¡¾´ð°¸¡¿Dear Mike,
I am more than glad to know that you are interested in the traditional Chinese literature. It's never easy to learn Chinese characters and essays. Even native Chinese speakers may find it hard to learn them well so you don¡¯t have to feel upset. Here are some useful tips.
First, turn to the Internet for help when you have an unsolved problem, where you can learn how to read and write the characters. Second, you can learn from Chinese people around and I¡¯m always here to help you. But the most important is to keep on learning and reading. Only by constant learning and reading can you promote your understanding to the traditional Chinese literature. You are sure to make progress!
Best wishes!

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿Halloween¡¾1¡¿(celebrate) every year. But just how and when did this custom happen? Is it just a harmless celebration?
¡¾2¡¿word ¡°Halloween¡± actually has its origins in the Catholic Church. It comes from a change of All Hallows Eve. All hallows Day, or All Saint¡¯s Day. November 1, is a Catholic day. But in the 5th century BC, summer officially ended on October 31. It was believed¡¾3¡¿, on that day, the spirits of all those¡¾4¡¿had died throughout the year would come back in search of¡¾5¡¿(live) bodies for the next year. It was believed to be their only hope for the afterlife.¡¾6¡¿(natural) the living did not want to be taken away. So¡¾7¡¿the night of October 31,¡¾8¡¿(village) would put out the fires in their homes¡¾9¡¿(make) them cold and unwanted. They would then dress up in all manners of strange customs and noisily walked around the neighborhood, being as wild¡¾10¡¿possible in order to frighten away spirits looking for people alive.

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social-progress and prosperity. Others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.
I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.
However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: "I may have lost, but it doesn't matter because I really didn't try." What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistake belief that¡ªone's self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve (»º½â) can we discover a new meaning in competition.

D. Fear of failure should be removed in competition.

The first day of my camping isn¡¯t exact what I wanted. We have to get up early to make our beds before our teacher Miss Li come to inspect. After breakfast we have some of free time. Yesterday morning I went fishing, but the only thing I catch was a tree branch. In the afternoon, there are different activity like horseback riding and hiking. They¡¯re fun, so nothing new for me. In the evening, everyone is assigned a different task to get dinner ready. Yesterday, I was in charge of prepare the hot dogs, but I accidentally dropped it in the fire. The best part of camp is at night, where we sit around a campfire and tell stories.

The book I'm reading of talks about afternoon tea in Britain. It is said to have started in the early 1800's. Have tea in the late afternoon provides a bridge between lunch and dinner, that may not be served until 8 o'clock at night. This custom soon becomes another meal of day. Interesting, it had a connection by the British porcelain (´ÉÆ÷) industry. Tea in China was traditionally drank from cups without handles. When tea got popular in Britain, there was a crying need for good cup with handles to suit British habits. This made for the grow in the porcelain industry.
