The end of the 2014 World Cup does not mean the end of the international competition in Brazil. A major football event which is known as RoboCup will be held in the coastal city Joao Pessoa. Teams of robots from around the world will take part in it and play the game known as soccer in the United States. The robot teams are guided by teams of human beings.

Nancy Tillman’s wonderful On the Night You Were Born is one of my favorite books. Its celebration of the uniqueness of each and every child told in lyrical language makes it the gift I choose most often for expectant or adoptive parents. I also read it regularly with my grandchildren and talk with them about how special they are.

Tillman feels that the most important message for children to receive is simply, “You are loved.” And it’s that message that is the focus of this, her newest book, Wherever You Are: My Love Will Find You. Once again, it is her turn of phrase that most fascinates me: In the green of the grass ... in the smell of the sea ... in the clouds floating by ... at the top of a tree ... in the sound crickets make at the end of the day ... “You are loved. You are loved. You are loved,” they all say. Phrases encourage children to grow, to try new things, to “march to the front” of their “own parade” and assures them that, no matter how far they go or what they do, they will be loved.

Though the words alone would convince me to buy, share and recommend this book, Tillman is also a gifted artist and her lovely work makes this book a visual treasure as well. Through the pages, a child rides hippos, splashes in the surf with elephants, plays hide and seek with rabbits, shares a trampoline (蹦床) with a kangaroo and enjoys some quiet time with a pair of pandas. My favorite drawing has the child walking away along a wide path that runs between trees covered in mist. In all of the drawings, swirls of sparkling lights wrap around the child--the love that will always be with him/her.

I’ve read On the Night You Were Born dozens of times and with every single reading, I am incredibly touched. Wherever You Are: My Love Will Find You creates the same feeling of wonder, peace and happiness in me. It’s a keep-forever book and I’m so happy to have it in my collection to share with the children I love most.

1.The purpose of this passage is to _____.

A. encourage people to buy Nancy Tillman’s books for their children

B. recommend Tillman’s new book--Wherever You Are: My Love Will Find You

C. advocate the theme of love among family members

D. Let children know they are loved and educate them to love others

2.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage? _____.

A. Nancy Tillman’s book On the Night You Were Born encourages children to try new things.

B. The most important focus of Tillman’s books is for children to know they are loved.

C. The writer considers Tillman a gifted artist for her vivid use of words and rich imagination.

D. The writer has bought and read both of Tillman’s books mentioned in this passage.

3. Pick out the true statements according to the passage. _____.

A. The words alone makes Tillman’s books the writer’s favorite.

B. Wherever You Are: My Love Will Find You is published earlier than On the Night You Were Born.

C. My favorite drawing shows the feeling of wonder with the child swirling in sparkling lights.

D. The drawings in Wherever You Are convey love with pictures involving animals.

Strange Baby-Naming Laws

Germany

Parents are banned by law from using last names and the names of objects and products as first names. A child’s first name must clearly show his or her sex, and all names must be approved by the office of vital statistics(人口统计) in the area in which the child was born.

Iceland

The country’s naming committee consults the National Register of Persons to determine if a name is acceptable. If parents prefer a name which is not on the list, they must apply for approval and pay a fee, and the name must contain only letters in the Icelandic alphabet.

New Zealand

The country’s Births, Deaths, and Marriages Registration Act of 1995 doesn’t allow parents to choose a name that “might cause offense to a reasonable person; is unreasonably long; or is, includes, or is similar to an official title or rank,” including, apparently, Adolf Hitler and Yeah Detroit—both names recently rejected.

Denmark

If Danish parents prefer a name not on the list of 7,000 preapproved baby names, they must get permission from local church and government officials. 15 to 20 percent of the 1,100 reviewed names—including creative spellings of common names, last names as first names, and unusual names—are rejected each year.

A. be on the name list without exception

B. be paid a large amount of money for

D. parents must give up babies’ names if the names are not on the list in Ireland

“Tear’ em apart!” “Kill the fool!” “Murder the referee (裁判)!”

These are common remarks one may hear at various sporting events. At the time they are made, they may seem innocent enough. But let’s not kid ourselves. They have been known to influence behavior in such a way as to lead to real bloodshed. Volumes have been written about the way words affect us. It has been shown that words having certain connotations (含义) may cause us to react in ways quite foreign to what we consider to be our usual humanistic behavior. I see the term “opponent” as one of those words. Perhaps the time has come to delete it from sports terms.

The dictionary meaning of the term “opponent” is “adversary” “enemy”; “one who opposes your interests.” Thus, when a player meets an opponent, he or she may tend to treat that opponent as an enemy. At such times, winning may dominate one’s intellect, and every action, no matter how gross, may be considered justifiable. I recall an incident in a handball game when a referee refused a player’s request for a time out for a glove change because he did not consider them wet enough. The player proceeded to rub his gloves across his wet T-shirt and then exclaimed. “Are they wet enough now?”

In the heat of battle, players have been observed to throw themselves across the court without considering the consequences that such a move might have on anyone in their way. I have also witnessed a player reacting to his opponent’s international and illegal blocking by deliberately hitting him with the ball as hard as he could during the course of play. Off the court, they are good friends. Does that make any sense? It certainly gives proof of a court attitude which departs from normal behavior.

Therefore, I believe it is time we elevated (提升) the game to the level where it belongs there by setting an example to the rest of the sporting world. Replacing the term “opponent” with “associate” could be an ideal way to start.

The dictionary meaning of the term “associate” is “colleague”; “friend”; “companion.” Reflect a moment! You may soon see and possibly feel the difference in your reaction to the term “associate” rather than “opponent.”

2.Harsh words are spoken during games because the players ________.

A. are too eager to win

B. are usually short-tempered and easily offended

C. cannot afford to be polite in fierce competition

D. treat their rivals as enemies

3.What did the handball player do when he was not allowed a time out to change his gloves?

A. He refused to continue the game.

B. He angrily hit the referee with a ball.

C. He claimed that the referee was unfair.

D. He wet his gloves by rubbing them across his T-shirt.

4.According to the passage, players, in a game, may ________.

A. deliberately throw the ball at anyone illegally blocking their way

B. keep on screaming and shouting throughout the game

C. lie down on the ground as an act of protest

D. kick the ball across the court with force

A. calling on players to use clean language on the court

B. raising the referee’s sense of responsibility

C. changing the attitude of players on the sports field

D. regulating the relationship between players and referees

The term “résumé” means a document describing one’s educational qualifications and professional experience. However, guidelines(指南) for preparing a global résumé are constantly changing. The best advice is to find out what is appropriate regarding the company culture, the country culture, and the culture of the person making the hiring decision. The following list is a good place to start.

·In many countries, it is standard procedure to attach a photo or have your photo printed on your résumé. Do not attach a photograph to your résumé if you are sending it to the United States, though.

·Educational requirements differ from country to country. In most cases of “cross-border” job hunting, just stating the title of your degree will not be enough. Provide the reader with details about your studies and any related experience.

·Pay attention to the résumé format(格式) you use—chronological(时间的) or reverse-chronological order. If you find no specific guidelines, the general preference is for the reverse-chronological format, which means listing your current or most recent experience first.

·The level of computer technology and accessibility to the Internet varies from country to country. Even if a company or individual lists an e-mail address, there is no guarantee that they will actually receive your email. Send a paper copy of your résumé, as well as the emailed copy, just to make sure that it is received.

·If you are writing your résumé in English, find out if the receiver uses British English or American English because there are variations between the two versions.

·Although English is widely accepted today as being the universal language of business, most multinational companies will expect you to speak the language of one of the countries in which they do business, in addition to English. Have your résumé prepared in both languages, and be ready for your interview to be conducted in both languages. Most companies will want to see and hear proof of your language skills.

·Be aware that paper sizes are different in different countries. The United States standard is 8? by 11 inches, while the European A4 standard is 21 by 29.7 centimeters. When you send your résumé by email, reformat it to the receiver’s standard. Otherwise, when it is printed out, half of your material may be missing!

1.The passage is most probably intended for _____.

A. job hunters that seek careers abroad

B. companies that do international business

C. people that are employed by companies overseas

D. graduates that can speak over one foreign language

2.Which of the following is always advisable when a global résumé is prepared according to the passage?

A. Write it in American English.

B. Prepare it in more than two languages.

C. Attach or print your photo on it.

D. Send both a paper and an emailed copy.

3.From the passage, we learn that _____.

A. we can’t list the oldest experience first in a résumé

B. Asian countries may have the same standard paper size

C. a résumé can help us know about a person’s personality

D. a person’s educational background should be included in a résumé

4.The passage mainly wants to tell us that a global résumé should _____.

A. be highly professional

B. be especially informative

C. be culturally proper

D. be completely chronological
