Millions of people pass through the gates of Disney’s entertainment parks in California, Florida and Japan each year. What makes these place an almost universal attraction? What makes foreign kings and queens and other important people want to visit these Disney parks? Well, one reason is the way they’re treated once they get there. The people at Disney go out of their way to serve their “guests”, as they prefer to call them, and to see that they enjoy themselves.

All new employees, from vice presidents to part-time workers, begin their employment by attending Disney University and taking “Traditions(传统)I”. Here, they learn about the company’s history, how it is managed, and why it is successful. They are shown how each department relates to the whole. All employees are shown how their part is important in making the park a success.

After passing “Traditions I”, the employees go on to do more specialized training for their specific(具体的)jobs. No detail(细节)is missed. A simple job like taking tickets requires four eight-hour days of training. When one ticket taker was asked why it took so much training for such a simple, ordinary job, he replied, “What happens if someone wants to know where the restrooms are, when the parade starts or what bus to take back to the campgrounds?…We need to know the answers or where to get them quickly. Our constant aim is to help our guests enjoy the party.”

Even Disney’s managers get involved in the daily management of the park. Every year, the mangers leave their desks and business suits and put on special service clothes. For a full week, the bosses sell hot dogs or ice cream, take tickets or drive the monorail(单轨车), and take up any of the 100 jobs that make the entertainment park come alive. The managers agree that this week help them to see the company’s goals more clearly.

All these efforts to serve the public well have made Walt Disney Productions famous. Disney is considered by many as the best mass service provider in America or the world. As one longtime business observer once said, “How Disney treats people, communicates with them, rewards them , is in my view the very reason for his fifty years of success… I have watched, very carefully and with great respect and admiration, the theory and practice of selling satisfaction and serving millions of people on a daily basis, successfully. It is what Disney does best.”

Certain people make you feel comfortable when they are around. You spend an hour with them and feel as if you’ve known them half your life. These people have something in common. And once you know what it is, we can try to do it ourselves.

How is it done? Here are several skills that good talkers have. If you follow the skills, they will help you to put people at their ease, and make friends with them quickly.

First of all, good talkers have asked questions. Almost anyone, no matter how shy he is, will answer a question. One well-known businesswoman says, “At business lunches, I always ask people what they did that morning. It’s a common question, but it will get things going.” From there you can move on to other matters ----sometimes to really personal questions. And how he answers will let you know how far you can go.

Second, once good talkers have asked questions, they listen for the answers. This point seems clear, but it isn’t. Your question should have a point and help to tell what sort of person you are talking to. And to find out, you really have to listen carefully and attentively.

Real listening at least means some things. First it means not to change the subject of conversation. If someone sticks to one topic, you can take it as a fact that he is really interested in it. Real listening also means not just listening to words, but to the tone (语调)of voice. If the voice sounds dull, then it’s time for you to change the subject.

Finally, good talkers know well how to deal with the occasion of parting. If you’re saying goodbye, you may give him a firm shakehand and say, “I’ve really enjoyed meeting you.” If you want to see that person again, don’t keep it a secret. Let people know what you feel, and they may walk away feeling as if they’ve known you half their lives.

1.You’ll like to stay with some people____.

A. who have something in common with you

B. when you get into real trouble

C. with whom you feel it easy to get along well

D. from whom you can get necessary and timely help

2.After asking somebody a question, you should____.

A. make it clear what is fit to ask next

B. wait quietly for his answers

C. go on to ask more questions

D. change the subject to another one

3.If you want to see that person again,____ when parting.

A. let him know what you feel

B. giving them a firm shakehand

C. asking proper questions and being a good listener

D. keeping talking to others to them in the conversation

Many parents who welcome the idea of turning off the TV and spending more time with the family are still worried that without TV they would be too often on call as entertainers(娱乐者) for their children. They remember thinking up all sorts of things to do when they were children. But their own children seem different, less good at finding things to pass the time, somehow. When there’s nothing to do, these parents notice regretfully that their children seem unable to come up with anything to do besides turning on the TV.?

One father, for example, says, “When I was young, we were always thinking up things to do, projects and games. We certainly never complained in an angry way to our parents, ‘I have nothing to do”.He compares this with his own children today: “They are simply lazy.If someone doesn’t play with them, they’ll happily sit there watching TV all day.”

There is one word for this father’s disappointment: unfair. It is as if he were disappointed in them for not reading Greek though they have never studied the language. He feels his children’s lack of inventiveness a great pity, as if the ability to play were something born that his children are missing. In fact, the tendency(倾向) to play is built into the human species, but the actual ability to play—to imagine, to invent in a playful way, and the ability to gain satisfaction after successful effort from it—these are skills that have to be learned and developed.

Such disappointment, however, is not only unjust, it is also destructive(毁灭性的).Sensing their parents’ disappointment, children come to believe that they are, indeed, lacking something, and that this makes them less worthy of admiration and respect.Giving children the chance to develop new things to enjoy themselves, to enrich their knowledge and experience and discover the pleasure of doing things on their own is, on the other hand, a way to help children develop a confident(自信)feeling about themselves as able and interesting people.

1.Many people think that, instead of watching a lot of TV, their children should_______.

A.think up things to enjoy themselves       B.find chances to talk with parents

C.enjoy themselves outdoors      D.sit silently studying Greek

2.Fathers often blame their children for not being able to play by themselves. This is unfair because________.

A.they do not lack the ability to play

B.they have not been given the opportunities to learn and develop their ability

C.the children are too young to do that

D.the children are not really lazy, but there’s nothing for them to do

3.When parents show continuous disappointment in their children, the children will________.

       A.be more disappointed

       B.refuse to learn new things

C.discover the pleasures of doing things on their own

       D.lose their confidence and respectability

4.What is the author’s main idea?

A.Parents should give children more help on how to be inventive.

B.Turning off the TV will help us solve a lot of family problems.

C.It’s not right for parents and children to blame(抱怨) each other.

D.Today’s children are becoming less able and independent than before.

Some expressions have made a jump from sports events to everyday life. One such expression is fall guy. A fall guy is the person who someone decides will be the loser or victim.

The first fall guys were men who wrestled for money. At the end of the 19th century, wrestling was a very popular sport in the United States. Hallmark arrived in my hometown of Calcutta, India when I was 16. On Valentine’s Day(情人节), I waited in line with many other teenagers just for a chance to get into the store. I remember wishing two things. One of them is that the good-looking boy whom I could see through the store window was picking out a gift for me. Unfortunately, Valentine’s Day passed and I received nothing but a lecture from my father on how Western capitalism(资本主义) was ruining your culture.

The next Valentine’s Day, I still didn’t have a boyfriend, but I did receive a greeting card from a secret admirer. I can’t remember what it exactly said inside the card, but it hardly mattered. I know I’m not the only one who’s had the blues because of being single on Valentine’s Day.

It’s not just on Valentine’s Day that I’m reminded of these feelings. One night, my friend and I were at the subway station in New York City waiting for the local to arrive. The station was mostly full of college students, and later an older couple walked in. Just at that moment, a street musician started playing She’s Only a Woman to Me. The couple began dancing around the station and lost in their own world. On the train, I found myself recalling the time when I was with a date at the subway station, and there he picked me up in his arms like I was a ballerina(芭蕾舞女演员).

My view of romance has changed from when I was 16 in Calcutta to now, 23, and living in Manhattan. This year, I won’t focus all my romantic expectations on one particular day. I’ll spend Valentine’s Day with friends in New York City. But I won’t try to hide somewhere or turn off my cellphone. Instead, I’ll help my coupled-up friends pack for their weekend trips to Rome.
