Dear Tom£¬
I¡¯m so glad to receive your e-mail and I¡¯m writing to say sorry for this late reply.
Recently, I¡¯ve been so busy with the first important exam of the new term that I failed to reply to your letter in time. As a Senior 3 student, I had to devote most of my time to reviewing my lessons during the winter holiday. However, I still managed to spare some time to pay a visit to my relatives and friends. I also read some novels to refresh myself.
In the new term, I will work hard and try to make greater progress, hoping to be admitted to my ideal/dream university and live up to my parents¡¯ expectations.
Yours,
Li Hua

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿The London Underground is one of the best transport networks in the world with around 24 million journeys made each day, so it is important that everything runs smoothly. Remember the following to travel like a Londoner.
Keep right on escalator(×Ô¶¯ÌÝ£©
London Underground asks that you stand on the right when using the escalators and leave the left free for others to walk down. If you are traveling in a big group, or with lots of shopping bags, stand and stay right and let others pass you---it will speed up the process and be a more pleasant journey for everyone!
Remember the ¡°rush hour¡±
The tube network is very busy during the rush hour. You can expect the trains and stations to be overcrowded between 7:30 and 9:30 in the morning and between 17:00 and 19:00 in the evening.
Move down the platform to find more space
As you enter the station platform, you will often find more room if you walk down to the end of the platform. Here, the train carriages are usually the emptiest as well.
Carry a bottle of water in warmer moths
The London Underground is over 150 years old and although the trains have been modernized, many still lack air conditioning and cooling units. Make sure you take a bottle of water with you, especially in the summer, as the long tube journeys can get very hot.
Keep your personal belongings safe
Like any large city be cautions of pickpockets operating in the busy stations and tubes. Carry a bag with zips
Plan your journey on the London Underground in advance with a free tube map. Click here to download.

An Open Letter to an Editor
I had an interesting conversation with a reporter recently ¡ª one who works for you. In fact, he¡¯s one of your best reporters. He wants to leave.
Your reporter gave me a copy of his r¨¦sum¨¦ (¼òÀú) and photocopies of six stories that he wrote for you. The headlines showed you played them proudly. With great enthusiasm, he talked about how he finds issues, approaches them, and writes about them, which tells me he is one of your best. I¡¯m sure you would hate to lose him.
Surprisingly, your reporter is not unhappy. In fact, he told me he really likes his job. He has a great assignment, and said you run a great paper. It would be easy for you to keep him, he said. He knows that the paper values him. He appreciates the responsibility you¡¯ve given him, takes ownership of his profession, and enjoys his freedom.
So why is he looking for a way out?
He talked to me because he wants his editors to demand so much more of him. He wants to be pushed, challenged, coached to new heights.
The reporter believes that good stories spring from good questions, but his editors usually ask how long the story will be, when it will be in, where it can play, and what the budget is.
He longs for conversations with an editor who will help him turn his good ideas into great ones. He wants someone to get excited about what he¡¯s doing and to help him turn his story idea upside down and inside out, exploring the best ways to report it. He wants to be more valuable for our paper. That¡¯s what you want for him, too, isn¡¯t it?
So your reporter has set me thinking.
Our best hope in keeping our best reporters, copy editors, photographers, artists ¡ª everyone ¡ª is to work harder to make sure they get the help they are demanding to reach their potential. If we can¡¯t do it, they¡¯ll find someone who can.
¡¾1¡¿What does the writer think of the reporter?
A. Optimistic. B. Imaginative.
C. Ambitious. D. Proud.
¡¾2¡¿What does the reporter want most from his editors in their talks?
A. Finding the news value of his stories.
B. Giving him financial support.
C. Helping him to find issues.
D. Improving his good ideas.
¡¾3¡¿ Who probably wrote the letter?
A. An editor. B. An artist.
C. A reporter. D. A reader.

Human remains of ancient settlements will be reburied and lost to science under a law that threatens researches into the history of humans in Britain, a group of leading archaeologists (¿¼¹Åѧ¼Ò) says. In a letter addressed to the justice secretary, Ken Clarke, 40 archaeologists write of their ¡°deep and widespread concern¡± about the issue. It centers on the law introduced by the Ministry of Justice in 2008 which requires all human remains unearthed in England and Wales to be reburied within two years, regardless of their age. The decision means scientists have too little time to study bones and other human remains of national and cultural significance.
¡°Your current requirement that all archaeologically unearthed human remains should be reburied, whether after a standard period of two years or further special extension, is contrary to basic principles of archaeological and scientific research and of museum practice,¡± they write.
The law applies to any pieces of bone uncovered at around 400 dig sites, including the remains of 60 or so bodies found at Stonehenge in 2008 that date back to 3,000 BC. Archaeologists have been granted a temporary extension to give them more time, but eventually the bones will have to be returned to the ground.
The arrangements may result in the waste of future discoveries at sites such as Happisburgh in Norfolk, where digging is continuing after the discovery of stone tools made by early humans 950,000 years ago. If human remains were found at Happisburgh, they would be the oldest in northern Europe and the first indication of what this species was. Under the current practice of the law those remains would have to be reburied and effectively destroyed.
Before 2008, guidelines allowed for the proper preservation and study of bones of sufficient age and historical interest, while the Burial Act 1857 applied to more recent remains. The Ministry of Justice assured archaeologists two years ago that the law was temporary, but has so far failed to revise it.
Mike Parker Pearson, an archaeologist at Sheffield University, said, ¡°Archaeologists have been extremely patient because we were led to believe the ministry was sorting out this problem, but we feel that we cannot wait any longer.¡±
The ministry has no guidelines on where or how remains should be reburied, or on what records should be kept.
¡¾1¡¿According to the passage, scientists are unhappy with the law mainly because ________.
A. it is only a temporary measure on the human remains
B. it is unreasonable and thus destructive to scientific research
C. it was introduced by the government without their knowledge
D. it is vague about where and how to rebury human remains
¡¾2¡¿Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?
A. Temporary extension of two years will guarantee scientists enough time.
B. Human remains of the oldest species were dug out at Happisburgh.
C. Human remains will have to be reburied despite the extension of time.
D. Scientists have been warned that the law can hardly be changed.
¡¾3¡¿What can be inferred about the British law governing human remains?
A. The Ministry of Justice did not intend to protect human remains.
B. The Burial Act 1857 only applied to remains uncovered before 1857.
C. The law on human remains hasn¡¯t changed in recent decades.
D. The Ministry of Justice has not done enough about the law.
¡¾4¡¿Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A. New discoveries should be reburied, the government demands.
B. Research time should be extended, scientists require.
C. Law on human remains needs thorough discussion, authorities say.
D. Law could bury ancient secrets for ever, archaeologists warn.

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿Bars are very important in providing a place where people can meet and make friends. People who enjoy a drink in a local bar are happier and have more friends. They are more likely to be engaged in conversations in small community pubs, and social skills improve after a drink.
Professor Robin Dunbar of Oxford University said, ¡°Friendship and communities are probably the two most important factors influencing our health and well-being. Making and maintaining friendships is something that has to be done in the real world. The digital world is simply no substitute(n.Ìæ´úÎï). Given the increasing tendency for our social life to be on the Internet rather than in real life, having relaxed, accessible places where people can meet old friends and make new ones becomes even more necessary.¡±
Tim Page, chief executive of CAMRA, said, ¡°Bars offer a social environment to enjoy a drink with friends in a responsible community setting. The role of community bars in ensuring well-being cannot be overstated. For that reason, we all need to do what we can to ensure that everyone has a ¡®local¡¯ near to where they live or work.¡±
Bars have long been part of British society and have played a key role in British social life since the 16th century. Bars came to represent the heart and soul of a community, providing both a place of entertainment and an engine for community bonding. In a world before the arrival of the motor car, the bar provided a venue in which people could get friendships and a sense of community.
But the closing decades of the 20th century witnessed major changes in both the style of bars (for example, themed bars) and their numbers. As of 2015, the number of bars declines sharply, with bars continuing to close at an average rate of 29 a week.
¡¾1¡¿What does a regular(n.³£¿Í) at a local bar having more friends prove?
A. The benefits brought by pub cultures
B. The popularity of local bars in Britain.
C. The relation between friendships and bars
D. The importance of face-to-face communication.
¡¾2¡¿What does Robin think is the tendency for social life?
A. More people will go to bars.
B. People will maintain friendships
C. People will trust the digital world
D. People will communicate more online.
¡¾3¡¿Why does Tim Page value the role of local bars?
A. They contribute to people¡¯s social happiness.
B. They are a place common people can afford.
C. They are a good place to spread cultural values.
D. They are accessible to people in the community.
¡¾4¡¿What can we infer about bars nowadays?
A. Themed bars have held the market
B. Some bars have a hard time surviving.
C. They become the heart of a community
D. Measures should be taken to save them.

There is no doubt whether setting a goal is very important. By set goals you are
taking control of your life. It is having a map to guide you to where you want to head.
With a clear direction, and with certain plans, you will straightly get what you want. On the contrary, without the goal, you do not know where to go or what you want. Then your life becomes dull or meaningless just like the dead water in a muddy lake.
We find that successful people were always those having and achieving their goal.
They set goals, short-term or long-run, to help realize our dreams. Therefore, from my point of view, we should make clear what we really want it and follow our plans as many winners do.
