The other day when I was passing a clothing store, I fell in love with a skirt. I knew it would suit me best at first sight. But when I looked at the price tag (标签), I knew I had to give it up.

The love for beautiful clothes has been planted in my heart the day when I was born to be a woman. Several years ago I read an article in a magazine. The article stated that when a woman is at her best time, she is usually poor or tasteless, so she can’t get the right clothes; when she can afford to buy the clothes she likes, she often finds that they do not suit her anymore.

On the way home, I was quite disturbed by such thoughts. It was just a pity, like many other pities. I thought to myself this way. But when I was about to enter the building where I was living, I saw the big mirror placed in the entrance. I saw a girl in it who was in cheap but cleanly washed sweater and jeans. She was rather young, healthy and energetic. For quite a while I was touched by what I had seen in the mirror.

Then I almost forgot the tale: A person without shoes cried until he saw a man without feet. Being young without good clothes is like the person without shoes. I should have felt grateful that I haven’t lost my feet.

1.How did the author feel when she decided not to buy the skirt?

A. Embarrassed. B. Wise.

C. Relieved. D. Regretful.

2.The underlined word “She” in Paragraph 3 refers to ________.

A. the author’s friend B. the author

C. the author’s roommate D. a stranger

3.Why was the author touched by what she saw in the mirror?

A. She didn’t feel at ease when looking into a mirror.

B. She was reminded of her devotion to beauty.

C. She came to realize what she really possessed.

D. She never thought over the other side of a person.

4.We can learn from the text that the author considered her love for beautiful clothes as ________.

A. natural B. funny C. silly D. simple

While you are online there are plenty of perfectly legal sites where you can listen to music for free. This gives you the chance to listen to music before buying it, discover new music, and create great online playlists that you can share with others.

The Sixty One

The Sixty One is devoted to showcasing obscure or unknown artists of all genres. There’s a range of musical styles from classical to rock and roll, folk to jazz, and everything in between. You can find fantastic music that you never would have heard of otherwise.

Pow Wow

Pow Wows are the Native American people’s way of meeting together, to join in dancing, singing, visiting, renewing old friendships, and making new ones. This is a time method to renew Native American culture and preserve the rich heritage of American Indians. PowWows.com has 2 online radio stations that play Native American Music 24/7 free! Here you can listen to your favorite artists and drum groups on your computer or mobile device and add your music to our station.

Playlist

The worst part: Due to licensing laws, many of the songs on Playlist are now restricted to certain countries. So unless you live inside the US, it is likely that you might not be able to find all of your favorite songs.

Pandora

Pandora is an intelligent Internet radio site. Basically, as you listen, you can give each song a thumbs up or thumbs down. You can create your own radio station that only plays music you like. The best part: It listens to your opinion, so that after a while it’s only playing music you like, but the list is always changing and expanding.

My Space

Combine a major social networking site with thousands of artists around the world. Each musician has their own page, which normally has a playlist of several of their songs. But it has a huge range of musicians ranging from huge stars to the up-and-coming, and you can listen to the music and interact with the rest of the page.

Philip Pullman spent a great deal of his childhood traveling abroad because both his father and stepfather were pilots in the Royal Air Force(皇家空军). As a child, he went on several long ocean voyages, and he lived in Africa and in Australia. “Before I was 11 I had been to eight different schools.”

“In Australia, I made a great discovery. TV hadn’t reached Australia yet, but everyone listened to the radio. I remember listening to gangster serials(黑帮剧), and cowboy serials, and best of all—Superman! When I first saw a superman comic(连环漫画), it changed my life. I’d been reading books for a long time, but I’d never known comics before. Soon afterwards, I discovered Batman, too, whom I loved even more.”

Pullman started writing his first novel the day after he had finished his final exams at Oxford University. “I discovered after about an hour that it was much harder than I’d expected. It still is! I found that the amount I could write comfortably every day was about three pages, so that’s what I’ve done ever since.”

Before he became a full-time writer, Pullman had been teaching for many years. “What I enjoyed most during that time was telling stories over and over, until I knew them as well as I knew my own life.” He had always loved telling stories—as a schoolboy he had entertained his friends by reading stories to them, or by making up his own.

One day he got a letter that had arrived at his door even though the writer of the letter didn’t know his address. The envelope(信封) just said, “Philip Pullman, The Storyteller, Oxford.”

A. He was a pilot in the Royal Air Force.

B. He went to eight different schools in Africa.

2.The discovery mentioned in Paragraph 2 refers to ________.

A. the fact that there was no TV in Australia

C. the popularity of cowboy serials

D. the fact that everyone listened to the radio

3.Receiving the letter, Pullman might feel very ______.

A. happyB. angryC. calmD. worried

4.What is mainly described in the text?
