Any diet on which you eat fewer calories than you need to get through the day — like an 800-calorie-per-day diet can be dangerous. Diets that don't allow any fat also can be bad for you. Everyone needs a certain amount of fat in their diet — up to 30% of total calories — so no one should eat a completely fat-free diet.

Don't have diets that restrict (限制)certain food groups, either. A diet that requires you to say no to bread or pasta or allows you to eat only fruit is unhealthy. You won't get the vitamins and minerals you need. And although you may lose weight, you'll probably gain it back as soon as you start eating normally again.

Some people start dieting because they think all the problems in their lives are because of weight. Others have an area of their lives that they can't control, like an alcoholic parent, so they focus on something they can control — their exercise and food intake.

People who diet may get lots of praise from friends and family when they start losing pounds, which makes them feel good. But eventually a person reaches a weight level — and doesn't lose as much weight as before because the body is trying to keep a healthy weight, so they aren't any happier.

Some people may find it hard to control their eating, so they stick with an extreme diet for a little while, but then eat tons of food. Feeling guilty about the binge, they use laxatives(泻药). Eating too little to maintain a healthy weight or eating only to throw up the calories are both eating disorders, which are harmful to a person's health.

1. Which is not the result of restricting certain food groups?

  A. lose weight for a short period          B. unhealthy

  C. short of nutrition                     D. hungry

2. The reasons why some people start and keep dieting DON’T include__________.

  A. They think their trouble comes from their weight.

  B. They have an alcoholic parent.

  C. Other people’s praise when they lose some weight.

  D. There is something they can’t control except food intake.

3. The underlined phrase in the last paragraph refers to _________.

  A. a fat-free diet               B. a special diet

  C. eating too much             D. eating too little

4. Which of the following statements is true?

  A. A person needs about 800 calories each day.

  B. A person who doesn’t eat bread is unhealthy.

  C. An improper diet may cause eating disorder.

  D. Fat takes up the most part of calories inside body.

5. According to the passage, when people want to lose weight, they should_________.

  A. avoid eating some food that can lead to being fat   B. control their eating amount and times

Honestly, since my daughter was born, I have thought a lot about how to raise a child. I once heard a story that told about when a baby was born. The story said that when a baby was born, a new master was born. The parents of that baby would become the servants. The question is: Why? Based on my observation, this phenomenon is true. Most parents who don't pay much attention to their kids have difficulties with their kids' attitude.

I'll make a comparison of how two families raise their children. The first one is a family with three children. Both mother and father never say "No" to their children's demands. As a result, all of their children became stubborn and won't listen to their parents’ words, "We can't."

The second family educated their children strictly from one year old to high school. The parents never approved or agreed directly to give their children what they wanted. They always postponed one or two days, even if they could afford it. Due to the way their parents educated them, these children understood that if they wanted something, they had to wait or they had to make an effort first. As a result, all the kids from the second family successfully graduated from university on time.

In my opinion, if we want to be successful parents and raise our children well, we have to start disciplining them when they are toddlers but not wait until they become teenagers.

59. Why did the writer give two different stories in this passage?

  A. To help prove his opinion about raising a child.

  B. To list different ways that parents may take.

  C. To criticize some parents’ foolish action.

  D. To prove that his way of education is right.

60. What does the underlined word “postponed” in the third paragraph mean?

  A. Carried out at once.                 B. Gave up.

  C. Put off.                        D. Made a decision.

61. In the writer’s opinion, which of the following about raising a child is TRUE?

  A. Children should be respected once they were born.

  B. Parents should educate their children as early as possible.

  C. It is right time to educate their children when they are teenagers.

  D. Children should be helped whenever they make mistakes.

If you feel at present that you don’t have enough friends in your life, one reason may be that you have let yourself become too busy to make time for the relationships you already have. Starting and keeping friendship require effort and commitment(责任,义务,承诺).
Many of us let our lives become so busy with work and other commitments that we don’t get around to scheduling time for pleasure and renewal (叙旧) with the friends, relatives and acquaintances we already have.
Making the effort to call your friends more regularly and to accept more of the invitations you receive from others can improve your social life in a hurry!
Are there any people you could call right now and be assured of a pleasant welcome? Are there people that you could depend on to help you in time of difficulty? Can you have close talks with them? Do you have fun when you are together? Are you happy to have them in your life?
If you haven’t seen much of them lately, is it because you have become too busy? Have you grown apart? Was there an argument?
If the main reason you haven’t been getting together with the people you already know is that you have gotten too busy, take a good look at how you spend your time. Compare it with your real values and priorities(优先考虑的事) in life. Is your busy lifestyle really bringing you the quality of life that you want?
If you have become too busy for friends, why has this happened? Are you seeking material joys in your life at the expense of relationships with other human beings? Have you allowed your time to be over-committed because you never say ‘‘No” to anyone? Do you insist on doing things yourself that could be delegated to others? If so, why? Do you believe that everything depends on you?
Examine whether the way you are now spending your time exactly reflects your deepest values and priorities. Make sure that you schedule enough time for the things that are truly most important to you.
If you really want to keep friends in your life, make a space in your schedule, and a space in your heart for them.

“It hurts me more than you,” and “This is for your own good.” There are the statements my mother used to make years ago when I had to learn Latin, clean my room, stay home and do homework.

That was before we entered the “permissive period in education” in which we decided it was all right not to push our children to achieve their best in school. The schools and the educators made it easy on us.They taught that it was all right to be parents who take a let-alone policy. We stopped making our children do homework. We gave them calculators, turned on the television, left the teaching to the teachers and went on vacation.

Now teachers, faced with children who have been developing at their own pace for the past 15 years, are realizing we’ve made a terrible mistake. One such teacher is Sharon Clomps who says of her students—“so passive” —and wonders what has happened.Nothing is demanded of them, she believes.Television, says Clomps, contributes to children’s passivity.“We’re talking about a generation of kids who’ ve never been hurt or hungry. They have learned somebody will always do it for them, instead of saying ‘go and look it up’, you tell them the answer. It takes greater energy to say no to a kid.

Yes, it does.It takes energy and it takes work. It’s time for parents to end their vacation and come back to work. It’ s time to take the car away, to turn the TV off, to tell them it hurts you more than them but it’ s for their own good. It’s time to start  telling them no again.
