M: Honey, the kids really want to get a puppy. I think we should go to the animal shelter and pick one out for them.

W: I don’t know if they’re ready yet. It’s a lot of responsibility to take care of a pet. I’m afraid we’ll just end up taking care of it.

M: I’ll make sure they do. I’ve already talked to them. I think it will help them become more mature.

W: Well, what kind of dog would we get?

M: Whatever kind is friendly, happy, and doesn’t bark too much.

W: Well, maybe we should research this before we rush into it!

M: OK, I will. I think this is something we need to do for them.

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery is one of Edinburgh’s most extraordinary buildings—a great red sandstone neo-gothic palace which sits proudly on the city’s skyline. Following a dramatic three-year redecoration, completed in December 2011, the Gallery now offers 17 new displays. Each of these explores different aspects of the story of Scotland and her people.

The Building

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery was designed by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson as a holy palace for Scotland’s heroes and heroines. The portraits depict(刻画) the men and women whose lives and achievements helped shape Scotland and the wider world. The Gallery is also home to the NGS’s outstanding collection of photographs which includes around 6,000 works by the early Scottish pioneers of the medium, Robert Adamson and David Octavius Hill as well as new works by leading-edge contemporary photographers.

Visitor Facilities

They were confident that the 12-year-old girl would reach her goal of making 50,000 of her “Joy Jars” which were filled with candy and toys for sick children. They were exploring other medical treatments in Europe. They continued to pray and encouraged others to do the same. Unfortunately, their prayers were answered differently than they hoped.

What is art? It is very difficult to come 1 with a thorough answer. Tons of people have their own opinions and think they know what art 2 (true) is. Most people’s answers are too general to distinguish what art is. Art is a creative form of work,3 (design) to have a purpose and show emotion.

I remember a mini house glued on paper for my family. Art has to have a connection between the artist and the actual art project itself. As is the case with the Statue of Liberty, and freedom.

I went to watch the ballet The Peony Pavilion last Sunday’s evening. Because I think ballet was more or less the same everywhere, I was total unprepared for its unique beauty. I was absorb as soon as the curtain rose up. The performance borrowed a lot from Chinese dance and music, but the Eastern influence on the ballet was clear. The production was filled in colours and romantic symbols, and challenged my sense in new ways. So much did I enjoy that it has changed my opinion about ballet. I can’t wait to going again!

【题目】 Asking for help is a sign of strength rather than weakness. In American culture, the independent individual is seen as their ideal. As the University of Missouri at St. Louis states on its website under the heading Key American Values, “Americans have been trained since very early in their lives to consider themselves as separate individuals who are responsible for their own situations in life and their own destinies.” The value also makes them think they can do everything themselves, and makes them feel bad about asking for help when they need it.

And when it comes to work situations, when they think about asking for help there, sometimes they fear that a request for help would make them look inept. While this has always been true for men, many women in the workplace have felt the need to try twice as hard as their male colleagues and do twice as much to get just as far and to prove their worth. Sometimes when we think about asking for help, our inner voices tell us, “See, if you admit you can’t do this on your own, they’ll see you for the imposter (骗子) you really are.”

But the fact is, even though individualism is on the rise, we can’t do everything by ourselves and we shouldn’t try.

Apple founder Steve Jobs once told the Santa Clara Valley Historical Association about the power of asking for help, and how he “never found anybody who didn’t want to help me when I asked them for help”. He said, at the age of 12, he called Bill Hewlett, co-founder of Hewlett-Packard, on the phone after getting his number from the phone book and asking him for spare parts so he could build a frequency counter(计频器). And Hewlett agreed and offered young Jobs a summer job assembling frequency counters.

“If you’re afraid of failing, you won’t get very far,” Jobs said.

1What is the first paragraph mainly about?

A.What key American values are.B.Why Americans refuse to ask for help.

C.Asking for help is a sign of strength.D.Americans are responsible for their life.

2Which of the following can replace the underlined word “inept” in Paragraph 2?

A.impoliteB.depressedC.incompetentD.sensitive

3What can be learned from this US cultural phenomenon?

A.Americans suffer a lot from mutual distrust.

B.Americans see weakness as a sign of strength.

C.Americans should learn to build up confidence.

D.Americans think highly of individual values.

4What can we learn from Jobs’ words in the last paragraph?

A.Don’t hesitate to ask for help.B.Be brave to try whatever you want.

C.Never ask for help.D.Learn to cooperate with others.
