Do not miss meals. Before you leave home for a feast, have a small, low-fat snack. This may help to keep you from getting too excited before delicious foods.

Begin with clear soup, fruit or vegetables. A large glass of water before you eat may help you feel full. Use a small plate; a large plate will encourage you to have more than enough.

Better not have high-fat foods. Dishes that look oily or creamy have much fat in them.

Choose lean meat. Fill your plate with salad and green vegetables.

【题目】The discussion on renewable energy has been going on for at least a decade and people have relied on fossil fuels almost entirely for more than a century. However, the situation when fossil fuels were the most efficient and the cheapest source of energy has been left far in the past. Many countries such as Germany and Sweden have already made significant efforts to fix this situation, employing numerous power plants working on the renewable resources of energy. The most effective among these resources is geothermal(地热的)energy.

Geothermal energy does not depend on the world’s economic and political situation as strongly as fossil fuels do. Besides, extracting(提炼)fossil fuels adds to the price of energy produced from them. Therefore, geothermal energy is much cheaper than traditional ones, saving up to 80% of the costs over fossil fuels.

Being a renewable resource, geothermal energy produces less waste and pollution than traditional energy sources. In geothermal systems, carbon dioxide makes up about 10% of air produced. Overall, in order to produce the electricity that can be used for one hour, the geothermal systems produce 0.1 pound of carbon dioxide and other harmful gases. For a comparison, a power plant producing from gas produces up to 2 pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, and those power plants that work on coal(煤)produce an astonishing 3.6 pounds of greenhouse gases.

Low costs is another reason why using geothermal power plants should be the first choice for many countries. Geothermal heat systems require 25% to 50% less energy for work compared with the traditional systems for heating or cooling. Besides, geothermal equipment is less big: due to the very nature of geothermal energy, geothermal power plants have only a few moving parts, all of which can be easily sheltered inside a relatively small building. What’s more, the life span of geothermal equipment is rather long. All these make geothermal power stations easy to build and keep.

1Fossil fuels are more expensive than geothermal energy partly because _______.

A. it is free to use geothermal energy

B. the production of fossil fuels costs a lot

C. fossil fuels are nearly used up

D. geothermal energy doesn’t depend on political situation

2According to Paragraph 3, what can be concluded from the comparison?

A. Geothermal energy is environmentally friendly.

B. Gas and coal are often used to produce electricity.

C. Coal is much more efficient than gas.

D. The geothermal systems don’t produce harmful gases.

3Geothermal equipment is usually not as big as that of traditional energy because of______.

A. the life span of geothermal equipment

B. geothermal power plants

C. the nature of geothermal energy

D. the small buildings

4What is the main idea of this passage?

A. Many countries have benefited from geothermal energy.

B. Geothermal energy is well accepted.

C. Fossil fuels are being run out of.

D. Geothermal energy has many advantages.

【题目】 Water is a necessity of life. Rain, especially, helps plants grow and stay green. But too much rain, especially in cities, can lead to flooding. That can cause waste water systems to overflow and send pollutants into rivers and other waterways. To fight the problem, several cities in the United States are starting programs like rooftop gardens.

A team at the University of the District of Columbia in the nation's capital has created a garden on the top of one school building. The garden holds many kinds of plants to help absorb rainwater and grow food at the same time. Architect David Bell has designed five "green roofs" for the university. He says he is excited about the project because "it meant doing something more than just dealing with storm water management. It took advantage of a resource above the city and these flat roofs that aren't doing anything really became something that was about urban agriculture. " Rainwater is collected in large containers and sent through a system that waters the rooftop garden. The roof is filled with green life that appeals to insects.

In cities, “you don't have that many spaces to choose from and so rooftops are just (unused) space," says Caitlin Arlotta. She is a student in the school's Urban Agriculture program. The project is part of a research program to see which plants do well on rooftops. The researchers are looking at plants including strawberries, tomatoes and sweet potatoes. The university also has other green spaces. "We also have our own farm experiments," Arlotta said. “ Within each of those growing systems, we want to be able to tell people which sorts of these crops grow the best. "

Sandy Farber Bandier helps run UDC's Master Gardener program. It seeks to improve cities and make them beautiful by training people to become Master Gardeners. She says she's been surprised by the garden's output. ”My biggest surprise was that we produced 4, 250 pounds of produce the first year and was able to spread that to people in need. " She also likes being able to show people who live in D. C. and others beyond the nation's capital what and how food can be grown on a rooftop. “This is the future for food. You grow it here, you prepare it in a commercial kitchen, you distribute through farmers markets, food trucks, and then you recycle. "

1What do we know about the rooftop gardens?

A.Rooftop gardens are very common in average neighborhoods.

B.There are many sorts of plants there which help take in rainwater.

C.They're playing an important role in the city's food supply.

D.Rooftop gardens are no more than containers to collect rainwater.

2What can we infer from Paragraph 3?

A.Rooftops can offer enough space to plant crops.

B.Many plants like strawberries can grow well on rooftops.

C.Some univercity students are participating in the Urban Agriculture program.

D.The plants in rooftop gardens are attractive to many insects.

3How does Sandy Farber Bandier feel about the future of rooftop gardens?

A.Confident.

B.Doubtful.

C.Worried.

D.Ambiguous.

4What is the best title for the text?

A.Rainwater Necessity for Plant Life

B.Green Roofs-The Future of Urban Agriculture

C.The United States' Agriculture Program

D.Rooftop Gardens-Food Paradise

【题目】 Even if you love fish, actually cooking it in your kitchen can be a commitment. Long after the fish has been eaten, the pots washed, and the plates put in the dishwasher, the fish smell still exits.1 Luckily, expert cooks have figured out how you can cook your fish without leaving a smell that exists for days.

First off, know that truly fresh fish really shouldn't have much of an odor(气味)at all. So if you unwrap a package of fish and take a step back from the smell that greets you, throw it away because it's not fresh.2

A lot of the smell from cooking fish is because of the cooking method you use.3

However, other techniques, like cooking fish in paper, can put a lid on the problem before it starts. Cleaning experts recommend minimizing the odor before cooking by bathing fish in milk or a solution of lemon and water.

If it's too late and your home is beginning to smell like the parking lot of a seafood joint, then Good Housekeeping suggests mixing together vinegar and water and letting it boil for several minutes to get rid of the smell.

4 Shut any inside doors to keep the smell from spreading throughout the house and into bedrooms, but open up kitchen windows and doors to allow the smell to get out. And be sure to wipe any spills and throw away any trash containing fish bits.5 And the resulting sweet scent will make everyone forget about any fishy odor.

AFrying can cause a big smell problem.

BPrepare your home ahead offish cooking time.

CHere's how to make every room smell amazing.

DCooking fish wrong brings about terrible smells.

EWhen all else fails, bake up some cookies for dessert.

FBut, admittedly, even the freshest fish can get a bit of smell once it's cooked.

GIt can be enough to put even the most devoted fish eater off cooking it regularly.
