10.Alan Tong was the worst driver in town.He had an accident of some kind almost every week.
Alan lived with his mother. His mother was always worried about him.Every day she worried that police would appear to arrest him. This wasn't a foolish worry because they usually visited Alan's house about once a week to send a speeding ticket or to serve him notice to appear in court(法庭).
Most of his accidents were caused by his carelessness. He drove through red lights. He turned left or drove at night without proper lights. He overtook other cars on hills. In short, there wasn't a traffic rule that Alan had not broken, and he had had so many accidents that it was a surprise that he was still alive. But luckily for Alan,he had never hurt anyone in his accidents or even gone to the hospital.

One day Alan was working in the garage, painting his car when his mother walked in."What are you doing?"his mother asked.
"Painting my car,"Alan replied.
"I can see that,"his mother said,"but why are you painting one side of the car red and the other side blue?""Because every time I have to go to court for a traffic crime, there are always two witnesses (目击证人)."What color was the car?"the judge always asks, and the two witnesses always give the same answer.Well,in the future, one witness will say it was blue.Mr.Tsui will then say to the judge,"Your honor, the witnesses cannot even agree on th e color of the car involved in the accident."And the judge will have to dismiss the case against me.

18.Half a year before graduation from college,my son David began to seek a job.Due to the financial crisis, the competition was ever-fierce.My son targeted a company that was located in a coastal city.It was intended to employ only one person among more than twenty candidates,I said to David,"You should not harbor too much hope for fear that you would feel terribly disappointed when you fail."He said to me,"I am not afraid of disappointment. As long as I try, there will always be hope!"
Three young men could enter the final round, which would later decide one person to be employed.Everything seemed to go quite well and David entered the final round in a week.
Unexpectedly, the interview was unbelievably simple, during which the interviewer only chatted with them for a while. The interview strategies my son prepared were not useful at all.The interviewer said the company would inform them of the result in 3 days.On the morning of the third day,David received the text from the company that he was not employed.David felt disappointed.
In nightfall that day,David suddenly told me excitedly on phone that he had been employed.Greatly surprised,I asked him,"What's the whole matter?"David told me that he received another text saying that he was employed.David felt very confused about it.Later he found out the first text sent to him was also part of the test in the interview.Three men received the same text this morning and only David's reply was satisfying to the company.I asked my son,"How did all of your reply?"My son said,"One did not reply. The other said‘Goodbye'and I said‘Thank you'."
Only then did I know that my son's"hope"came in that way. That is,when you feel disappointed,do not forget to say"Thank you"to the one who disappoints you.Actually,it is a piece of cake to say"Thank you".Saying"Thank you"shows respect for others'work and demonstrates your grand generosity. Therefore, while under the same condition, you will get the upper hand in terms of opportunities compared with others!

5.How do people traditionally manufacture (制造) things? They usually start with a sheet of metal, wood or other material and cut, drill (钻) and shave it to create a desired shape.Sometimes, they use a mold (模具) made of metal or sand, pour liquid plastic or metal into it and let it cool to create a solid part.
Now,a completely different method is gaining popularity.
On Oct.9,2013,London Science Museum kicked off its new exhibition,3-D:Printing the Future, with over 600 3-D printed objects on display, including space probes (探测器),toy dolls and even human organs-basically any product you can think of,reported Live Science.
You might find it hard to believe that an object can actually be"printed out"like a picture. But it is not that hard to understand how it works.Just as a traditional printer sprays (喷洒) ink onto paper line by line, modern 3-D printers spread material onto a surface layer by layer, from the bottom to the top, gradually building up a shape.
Instead of ink,the materials the 3-D printer uses are mainly plastic, resin (树脂) and certain metals. The thinner each layer is-from a millimeter to less than the width of a hair-the smoother and finer the object will be.And objects always come out in one piece, sparing you the trouble of putting different parts together afterward.
For example,10 years ago a desktop 3-D printer might have cost£20,000 (200,000 yuan),while now it costs only about£1,000,according to the BBC.In fact,3-D printers have been around for some time, but until recently they hadn't been very popular since few people could afford them.Last year, though, saw a big decrease in the price of 3-D printers.
However,as 3-D printing technology becomes more commonplace,it may trigger certain problems. One of them is piracy (盗版)."Once you can download a coffee maker,or print out a new set of kitchen utensils (餐具) on your personal 3-D printer, who will visit a retail (零售的) store again?"an expert on 3-D printing told Forbes News.
Even more frightening, the world's first 3-D printed gun was successfully fired in the US in May of this year, which means that 3-D printing could potentially give more people access to weapons.
64.According to the article,in the future,3-D printing technology will probablyA.
A.change the way people make products
B.be applied as widely in our daily lives as computers
C.forbid many countries to make purchases of weapons
D.take the place of normal printers and save lots of energy
65.What was the big event that happened in the 3-D printing industry last year?D
A.Over 600 3-D printed objects were on display in an exhibition.
B.3-D printing technology came to be used in various fields.
C.Th e world's first 3-D printed gun was successfully made.
D.The 3-D printer became more affordable for consumers.
66.What is the author's attitude toward 3-D printing technology?B
A.Amused.B.Objective.C.Supportive.D.Negative.

2.Wrong Reasons for Going to College
A college education can be priceless.(16)GIf any of these following factors had a big influence on your decision,you're probably right to second-guess yourself.
◆Because someone else expects it from you.
Perhaps you come from a family where everyone goes to college.Or maybe,you're the kid that everyone is proud to believe will be the first to get there.(17)E.It's become so much a part of the air you breathe that you've never stopped to consider whether you want to go or whether you're ready to go.
◆Because all your friends are going.
In only a few weeks'time,the whole friend group will be scattered to a half dozen different colleges in a half dozen different places.(18)BFriends would wonder what's wrong with you.Some would take it as a betrayal of the dreams you've dreamed together and the plans you've made.
◆(19)C
It's been tough to find even a summer job.You don't have an alternative plan.Everyone else is doing it (see above).You think you might as well go to school.That is the lamest of reasons to spend $20,000or more in the next year.
◆Because you are afraid you'll regret it if you don't go.
Your uncle tells you that his one regret in life is that he didn't go to college.Others tell you that they could have gone so much farther in their career if only they had a college education.(20)F So this is not a persuasive reason for you to go to college.

A That's much too fine.
B Not to go would be set yourself apart.
C Because you don't know what else to do.
D Everyone seems more excited than you are.
E It seems that for years everyone has just assumed that of course you'll go.
F Whatever the story is,there are always people who regret decisions they've made.
G But maybe in your heart you know that you are going for the wrong reasons.

"We have shown that playing a driving game can produce the same benefits as playing a shooting game,"said Wu."This could be very important in situations where we wish to train people to improve them.Driving games are likely to be more acceptable than shooting games because of the lower levels of violence.And young kids are not encouraged to play any violent video games."
