for farming in dry valleys,
but much of the water use has been poorly managed.
Saudi Arabia's attempts to grow wheat in desert areas have seen the pumping of huge quantities of
irrigation water from underground reserves. Because there is no rainfall in these areas, such reserves can only
decrease, and it is believed that fifty years of pumping will see them run dry.
1. From the first two paragraphs we learn that _______.
A. much of the world's water is available for use
B. people in high rainfall countries feel lucky
C. water can be easily carried through pipes across the world
D. the costs of water redistribution should be considered .
2. Which of the following is true?
A. The underground water in Saudi Arabia might run out in 50 years.
B. Most industries in the world suffer from water shortages.
C. The water stores in Texas have been reduced by 75%.
D. Good management of water use resulted from the project in the Central Valley.
3. The text is mainly about _______.
A. water supply and increasing population
B. water redistribution and wildlife protection
C. water use management and agriculture
D. water shortages and environmental protection
4. What is most likely to be discussed in the paragraph that follows?
A. Approaches to handling the pressure on water supply.
B. Ways to reduce the costs of building dams.
C. Measures to deal with worldwide water shortages.
D. Steps to improving water use management

Science can't explain the power of pets, but many studies have shown that the company of pets can help
lower blood pressure (血压) and raise chances of recovering from a heart attack, reduce loneliness and spread
all-round good cheer.
Any owner will tell you how much joy a pet brings. For some, an animal provides more comfort than a
husband/wife. A 2002 study by Karen Allen of the State University of New York measured stress (紧张)
levels and blood pressure in people - half of them pet owners-while they performed 5 minutes of mental
arithmetic (算术) or held a hand in ice water. Subjects completed the tasks alone, with a husband/wife, a
close friend or with a pet. People with pets did it best. Those tested with their animal friends had smaller
change in blood pressure and returned most quickly to-baseline heart rates. With pets in the room, people
also made fewer math mistakes than when doing in front of other companions. It seems people feel more
relaxed (放松) around pets, says Allen, who thinks it may be because pets don't judge.
A study reported last fall suggests that having a pet dog not only raises your spirits but may also have
an effect on your eating habits. Researchers a Northwestern Memorial Hospital spent a year studying 36
fat people and their equally fat dogs on diet-and-exercise programs a separate group of 56 people without
pets were put on a diet program. On average, people lost about 11 pounds, or 5% of their body weight.
Their dogs did even better, losing an average or 12 pounds, more than 15% of their body weight. Dog
owners didn't lose any more weight than those without dogs but, say researchers, got more exercise
overall - mostly with their dogs-and found it worth doing.

1. What does the text mainly discuss?
A. What pets bring to their owners.
B. How pets help people calm down.
C. People's opinions of keeping pets.
D. Pet's value in medical research.
2. We learn from the text that a person with heart disease has a better chance of getting well if _____.
A. he has a pet companion
B. he has less stress of work
C. he often does mental arithmetic
D. he is taken care of by his family
3. According to Allen, why did the people do better with pets around when facing stressful tasks?
A. They have lower blood pressure.
B. They become more patient.
C. They are less nervous.
D. They are in higher spirits.
4. The research mentioned in the last paragraph reports that _____.

A. people with dogs did more exercise
B. dog lost the same weight as people did
C. dogs liked exercise much more than people did
D. people without dogs found the program unhelpful

Is early childhood education really necessary? Early childhood education primarily focuses on learning
through playing to develop the child's physical, sensory (感觉的), communicational and social development.
Early childhood education has become a concern of the government, who pushes poor children to be formally
trained before they are old enough for the kindergarten.
There are good reasons for the government to push early childhood education. Studies have shown that
orphan children who did not receive good care and education become developmentally delayed causing failure
in school, and even in life. Further studies show that poor children who take part in Head Start programs are
more prepared for school, less likely to end up in Special Education classes, and are less likely to receive public
help or go to jail.
There are also negative parts of putting a child in formal education programs too early. Time Magazine online
explains that the younger the child, the less his chances of catching up with first-grade work. I have personally
witnessed many children of my generation who went to Head Start programs became frustrated and bored with
school before they finished high school. Yet parents have been sure that the earlier the child starts school, the
better off he or she is, so they push to start childhood education earlier.
Actually while early formal education of poor children does show great gains in the early elementary years,
studies also show that this head start is really a"false start", as the gains are lost in middle and high school years.
It seems that environment is a bigger factor on life's success than early education. Head Start programs have
not achieved its original goal in closing the achievement gap in poor and middle school children. Perhaps it is
time to find other ways to close that gap.
1. The government valued the early childhood education in order to _____.
A. develop the children's communication
B. help the children to learn by playing
C. get the children prepared for the kindergarten
D. train the children formally and regularly
2. What can we know about the studies from the second paragraph?
A. Children with good early education may have a rich life.
B. The orphan children are usually unhappy in their life.
C. Children without early education can do well at school.
D. Head Start programs are helpful to the poor children.
3. The explanation of Time Magazine online suggests that _____.
A. early childhood education is helpless to the child's grade
B. it is good for young children to receive early education
C. early education can help children follow the grade
D. the younger the children are, the more clever they will be
4. The main idea of the last paragraph is that _____.
A. early childhood education is very necessary
B. Head Start programs have helped children a lot
C. early education is the most important to life's success
D. better ways should be found to help the poor children
5. What attitude does the author hold towards early childhood education?
A. approving
B. opposed
C. objective
D. subjective

"Get your hands off me, I have been stolen," the laptop, a portable computer, shouted. That is a new
solution to laptop computer theft: a program that lets owners give their property a voice when it has been
taken.
The program allows users to display alerts on the missing computer's screen and even to set a spoken
message. Tracking software for stolen laptops has been on the market for some time, but this is thought
to be the first that allows owners to give the thief a piece of their mind.
Owners must report their laptop missing by visiting a website, which sends a message to the model:
a red and yellow "lost or stolen" sign appears on its screen when it is started. Under the latest version (版
本) of the software, users can also send a spoken message.
The message can be set to reappear every 30 seconds, no matter how many times the thief closes it.
"One customer sent a message saying, 'You are being tracked. I am right at your door'," said Carrie
Hafeman, chief executive of the company which produces the program, Retriever.
In the latest version, people can add a spoken message. For example, the laptop's speakers will say:"Help,
this laptop is reported lost or stolen. If you are not my owner, report me now."
The Retriever software package, which costs $29.95 but has a free trial period, has the functions of
many security software programs.Owners can remotely switch to an alternative password if they fear that
the thief has also got hold of the access details.
If a thief accesses the internet with the stolen laptop, Retriever will collect information on the internet
service provider in use, so that the police can be alerted to its location.
Thousands of laptops are stolen every year form homes and offices, but with the use of laptops increasing,
the number stolen while their owners are out and about has been rising sharply.
Other security software allows users to erase data remotely or lock down the computer.
1. The expression"to give the thief a piece of their mind"can be understood as "_____".
A. to give the thief an alert mind
B. to express the owners' anger to the thief
C. to remind the thief of this conscience
D. to make the thief give up his mind
2. Different from other security software, Retriever can _____.
A. record the stealing process
B. help recognize the lost laptop
C. lock down the computer remotely
D. send a spoken message
3. One function of the program is that it allows the owner to _____ at a distance.
A. change some access details for switching on the laptop
B. turn on the laptop by using the original password
C. operate the laptop by means of an alternative password
D. erase the information kept in the stolen laptop
4. Which of the following can best summarize the main idea of the passage?
A. With no Retriever, thousands of laptops are stolen every year.
B. A new soft ware provides a means to reduce laptop theft.
C. Retriever has helped to find thieves and lost computers.
D. A new program offers a communication platform with the thief.

In the past, people who graduated from college felt proud of their academic (学业的) achievements and
confident that their degree would help them to find a good job.
However, in the past four years the job market has changed greatly. This year's college graduates are
facing one of the worst job markets. For example, Ryan Stewart, a graduate of San Jose State University,
got a degree in religious studies, but he has not gotten any job offers. He points out that many people already
working are getting laid off and don't have jobs, so it's even harder for new college graduates to find jobs.
Four years ago, the future looked bright for his class of 2006. There were many high-tech ("dot com")
job opportunities, graduates received many job offers, and they were able to get jobs with high salaries and
benefits such as health insurance and paid vacations. However,"Times have changed. It's a new market,"
according to an officer of the university.
The officer says students who do find jobs started preparing two years ago. They worked during summer
vacations, they have had several short-time jobs, and they majored in fields that are still paying well, such as
accounting or nursing.
Even teaching is not a secure profession now. Ryan Stewart wanted to be a teacher. But instead he will
probably go back to school in order to become a college teacher. He thinks college teaching could be a good
career even in a bad economy.
In conclusion, these days a college degree does not automatically lead to a good job with a high salary.
Some students can only hope that the value of their degree will increase in the future.
1. What did a college degree mean to people in the past?
A. It was a proof of their professional skills.
B. It would guarantee their quick promotion (升职).
C. It built up their confidence in the job market.
D. It would help them to start an academic career.
2. Why does Ryan Stewart want to be a college teacher?
A. Teaching jobs are well-paid.
B. He majored in teaching in the university.
C. College teaching is less challenging than high-tech jobs.
D. College teaching career won't be influenced by economy.
3. It can be concluded from the passage that _____.
A. the value of a college degree has decreased now
B. new college graduates today can't find any job
C. a college degree can still lead to a good job
D. graduates must prepare early to find jobs
