此处A. imagine 想象;B. practice践行、做;C. devote奉献;D. dream梦想。

A. work out 解出;B. figure out想出;C. make out理解,辨明;D. find out发现。

A. when 当……的时候;B. why 为什么;C. whether 是否;D. that结果。

A. clever聪明的;B. tired 劳累的;C. lazy 懒惰的;D. poor穷的。

A. down低落;B. well 健康的;C. upset 难过的;D. disappointed失望的。

A. driving 驾驶;B. running跑;C. swimming 游泳;D. walking步行。从空前的refuel(加油)可知作者是开车的。

A. outside在外面;B. away离开;C. off 远离;D. inside在里面。

A. believed相信;B. explained解释;C. shouted大喊;D. chatted聊天。

A. exactly准确地;B. surprisingly吃惊地;C. carelessly粗心地;D. unluckily不幸地。

A.interest兴趣;B.kindess友善;C.shame 羞耻;D.pity遗憾。

A.hungry饥饿的;B.refreshed精神振作的;C.crazy疯狂的;D.angry气氛的。

A.came across偶然发现;B.dropped off落下;C.called on号召;D.looked for寻找。

The first time I saw Suzy Khan, I knew I had to help her. She was really small for her age of 12. The boy in my class often about her and laughed their heads off. She would open a book, pretending to read, with tears dropping on the open page.

All I knew was that she was an orphan (孤儿) from Africa. She had just been adopted by a family in town who that the best way for her to learn American ways of life was to be with American kids. I looked down at this girl and promised myself that somehow I would help her.

But how could I help her in with us? There had to be a .

Could you help me, Suzy?”

On the day of the talent show, Suzy’s were everywhere ---- all over the hall and all over the school, each one different.

“And finally,” said Mr. Brown, the schoolmaster, at the end of the show, “we have a (n) award. I’m sure you’ve all noticed the wonderful posters.” Everyone nodded. “One of our own students them.”

I could hear everyone whispering. “Who in our school could draw well?”

Mr. Brown waited a while before saying, “ this student worked so hard on the posters, she deserves a ,too. Our mystery(神秘) artist is our new student ---- Suzy Khan!”

Mr. Brown thanked her for all the wonderful posters and gave her a professional artist’s set. “Thank you,” she cried.

I , at that time when I was looking at her excited face, she’d probably never anything in her whole life.

Everyone started to their hands. Suzy Khan gave them a shy smile and the applause was deafening. I knew then Suzy was going to be all right.

Until just a few years ago,we doctors believed that the brain stopped making new neural(神经系统的)connections (meaning that your memory began to get worse)when the body stopped developing, usually in your early 20s. And we knew that, like any other body part, neurons weaken as we age. Loss of brain function due to neural breakdown was assumed to be a normal, unavoidable part of aging.

It turns out that we were wrong. In the past few years,it has been discovered that you can,in fact, make new neurons starting in your 20s and continuing well into old age. You can literally rewire the brain with new parts as the older parts wear out. How?Simple:Keep learning. Just as your body can pack on and condition new muscle, your brain can rebuild used-up neurons.

How strong is the evidence for this?Strong enough that a $200 million industry devoted to brain boosting software (products like Brain Age,MindFit,and Lumosity that supposedly improve your memory function)has sprung up out of nowhere. All“mental fitness”means are keeping your memory intact(everything from phone numbers to how to throw a football). So what can you do to stay smart?

Keep blood pressure down. People with high blood pressure are more likely to develop cognitive impairment later in life.

Eat more vitamins. Like E(in nuts and sunflower seeds),B6 and B12(beef,tuna),and folic acid(leafy greens, citrus, berries),which help keep your brain’s chemistry in balance.

Exercise your brain. This is the best way to rebuild and strengthen those precious neurons. Learn to play chess or the guitar. When you’re at a stoplight, try to recall the starting lineup of the 1983 Celtics. See a movie that doesn’t feature Ben Stiller. Or read, like,a book.

You may think that light pollution isn’t something extraordinarily important. You may believe that every other type of pollution has a larger impact on the environment than light pollution does. But light pollution is serious.

Light pollution, or “sky glow”, is the glow(亮光) you can see at night above cities and towns. Light pollution is a problem that has been accompanying man ever since he started his first fire some 15,000 years ago. Light pollution is the light(散射光) that comes from streetlights, buildings, parking lots and any other source of light that is reflected or directed into the atmosphere.

Urban light pollution means that one-fifth of the world’s population can no longer see the Milky Way(银河) with the naked eye(肉眼). Many city kids, even if they did look through the orange smog above their heads, would probably see only a handful of stars. We have lost our view of the stars, and we have mucked up our night-time environment as well. Astronomers are calling for the dark places on Earth to be preserved as national parks.

Lots of people find the ever-brightening night annoying, and animals that are programmed to prefer the dark may avoid a brightened habitat. Sea turtles can get lost searching for a beach to lay eggs, and their hatchlings(孵化的幼仔)may confuse over-lit beachfront resorts(度假胜地) for the ocean horizon, wasting precious energy needed to find the sea and escape predators(食肉动物). Because their necks aren’t yet long enough to see things far away, baby turtles rely on the mirror image of the moon to guide them to the sea, to begin their new life. A car may even hit a particular turtle, which was thinking the light from a nearby city was moonlight reflecting off the ocean waves. Birds that live in and around cities can die because of sky glow, too. The bright lights can blind them, leading to countless collisions with buildings and other tall structures.

Reducing light pollution is not difficult.Light pollution is the easiest type of pollution to end. people can help reduce much sky glow by using lighting only when necessary. The stars above us are priceless heritage— for not only for astronomers but for all humans. More of our children should be able to look up at night and see the Milk Way is not just a candy bar.

3.Beacuse of light pollution, the sea turtles hatchlings may___

A.find the sea easily

B.cscape predaton

C.be misled by bright lights from beachfront resorts

D.find the way to the sea with the help of bright lights

4.The author mentions the Milk Way in the last paragraph to show that_________.
