2.In China,as in many countries,the north-south divide runs deep.People from the north are seen as hale and hearty,while southerners are often portrayed as cunning,cultured traders.Northerners are taller than southerners.The north eats noodles,while the south eats rice-and according to new research,when it comes to personality,that difference has meant everything.
A study published Friday by a group of psychologists in the journal Science finds that China's noodle-slurping northerners are more independent,show more"analytic thought"and divorce more frequently.By contrast,the authors write,rice-eating southerners show more qualities traditionally associated with East Asian culture,including more"holistic thought"and lower divorce rates.
The reason?Cultivating rice,the authors say,is a lot harder.Picture a rice paddy,its delicate seedlings tucked in a bed of water.They require careful tending and many hours of labor-by some estimates,twice as much as wheat-as well as reliance on irrigation systems that require neighborly cooperation.As the authors write,for southerners growing rice,"strict self-reliance might have meant starvation".
Growing wheat,by contrast,the north's staple grain,is much simpler.One Chinese farming guide from the 1600s quoted in the study advised aspiring farmers that"if one is short of labor power,it is best to grow wheat."
To produce their findings,the authors evaluated the attitudes of 1,162Han Chinese students in Beijing and Liaoning in the north and in Fujian,Guangdong,Yunnan and Sichuan in the south.To control for other factors that distinguish the north and south-such as climate,dialect and contact with herding cultures-the authors also analyzed differences between various neighboring counties in five central provinces along China's rice-wheat border.
According to the authors,the influence of rice cultivation can help explain East Asia's"strangely persistent interdependence".For example,they say South Korea and Japan have remained less individualistic than Western countries,even as they've grown wealthier.
The authors aren't alone in observing the influence various crops have on shaping culture.Malcolm Gladwell in his 2008book Outliers also drew connections between a hard-working ethic (measured by a willingness to fill out long,boring questionnaires) and a historical tradition of rice cultivation in places such as South Korea and Japan,given that the farming of such crops is arguably an equally boring chore.
Title:How China's North-South Divide Has Influence on (71)Shaping Personality.
(72)Difference(s)/Distinction(s)in personality●China's northerners (73)feed(1ive)on noodles, and they are thought of as hale, hearty and taller with more (74)independenceand"analytic thought"as well as higher divorce rates
●On the contrary, the southerners prefer eating rice and have more"holistic thought"and lower divorce rates
Reasons●Planting rice needs twice more (75)1aborthan planting wheat
●Cultivating rice relies on irrigation system that requires neighbors to (76)cooperatewell
●If you are over independent, you might (77)starvein the south
●If you are (78)1acking(weak)in labor power,it is best to grow wheat in the north
The Research●The attitudes of 1,162 Han Chinese students were evaluated
●Other unrelated factors like climate, dialect and herding cultures were carefully (79)controlled
●The result shows the influence of rice cultivation can result in more cooperation and explain East Asia's"strangely persistent interdependence"
Another(80)similar(related,relevant)observationMalcolm Gladwell also found the influence crops have on culture in his 2008 book Outliers

2.Facial expressions carry meaning that is determined by situations and relationships.For example,in American culture the smile is in general an expression of pleasure.Yet it also has other uses.A woman's smile at a police officer does not carry the same meaning as the smile she gives to a young child.A smile may show love or politeness.It can also hide true feelings.we often causes confusion (困惑) across cultures.For example,many people in Russia consider smiling at strangers in public to be unusual and even improper.Yet many Americans smile freely at strangers in public places (although this is less common in big cities).Some Russians believe that Americans smile in the wrong places; frequently used to cover painful feelings,Vietnamese people may tell a sad story but end the story with a smile.
Our faces show emotions (情感),but we should not attempt to"read"people from another culture as we would"read"someone from our own culture.The fact that members of one culture do not express their emotions as openly as do members of another does not mean that they do not experience emotions.Rather,there are cultural differences in the amount of facial expressiveness permitted.For example,in public and in formal situations many Japanese do not show their emotions as freely as Americans do.When with friends,Japanese and Americans seem to show their emotions similarly.
It is difficult to generalize about Americans and facial expressiveness because of personal and cultural differences in the United States.People from certain cultural backgrounds in the United States seem to be more facially expressive than others.The key is to try not to judge people whose ways of showing emotion are different.If we judge according to our own cultural habits,we may make the mistake of"reading"the other person incorrectly.

28.What does the smile usually mean in the U.S.?B
A.Love.
B.Joy.
C.Politeness.
D.Thankfulness
29.The author mentions the smile of the Vietnamese to prove that a smile canC.
A.show friendliness to strangers
B.be used in the wrong places
C.be used to hide true feelings
D.show personal habits
30.What should we do before attempting to"read"people?D
A.Learn about their relations with others.
B.Figure out what they will do next.
C.Find out about their past experience.
D.Understand their cultural backgrounds.
31.What would be the best title for the text?D
A.Cultural Differences
B.Smiles and Relationships
C.Habits and Emotions
 D.Facial Expressiveness.

12.If you take a look at the best-selling books in the UK these days,it is almost certain that there will be a lot of autobiographies (自传) in that list.Bill Clinton,Nelson Mandela and actor Michael J Fox have all written them.An autobiography is the story of a person?s life,written by that person.It is usually a very famous person who might tell us all about their childhood,how they became famous and any other interesting things that have happened in their lives.
Traditionally,someone would write an autobiography when they were older because they had had a long,successful life.However,these days there are many magazines with stories and photos of the stars which sell very well.Reality TV shows are extremely popular and lots of people become famous very easily just from being on the TV rather than being able to sing or act well.As a result,people become famous very quickly and as soon as they are famous,a lot of money can be made from writing an autobiography,even if they are very young.
So now you can find an autobiography from almost everyone who is in the public eye.Even though we can follow the lives of the stars very closely on TV or in magazines nowadays,we maybe don?t know how they live their lives from day to day.Autobiographies often give the information we never knew about the stars.The British public are very curious to find out more so they are very eager to read autobiographies.
Not every star wants to write though.Sometimes stars employ writers to write their life stories for them.The writer will interview the stars,listen to everything they want to say,record interviews and then write books based on their words.David Beckham did this with his book My Side.
Not everyone likes to read books regularly but they might like to read about the lives of stars.Autobiographies are helping to get more British people reading books.About 100million autobiographies are sold in Britain every year.More stars depend on them for extra income and as more of these books appear in the shops,more people are sure to keep buying them.
Autobiographies, stories writt en by famous people about themselves, are popular in the UK.(要点1)But unlike traditional ones, many of today's autobiographies are about young stars who rise to fame quickly.(要点2)As they often contain information unknown before, readers are keen on reading them.(要点3)Not fond of writing, however, some celebrities hire writers to write their autobiographies.(要点4)Besides,due to autobiographies, more British people are involved in reading now.(要点5)(68 words).

19.The trouble of having to charge(充电)your smartphone for hours a day could become a thing of the past.
British scientists have created a material that replaces the screen glass for phones,i-pad and smartwatches,but uses no power----meaning they could be charged weekly.The discovery is important because more than 90percent of a device's battery power illuminates(照明)the screen.
Technology firms have focused on improving battery life.But the British experts say dealing with the main power-using may give better results.Oxford University engineer Dr Peiman Hosseini,who invented the material,told the Sunday Telegraph:"You have to charge smartwatches every night.But if you had smart glass,you could recharge it just once a week."
The invention uses electrical pulses to create displays that require no power and can be viewed even in direct sunlight.Dr Hosseini's company,Bodle Technologies,hopes to have a prototype(样机)in a year.
Battery life is seen as a major obstruction for modern computing and technology.While the power of technology and lifestyle gadgets(小器件)has improved rapidly in recent years,batteries have not kept pace.The success of smart watches,including Apple's version,is thought to depend on solving this problem because few users are willing to charge a watch every day.
Gadget firms are also desperate to solve the problem.
Apple, for example,is investigating using fuel cells to power its phones and laptops, and this year had gained a patent for a system that it claimed could power its gadget for weeks.
In 2012US energy secretary Steven Chu called for a big push to improve batteries,challenging scientists to produce a battery with five times the capacity within five years.
Aside from mobile gadgets, improving battery technology is seen as being key to the success of electric cars, which currently have a limited journey before they must stop to be recharged.

32.Who invented the new material?B
A.Energy secretary.
B.Oxford University engineer.
C.Technology firms.
D.Apple Corps.
33.What can we know about the invention?C
A.It has gained a patent.
B.It is popular with customers.
C.It is a kind of glass.
D.It uses power to charge the phones.
34.The author uses the example of Apple in para7 to showD.
A.what the key to success is
B.why Apple products are popular
C.how often batteries must be recharged
D.how gadget firms are making efforts to improve batteries
35.What can be inferred from the passage?B
A.90% of batteries will be replaced with smart glass.
B.It is likely that mobile phones will be recharged once a week.
C.Scientists are focusing on increasing the number of batteries.
D.Many users are willing to pay more for watches of Apple version.

15.Parents should ban electronic media during mealtimes and after bedtime as part of a comprehensive"family media use plan",according to new recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics."Excessive media use is associated with obesity, poor school performance, aggression and lack of sleep,"said Marjorie Hogan,co-author of the new policy.
Families should have a no-device rule during meals and after bedtime, the guidelines say.Parents should also set family rules covering the use of the Internet and cellphones, including, perhaps, which sites can be visited, and who can be called. The policy also restated(重申)the existing recommendations:Kids should limit the amount of screen time for entertainment to less than two hours per day;children younger than 2 shouldn't have any TV or Internet exposure. Also, televisions and Internet-accessible devices should be kept out of Kids'bedrooms.
Doctors say parents need to obey the family rules, too,to model healthy behavior. That, some say,may be the toughest part."If you go to any restaurant,Family 3.0 is Mom and Dad on their devices and the kids on theirs,"says Donald,a pediatrician(儿科医生)and an APP spokesman."Who is talking to each other?"
Children aged from 8-18 spent an average of 7 hours and 38 minutes a day consuming media for fun, including TV,music, video games and other content in 2015,according to a 2016 report from the Kaiser Family Foundation. The report was based on a survey of 2012 third through twelfth graders,702 of whom completed a seven-day media use diary. That was up about an hour and 17 minutes a day from five years earlier.About two-thirds of 8 to 18-year-olds said they had no rules on the amount of time they spent watching TV,playing video games or using the computer, the Kaiser report found.
Use of mobile devices by young kids has soared(飙升).A new report from Common Sense Media,a child-advocacy group based in San Francisco, found that 17% of children aged 8 and younger use mobile devices daily,up from 8% in 2011.

27.What can be inferred according to the 1st paragraph?D
A.Parents are advised to ban electronic media after mealtimes.
B."Family media use plan"is being carried out throughout America.
C.Electronic media are evil in the eyes of parents and educators.
D.Overuse of electronic media has caused many severe problems.
28.Which is Not included in the new policy?B
A.Children's screen time for entertainment should be limited.
B.Children can only play video games in their bedrooms.
C.Children can't call whoever they want to call without parents'permission.
D.Children younger than 2 should neither watch TV nor surf the Internet.
29.Why should parents themselves obey the family rules?B
A.It's beneficial to their health.
B.It's essential to parenting their kids
C.It's beneficial to their work.
D.It's essential to developing good relationship with their kids.
30.What can be the best title of the passage?C
A.Consuming Media for Fun Is a Nature of Kids
B.No use,No Worry
C.Measures Should Be Taken to stop Children's Overuse of Electronic Media
D.Electronic Devices Threaten the Relationship of Many Families.
