【题目】 Children born in the early 21st century will likely never know a world without the Internet, television, and other forms of instant intellectual satisfaction. The average high school student in any developed nation has access to more information than some of the greatest minds in history, such as Socrates or Da Vinci, ever had in their lifetimes. Some critics of this phenomenon fear that instantaneous(瞬时的)access to all of this information has the potential to overload users, however. Instead of researching deeper into one particular subject, many people are now dabbling on(浅尝)the surface of many interests and subjects of study at the same time. Author Richard Foreman described those who have spread themselves thinly across a wide range of subjects as pancake people.

For many generations, scholars and artists tended to concentrate their energy on one particular subject. For William Shakespeare, that interest was literature; for Mozart, it was musical composition; and for Newton, physics. Visual artists were not expected to understand higher mathematics, nor were philosophers (哲学家)expected to study engineering. Without widespread access to libraries or the ability to spread their latest creations to the rest of the world instantly, many people worked hard in relative obscurity(冷门)to explore the depths of their chosen jobs or subjects of interest.

With the development of the Internet and other sources of information that can be accessed quickly and easily, many people attempt to gain at least a working knowledge of many different subjects. As a result, a new generation have essentially become the proverbial jacks of all trades, but masters of none. A linguist(语言学家)from the 18th may have studied Spanish or French until he or she could translate even the most complex literary works written in those languages, but modern pancake people only learn enough of the language to travel as a tourist. As long as the information necessary to perform a task or create a new work is at a person’s fingertipsthere is always the risk of that person losing some intellectual curiosity.

1What can we know from the first paragraph?

A.People nowadays have access to more information than before.

B.Interest is becoming more and more important in modern society.

C.Children will know nothing about the world without modern social media.

D.Students in developed nations know more than the greatest minds in history.

2How does the author develop his argument in Paragraph 2?

A.By comparison.B.By example.

C.By classification.D.By cause and effect.

3Pancake people refer to those who___________________.

A.are gifted in music, art or literature

B.are knowledgeable in different fields

C.know a working knowledge of many different subjects

D.tend to concentrate their energy on one particular subject

4What’s the author’s attitude to pancake people?

A.Disapproving.B.Favorable.

C.Doubtful.D.Unconcerned.

【题目】阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为 150 左右。

I was lacking in everything needed to start a new friendship.

My parents moved to the town when they decided to look for new jobs but they didn’t realize I was really hurt when I said goodbye to my old friends. It felt awful to be a new student in the school and when my classmates were chatting, what I could do was to be caught up in my thoughts watching the clouds outside the window. I was not good at math or history; nor was I good at drawing or dancing. I was shy and timid. I had a few friends back at my hometown and it seemed that they were the only ones who I could be friends with for my whole life. I felt I had achieved a point of saturation with regard to having friends and I could make no further addition to my friend list. I was ashamed of myself, so I believed I deserved no notice from others until Emily came to my world.

Emily was fearless, outspoken and easy to go. She was everything I was not and I was too shy to come out of my shell. I met Emily in school almost every day and yet I never talked to her. We were in the same class but we were like poles apart. How I wished I could be like her or at least be a friend of hers!

It was another ordinary day.

I wandered to the bus stop in the morning and waited for the school bus. Birds were singing songs with their friends but who could I sing songs with? I got on the bus and went straight to my usual seat, complaining in a low voice about getting up early and going to school like every other day, and about how things were going to be the same all over again. Little did I realize something different would happen that day.

Para. 1:

When I got up to get down the bus, my schoolbag was stuck in the armrest. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I got noticed by Emily, who brought me courage to start a new friendship!

【题目】 In the United Statesthe baby boomer generation(婴儿潮一代) include those who were born in the time after World War II. Those babies have retired or are now reaching the retirement age. As these adults age, many of their adult children worry about how to take care of their aging parents. In the United States it is not common for several generations to live under one roof. Once children grow up and get married, they move out, leaving their aging parents to care for themselves. When these aging parents can no longer take care of themselves because of age or illness, it is not uncommon for adult children in the US to place their elderly parents in a nursing home.

A nursing home is a place that offers care for the elderly and ill. As the name suggestsnursing homes have professionals including nurses, doctors and social workers to help aging adults deal with the challenges of daily life. And their mental health could be guaranteed for elderly people to get relaxed, accompanied by those of the same age. Most nursing homes also have social activities for the elderly to participate in and keep active. These activities range from games to dance classes, and movie nights. Nursing homes are supposed to provide three nutritious meals for their residents.

Nursing homes are controversial, however. There have been cases across the country of staff in nursing homes treating the elderly residents badly and even robbing them. There are different states and federal agencies that are supposed to oversee(监管) nursing homes. Some people feel that it should be the responsibility of family members, especially adult children, to care for their aging or sick parents. However, many adult children have their own children and families to take care of, and do not have the means to care for their elderly parents; others worry about medical skills needed if their elderly parents are seriously ill. And these problems of caring for parents are bothering more and more adults in the US at present.

1The first paragraph mainly about___________.

A.when the baby boomer generation in the US were born

B.whether the elderly and their children should live together

C.why Americans put their elderly parents in nursing homes

D.how Americans look after their aging parents differently

2How many advantages of nursing homes are mentioned?

A.Three.B.Four.

C.Five.D.Six.

3What’s the writer’s attitude toward sending parents to nursing homes?

A.Indifferent.B.Understandable.

C.Favorable.D.Disapproving.

4What’s the purpose of the text?

A.To discuss how to care for aging parents.

B.To ask the government to oversee nursing homes.

C.To prove nursing homes do more harm than good.

D.To show problems faced by American adult children.

【题目】 We know that too much of the wrong kind of food can be bad for our health, but for some people having a food allergy, eating certain things can actually be harmful. Now it is seemingly affecting more and more of us.

An allergy is caused by the immune system fighting substances in the environment, known as allergens, that it should see as harmless. 1It means people have to spend their lives following strict dietary restrictions and worrying about the ingredients of everything they consume. We often hear about people having allergies to dairy products and to peanuts. Last year a teenager died after suffering a fatal allergic reaction from eating a baguette containing sesame seeds. 2

Research has found that this problem is particularly affecting children. 3 Dr Alexandra Santos from King’s College London says food allergy now affects about 7 percent of children in the UK, and 9 percent of those in Australia.

4 Dr Santos says, the increase in allergies is not simply the effect of society becoming more aware of them and better at diagnosing them. 5 She adds that possible factors are pollution, dietary changes and less exposure to bacteria, which change how our immune systems respond.

A.So what might be the cause?

B.It seems to be more environmental.

C.Similarly, food allergic reaction is deadly.

D.This led to a call for better food-labeling laws.

E.Besides, more adults are suffering from food allergies.

F.However, food allergies can cause life-threatening reactions.

G.More and more of them are having allergic reactions to certain foodstuffs.
