Do you ever wonder whether we can foresee (预见) the future? I once read a story 1 almost 2 me believe that at least some people have premonitions (预感) about future events.

A man who lived on his own 3 a small flat was sitting 4 one evening when he suddenly smelled smoke coming 5 somewhere in the flat. He immediately 6 and went to the kitchen 7 he thought he 8 something on the gas 9 . There was certainly a smell of smoke, 10 there was nothing burning. So then he 11 in the hall and the bedroom and the bathroom, but he 12 couldn't find anything burning. When he went outside the flat, there was no smell of burning 13 , so, thinking it must be his imagination, he went 14 to his reading rather mystified (迷惑不解) .

A month later he returned 15 a business trip to find firemen 16 a fire in his flat. They told him that 17 electric wires had short-circuited (短路) and 18 the fire and that he should have had the flat rewired (重装电线) a long time ago. So was it 19 that the wires had started smoldering (慢燃) a month before ( when he smelled smoke ) , 20 had he in fact “seen into the future”.
