Complete the following sentence:“You go to the library to check out ...?” The obvious answer is “books”.But a harder question might be, “What do we mean by ‘books’?” Nowadays, electronic books, or “e?books”, have become more and more popular in American society.

The biggest online bookseller Amazon, for example, recently announced that less than four years after introducing them to its catalog, it is now selling more electronic versions of its book titles than printed ones.

Last week, Pew Internet Project released a survey about the use of e?books by library customers. It found that 12% of Americans aged 16 and older who read e?books say they had borrowed at least one from a library within the past year. But the survey found that the broader public, including 58% of those who have library cards and 53% of people who own electronic book readers, are not aware that they can find and check out e?books from public libraries, even though three quarters of the libraries offer that service.

Pew Internet Project director Lee Rainie noted that e?book borrowing is becoming more popular at the same time that publishers, who are selling plenty of e?books and fewer hard?copy editions, are worried that free e?book check?outs at the library will hurt sales. In February, for example, the big publisher Penguin Books stopped supplying new e?books and audio books to libraries.Penguin just reached an agreement to resume supplying one big library system in New York City but not until six months after new titles are released. That way, those who want the latest books will have to buy them.

So things are a little murky (阴暗的) in the library world when it comes to electronic books.More and more customers want them, but publishers are giving the libraries a hard time about offering them.Demand is not the problem.Supply may soon be.

1.What is the function of the two questions in the first paragraph?

A. To introduce the topic of the passage.

B. To stress the popularity of e?books.

C. To show what the author cares about.

D. To remind us of the change at the library.

2.According to Paragraph 2, what can we know about Amazon?

A. It has sold e?books for five years.

B. Its e?books are cheaper than printed books.

C. It has the best e?books among all libraries.

D. Its e?books sell better than printed books.

3.We know from the survey done by Pew Internet Project that ________.

A. few library customers know how to read e?books

B. the promotional effort at e?book readers is not big enough

C. library customers should be reminded about the e?book service

D. more library cards should be offered to readers free of charge

4.Why did Penguin Books NOT supply new e?books to libraries?

A. Because they are not allowed to offer e?books.

B. Because they wanted to increase the sales of printed books.

C. Because they didn't want their e?books to be copied.

D. Because their products were not welcomed there.

Stressed? It is shown in recent research that walking or cycling to work calms you down (traveling by bus or train is also better than driving).

Walking to work reduces stress and improves brain power, researchers say. Adults who stopped driving the car and started walking or cycling became calmer and found it easier to concentrate. A study of 18,000 Britons found that going to work by train or bus improved their well?being compared with driving.

The study, published in the journal Preventive Medicine, also found that the longer people spent walking or cycling, the happier or less stressed they were. However, stress levels and inability to concentrate worsened if they spent more time in the car.

Lead researcher Adam Martin, from the University of East Anglia's Norwich Medical School, said that despite the crowds and disruption, walking to bus stops or stations and being able to relax on the journey “cheer people up”. Two thirds drive to work, 18 percent use public transport, 11 percent walk and 3 percent cycle.

A research earlier this year found that commuters (乘公共车辆往返者) had small but statistically significant lower scores on all measures of well?being. The worst effects were witnessed in those whose journeys last between 61 and 90 minutes. But when commuting time reaches three hours or more, the negative effects disappear, the report said.

“The effects of commuting on personal well?being are the greatest for anxiety and happiness, suggesting that commuting affects day?to?day emotions more than overall evaluations of satisfaction with life or the sense that daily activities are worthwhile,” the report stated.

Dr Daniel Newman, from Cardiff University's Sustainable Places Research Institute, said, “This report says that many of us, who spend mornings and evenings sitting in traffic jam, already know: commuting can be a chore.”

1.What can be learned from Paragraph 1?

A.Driving for long drives people crazy.

B.Feeling stressed can be predicted.

C.Walking to work helps reduce stress.

D.Travelling by bus makes people excited.

2.Walking to work is something ________.

A.preferred by most people

B.easier to perform in daily life

C.making people more creative

D.beneficial to the sense of happiness

3.What does the underlined word “chore” probably mean?

A.Tiresome task.

B.Amazing challenge.

C.Meaningless thing.

D.Financial trouble.

4.What type of writing is this text?

A.A scientific report.

B.A transportation guide.

C.A policy announcement.

D.A new lifestyle introduction.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

Scientists recently found three animal species living two miles below the surface of the Mediterranean Sea, where the super-salty waters don’t have oxygen(氧). They’re multicellular(多细胞的), which means their bodies have many cells. They each are as small as a large grain of sand. But they are animals.

The most exciting thing about these creatures, say the scientists, is that they obviously don’t need oxygen to live. What biologists know about life so far is that only single-celled living things can live in places that have no oxygen, and that multicellular organisms(有机物) can visit these places, but not live there. These newly found creatures could change that idea.

Finding animals down there was so surprising that the scientists couldn’t believe it. At first, “we thought they were dead bodies,” Roberto Danovaro, a scientist at the Polytechnic University of Marche in Ancona, Italy, told Science News. To find out whether the animals could actually live there Danovaro and his colleagues brought up more samples(样本) from the ocean floor. Studying the animals in the new samples showed that they appeared to be alive.

The researchers did more tests, and found that some of the animals had eggs—which suggests they were reproducing(繁殖). Also in the samples were old skins, suggesting that the animals had lived there long enough to grow. Finally, pictures taken showed that the insides of the animals appear to be adapted to live in an environment that has no oxygen.

These clues suggest the animals don’t need oxygen, but the evidence(证据) is indirect, which means that scientists still have not observed how the animals live without oxygen. This means more studies are needed, but the scientists think they’re on the right track. And if they’re right, biologists will need to rethink what they know about where animals live.

1.What excited the scientists most is that ______.

A.they found three animal species visit the salty water under the Mediterranean Sea

B.single-celled animals can live in super-salty waters

C.the tiny animals have many cells

D.three kinds of animals can live in places that have no oxygen

2.The underlined phrase in Paragraph 2 means the scientists could think _____.

A.only single-celled creatures don’t need oxygen to live

B.multicellular animals can visit the super-salty waters

C.the newly found creatures can’t live in the super-salty waters

D.multicellular animals also can live without oxygen besides single-celled ones

3.Which of the following CAN’T be used to prove the newly found creatures can live in super-salty waters?

A.Their dead bodies are found there.

B.Some in the samples have eggs.

C.Some old skins are found in the samples.

D.The pictures of their insides have been taken.

4.More studies are needed to prove_____.

A.where single-celled animals can live

B.how the newly found animals live without oxygen

C.whether the multicellular creatures can live underwater

D.why the super-salty waters have no oxygen

Does stress cause gray hair? Many people believe that tension and stress can cause your hair to lose its color. In fact,it is an_old_wives’_tale that being upset all the time can result in premature graying. Here is a closer look at this situation and why some believe that this old wives’ tale could be true.

As one ages, the hairs on the head also age.In fact, just about everything on the human body begins to show signs of wear and tear after a while. The joints wear and become stiff and skin wears and becomes wrinkled.Hairs on the head grow and eventually die. They are replaced, but in the process something else happens.

When new hairs are replaced, the color or pigment (色素) is also added to them. However,as one ages, this pigment becomes less and less available. At first, hairs will have a limited amount of pigment and they will appear to be grayish in color. In time, they will lose all of their pigment and will be white. Many things are known to cause graying, and genetics is a very powerful factor. If one of your parents turns gray at an early age, there is a good chance that you will too. Some people begin the graying process in high school, while others may be over the age of forty.

Constant worry and tension can have many harmful effects on the human body.It is a known fact that stressful times can cause one to suffer hair loss.It would make sense that if it can cause these problems, perhaps it also may contribute to graying. However, there is no sound evidence to support this.

On the other hand, many medical professionals believe that there may be a link between graying and a constant state of anxiety or tension.Does stress cause gray hair? There is no scientific evidence to support the theory, but it is best to avoid stressful situations.

1.The underlined phrase in the first paragraph most probably means ________.

A.clever remarks B.silly remarks

C.exciting remarks D.disappointed remarks

2.The second paragraph mainly tells us ________.

A.every part of body is replaced with age

B.hairs will grow weak but not die

C.skin becomes wrinkled with age

D.every part of body ages with age

3.What might play the most important role in the graying process?

A.Genetics and the amount of sleeping time.

B.The amount of food people eat and living environment.

C.The amount of pigment and genetics.

D.Genetics and the amount of water people drink

4.According to the passage, continuous pressure may result in ________.

A.a person’s fatness B.a person’s fitness

C.a person’s weight loss D.a person’s hair loss

5.From the passage we can infer that ________.

A.stress causing gray hair is still in question

B.gray hair has nothing to do with tension

C.stressful situations can be of benefit

D.sound evidence has been found
