After six months of living in New Zealand, I realized one thing. Despite my  1  for greater contact with local students,  2  I initiated(开始) the contact, it wouldn’t happen. Local students are not interested in contacts with the international students, because they regard us as shy,  3   and sometimes snobby (势利的) people. Of course we know that’s not true. I want to change their opinions.
After  4    the problem, I put on my “confidence mask” each morning and walked around with a smile on my face. I chatted with people whenever I had the chance. I showed that I was not afraid to  5    them, and that I was worthy of being a friend.
A side-effect of my  6    confidence was that my emotions occasionally broke down Only in the  7    of my room, where no one could see, would I reveal my real emotions. All the rejections, funny looks, and  8    behind my back calling me a weirdo(古怪的人) melted  into tears. Once that was done, I would put on my confidence mask once again and start a new day.
It finally worked  My name became known throughout the school as I appeared to be 9    and active. Slowly, I discovered that I no longer needed to put on my confidence mask. I had real   friends. Instead of dragging myself to school and  10   to be happy, I was truly happy. I could not believe it when I was elected to the student government as Deputy Head boy----the first international student to receive the title.
From my  11    in New Zealand, I believe one thing will always be true: If you try your best to reach your goals, you’ll achieve your  12    dreams.

A Charlotte N.C. man was charged with first-degree murder of a 79-year-old woman whom police said he scared to death. Can the guy be held responsible for the woman’s death? Prosecutors (公诉人) said that he can under the state’s murder rule, which allows someone to be charged with murder if he or she causes another person’s death while committing or fleeing from a severe crime—even if he or she doesn’t kill someone on purpose.
But, medically speaking, can someone actually be frightened to death? We asked Martin Samuels, chairman of the neurology department at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
Absolutely, no question about it.
The body has a natural protective method called the fight-or-flight response, which was originally described by Walter Cannon, chairman of Harvard University’s physiology department from 1906 to 1942. If, in the wild, an animal is faced with a life-threatening situation, the automatic nervous system responds by increasing heart rate, increasing blood flow to the muscles, and slowing digestion, among other things. All of this increases the chances of succeeding in a fight or running away from an aggressive beast. This process certainly would be of help to early humans. However, in the modern world there is obvious decline of the fight-or-flight response.
The autonomic nervous system uses the chemical messenger to send signals to various parts of the body to activate the fight-or-flight response. This chemical is poisonous in large amounts; it damages the organs such as the heart, lungs, liver and kidneys. It is believed that almost all sudden deaths are caused by damage to the heart. There is almost no other organ that would fail so fast as to cause sudden death.
By the way, any strong positive or negative emotions such as happiness or sadness can cause the same result. There are people who have died in excitement or in religious passion. There was a case of a golfer who hit a hole in one, turned to his partner and said, “I can die now”, and then he dropped dead.
小题1:What is Martin Samuels’ attitude to the possibility of being frightened to death?
A.Approval.B.Disapproval.C.Doubtful.D.Indifferent.
小题2:What can we learn about the fight-or-flight response according to the passage?
A.The fight-or-flight response was raised and proved by Martin Samuels.
B.It is a natural protective method that can’t be found in all creatures but humans.
C.The ancient humans had a better fight-or-flight response than modern ones.
D.The fight-or-flight response is beneficial to both our actions and organs.
小题3:What activity can we infer is less likely to damage the organs?
A.Winning an unexpected fortune.
B.Missing a dead family member.
C.Watching a horror movie.
D.Listening to a sweet song.
小题4:The purpose of the passage is ______.
A.to explain why people will die of a heart attack
B.to offer some advice on protecting us from heart failure

D.to show strong emotions can cause a sudden death

How do you know if your home is an easy aim for thefts? Around the holidays, many families don't consider taking proper measures to prevent their homes from suffering holiday thefts. With just a few simple steps, you can better make sure of the safety of your home during all of the holiday celebrations. Here are a few tips for making it difficult to tell you are away from home.

Strange Baby-Naming Laws
Germany Parents are banned by law from using last names and the names of objects and products as first names. A child’s first name must clearly indicate his or her sex, and all names must be approved by the office of vital statistics in the area in which the child was born.
Iceland The country’s naming committee consults the National Register of Persons to determine if a name is acceptable. If parents want to go off-list, they must apply for approval and pay a fee, and the name must contain only letters in the Icelandic alphabet.
New Zealand The country’s Births, Deaths, and Marriages Registration Act of 1995 prohibits parents from choosing a name that “ might cause offense to a reasonable person; is unreasonably long; or is, includes, or resembles an official title or rank,” including, apparently, Adolf Hitler and Yeah Detroit—both names recently rejected.
Denmark If Danish parents prefer a moniker not on the list of 7,000 preapproved baby names, they must get permission from local church and government officials. Fifteen to 20 percent of the 1,100 reviewed names—including creative spellings of common names, last names as first names, and unusual names—are rejected each year.

Some years ago, writing in my diary used to be a usual activity. I would return from school and spend the expected half hour recording the day’s events, feelings, and impressions in my little blue diary. I did not really need to express my emotions by way of words, but I gained a certain satisfaction from seeing my experiences forever recorded on paper. After all, isn’t accumulating memories a way of preserving the past?
When I was thirteen years old, I went on a long journey on foot in a great valley, well-equipped with pens, a diary, and a camera. During the trip, I was busy recording every incident, name and place I came across. I felt proud to be spending my time productively, dutifully preserving for future generations a detailed description of my travels. On my last night there, I wandered out of my tent, diary in hand. The sky was clear and lit by the glare of the moon, and the walls of the valley looked threatening behind their screen of shadows. I automatically took out my pen…
At that point, I understood that nothing I wrote could ever match or replace the few seconds I allowed myself to experience the dramatic beauty of the valley. All I remembered of the previous few days were the dull characterizations I had set down in my diary.
Now, I only write in my diary when I need to write down a special thought or feeling. I still love to record ideas and quotations that strike me in books, or observations that are particularly meaningful. I take pictures, but not very often—only of objects I find really beautiful. I’m no longer blindly satisfied with having something to remember when I grow old. I realize that life will simply pass me by if I stay behind the camera, busy preserving the present so as to live it in the future.
I don’t want to wake up one day and have nothing but a pile of pictures and notes. Maybe I won’t have as many exact representations of people and places; maybe I’ll forget certain facts, but at least the experiences will always remain inside me. I don’t live to make memories—I just live, and the memories form themselves.
小题1:Before the age of thirteen, the author regarded keeping a diary as a way of ______.
A.observing her school routineB.expressing her satisfaction
C.impressing her classmatesD.preserving her history
小题2:What caused a change in the author’s understanding of keeping a diary?
A.A dull night on the journey.B.The beauty of the great valley.
C.A striking quotation from a book.D.Her concerns for future generations.
小题3:What does the author put in her diary now?
A.Notes and beautiful pictures.B.Special thoughts and feelings.
C.Detailed accounts of daily activities.D.Descriptions of unforgettable events.
小题4:The author comes to realize that to live a meaningful life is ______.
A.to experience itB.to live the present in the future
C.to make memoriesD.to give accurate representations of it
