Driving a car is not just handling controls and judging speed and distance. It requires you to predict what other road users will do and get ready to react to something unexpected. When alcohol is consumed, it enters your bloodstream and acts as a depressant (抑制药), damaging eyesight, judgment and co-ordination(协调), slowing down reaction time and greatly increasing the risk of accidents. Even below the drink driving link, driving will be affected.
Alcohol may take a few minutes to be absorbed into the bloodstream and start action on the brain. Absorption rate is increased when drinking on an empty stomach or when consuming drinks mixed with fruit juice. To get rid of alcohol from the body is a very slow process and it is not possible to speed it up with any measures like taking a shower or having a cup of tea or coffee.
The present Road Traffic Ordinance states clearly that the limit of alcohol concentration is:
● 50 milligrams of alcohol per 100ml of blood; or
● 22 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath; or
● 67 milligrams of alcohol per 100ml of urine (尿液).
Drivers who cause traffic accidents, or who commit a moving traffic offence or are being suspected of drink driving will be tested.
Any driver found drinking beyond the limit will be charged. The driver declared guilty may be fined a maximum of HK $25,000 and be sentenced to up to 3 years in prison and punished for 10 driving-offence points; or temporarily banned from driving.
The same punishment applies to failing to provide specimens (样本) for breath, blood or urine tests without good excuse.
Drink driving is a criminal offence(违法犯罪行为). Be a responsible driver, think before you drink. For the safety of yourself and other road users, never drive after consuming alcohol.
1.The first paragraph is mainly about ________.
A. the introduction of driving skills
B. the damage of drinking to your body
C. the effect of drinking on driving
D. the process of alcohol being absorbed
2.The underlined word “it” in the second paragraph refers to “________”.
A. alcohol B. absorption
C. blood D. process
3.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Drinking below the drink driving limit has no effect on driving.
B. Alcohol is taken in more quickly when drunk with fruit juice.
C. Having a cup of tea helps to get rid of alcohol from the body.
D. 50 milligrams of alcohol per 100ml of breath is below the drink limit.
4.A driver suspected of (被怀疑) drink driving ________.
A. should provide specimens for testing
B. will be forbidden to drive for 3years
C. will be punished for 10 driving-offence points
D. should pay a maximum fine of HK $25,000

I grew up in a house where the TV was seldom turned on and with one wall in my bedroom entirely lined with bookshelves, most of my childhood was spent on books I could get hold of. In fact, I grew up thinking of reading as natural as breathing and books unbelievably powerful in shaping perspectives (观点) by creating worlds we could step into, take part in and live in.
With this unshakable belief, I, at fourteen, decided to become a writer. Here too, reading became useful. Every writer starts off knowing that he has something to say, but being unable to find the right ways to say it. He has to find his own voice by reading widely and discovering which parts of the writers he agrees or disagrees with, or agrees with so strongly that it reshapes his own world. He cannot write without loving to read, because only through reading other people’s writing can one discover what works, what doesn’t and, in the end, together with lots of practice, what voice he has.
Now I am in college, and have come to realize how important it is to read fiction (文学作品).As a law student, my reading is in fact limited to subject matter — the volume (量) of what I have to read for classes every week means there is little time to read anything else. Such reading made it all the clearer to me that I live in a very small part in this great place called life. Reading fiction reminds me that there is life beyond my own. It allows me to travel across the high seas and along the Silk Road, all from the comfort of my own armchair, to experience, though secondhand, exciting experiences that I wouldn’t necessarily be able to have in my lifetime.

B. It opens up a wider world for him.
C. It makes his college life more interesting.
D. It increases his interest in worldwide travel.

Blue whales are the largest animals ever known to have existed on the planet, and they can grow to a length of 100 feet and weigh more than 330,000 pounds. But recently researchers have found that these whales are on the move and they have migrated from California waters to areas off Canada and Alaska for the first time since commercial whaling ended in 1965.
The researchers identified 15 blue whales that have appeared off the coast of British Columbia and the Gulf of Alaska since 1997. Four of these whales were recognized as ones that were once sighted off California shores, suggesting that the whales are returning to an old migration pattern between the coasts.
Before commercial whaling began in the early 1900s, blue whales were found widely throughout the North Pacific and California waters. But from the 1920s to the 1960s,whaling severely reduced the whale populations. Blue whales never recovered in the Northern Pacific, making sightings in this area rare. However, much larger groups of whales have been observed close to California since the 1970s.
The scientists had previously thought that the California population was separate from the population that had historically lived in North Pacific waters. But the current study shows that whales off the coast of British Columbia and the Gulf of Alaska are likely part of the California population.
To identify the blue whales, the researchers looked at photos of cetaceans taken in the North Pacific Ocean and compared them with a library of blue whale pictures taken along the West Cost of the United States and Southern Pacific. Up to now, the researchers are not quite sure why the whales are changing their migration patterns, but they suspect that the whales may be following their food moving farther north by the changes in ocean conditions.
1.According to the passage, blue whales are .
A. following a fixed route of migration
B. dying out due to commercial whaling
C. moving from the south to the north
D. rarely found in the Southern Pacific
2.The whale population in the northern Pacific .
A. is different from the California population
B. is probably part of the California population
C. has become the largest group since the 1970s
D. has lived there since the 1960s
3.The underlined word "cetaceans" in Paragraph 5 probably means .
A. land creatures B. whale species
C. ocean conditions D. migration patterns
4.What might make blue whales migrate according to the researchers?
A. Commercial whaling. B. Weather conditions.
C. Life reproduction. D. Food resources.

Nobody likes having to deal with an upset child. If your little one is hurt, scared or sad, your heart breaks for her. If she’s mad, it can make you mad. You want to be there for her and comfort her, but the best way to do that will depend mainly on two things: why she’s upset and how old she is. Be calm and open-minded when trying to comfort your upset child.
Try to find out why your child is upset, because that affects how you should respond and what will be most effective in trying to comfort her. Take her aside and sit down to talk on her level, physically and emotionally. Be sure she knows she has your complete attention while she’s telling you about the friend who wouldn’t share her new toy and so on. Even if you’ve got 20 other things you need to get done, make yourself take a break and focus on her for a few minutes.
Listen carefully to what your child says, and also pay attention to what she’s not saying. If she says she’s upset because “she hates her stupid school”, you must “choose to accept it” — to read between the lines. Maybe she’s struggling with her studies, or the teacher scolded(责备) her in front of everybody. Patiently listen and try to draw her out so you know what kind of problem you’re dealing with.
Sometimes just knowing someone hears her pain goes a long way toward comforting an upset child. Don’t make excuses or blame others, just let her know her feelings are natural and understandable. Give her permission to feel sad for a little bit or even cry a little, and give her a big hug. Then help her think of ways to get over the hurt and refocus her attention on another activity or friend.
1.What is the purpose of the author in the passage?
A. To show an upset child is very tough.
B. To share his experience of keeping a child.
C. To tell how to comfort an upset child.
D. To get advice on how to raise a child.
2. When faced with an upset child, the parents________.
A. may feel at a loss(不知所措)what to do next
B. should turn to experts for advice
C. should keep him company all the time
D. will easily get angry and frustrated
3.When parents have a talk with their child patiently, she can .
A. focus her attention on the talk
B. understand her parents easily
C. talk about her new toy with you
D. open her heart to the parents
4.The underlined part in the passage means to________.
A. advise her to tell the reason
B. drive her out of home
C. take her to the outside
D. blame her
