A drunken burglar in the Orrell Park area of Liverpool, ended up leaping out of a window after a 10-year-old girl asked him to prove he was a superhero.

The drunken thief who pretended he was Superman to stop a child raising the alarm has been caught after he leapt from the apartment building in his pants to make the girl convinced.

Thief Ethan Adamson, 25, told police that he had broken into a fifth-floor flat after a drinking party, believing it was empty.

But he was horrified when the owner’s 10-year-old daughter woke up while he was there.

From his hospital bed, the thief told reporters, “To keep her quiet, I told her I was really Superman and I’d soon be flying off back to my secret headquarters.”

“She called my bluff (向…摊牌) and told me, ‘If you’re Superman, show me you can fly or I’ll scream’.

“I had no choice so I stripped to my pants to look more like a superhero and went to the window. I saw another roof below and I thought I could make it but it turned out to be a lot further down than thought. I know it doesn’t make sense but it did to me when I was drunk.”

Police later found him on the roof in just his yellow pants, covered in cuts and bruises(淤青) after a neighbor heard his cries of pain.

He now faces seven years behind bars for burglary.

Police spokesman Frank Armado said, “He was in quite a serious state and couldn’t move until we got up there using ladders. He was treated for his injuries and we got him some fresh clothes, before taking him to hospital where he is being kept under guard until he is well enough to be arrested.”

New rules will let millions of Americans know where more of their food comes from. The law is known as COOL—Country of Origin Labeling.

American Congress first passed the law in 2002. Stores have had to label seafood by country of origin since 2005. But industry pressure delayed other requirements until last week.

Products that must now be labeled include fresh fruits and vegetables, muscle meats and some kinds of nuts. But the rules are complex, and many foods are excluded. For example, organ meats are free to be labeled. So are processed foods, including cooked or smoked food.

The United States has imported more and more food in recent years to save money and expand choices. Country-of-origin labeling has become more common lately but has still been limited in many stores.

Food safety is one reason why some shoppers pay close attention to where foods come from. For example, when a large number of people recently got sick from salmonella, officials blamed peppers from Mexico. Yet the last big food scare involved spinach (菠菜) grown in California. But labeling is also a way for people to know they are getting what they want. Some want to buy local foods or foods from a particular country.

The country-of-origin labeling law gives stores 30 days to correct any violations (违反) that are found. Stores and suppliers that are found to be deliberately violating the law could be fined 1000 dollars per violation. Federal inspectors are not to take action to enforce the law for six months to give time for an education campaign.

Some food safety activists say they are generally pleased with the law. They call it a good step that will give people more useful information.

1.What’s the regulation in the new rules?

A. Stores have to label seafood by country of origin.

B. The country-of-origin labeling has to be marked on more food.

C. Labeling of food should include more useful information.

D. Stores have to label food by its producing date from now on.

2.Consumers are more concerned about where foods come from because _________.

A. they are particular about the tastes of the food

B. they are curious about the country of the food origin

C. most of the shoppers are food safety activists themselves

D. they’re concerned about food safety and want to get what they want

3.Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?

A. Store owners are most likely to be the supporters of the law.

B. Most Americans prefer imported vegetables to vegetables grown in local places.

C. The government of America will forbid importing peppers from Mexico.

D. The law was not fully carried out until last week because of food industry’s resistance.

任务型阅读

请认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。每空一词

Self-esteem is all about how much people value themselves, and how worthwhile they feel. Self-esteem is important because feeling good about yourself can affect how you behave. A person who has high self-esteem will make friends easily, is more in control of his or her behavior, and will enjoy life more.

Some teens struggle with their self-esteem when they begin puberty(青春期) because the body goes through many changes. These changes, combined with a natural desire to feel accepted, mean it can be tempting for people to compare themselves with others. They may compare themselves with the people around them or with actors they see on TV or in magazines.

It’s not just development that affects self-esteem, though. Many other factors can affect a person’s body image too.

Family life can sometimes influence self-esteem. Some parents spend more time criticizing their kids and the way they look than praising them, which can reduce kids’ ability to develop good self-esteem.

Sometimes, classmates and peers may also make negative comments and laugh at the way they look . Sometimes racial and ethnic prejudice is the source of such comments. Although these often come from ignorance, sometimes they can affect someone’s body image and self-esteem.

Some people think they need to change how they look or act to feel good about themselves. But actually all you need to do is change the way you see your body and how you think about yourself.

The first thing to do is recognizethat your body is your own, no matter what shape, size, or color it comes in. If you’re very worried about your weight or size, check with your doctor to verify that things are OK. But it’s no one’s business but your own what your body is like—ultimately, you have to be happy with yourself.

Next, identify which aspects of your appearance you can realistically change and which you can’t. If there are things about yourself that you want to change and can, do this by making goals for yourself. For example, if you want to get fit, make a plan to exercise every day and eat nutritious foods.

When you hear negative comments coming from within yourself, tell yourself to stop. Try building your self-esteem by giving yourself three compliments(赞扬) every day. By focusing on the good things you do and the positive aspects of your life, you can change how you feel about yourself.

Satellites play big roles in modern life. Some look downward to monitor environmental conditions on Earth.Others look outward in search of major solar flares(耀斑) that can trouble the transmission(传送) of electrical power to homes and businesses. Some spy on our enemies. Others relay communications around the globe. But all of these million-dollar wonders of technology can be knocked out by a collision with space junk ---debris (碎片 )from satellites and other earthly technology orbiting high above the planet. Now,a teen from Jordan has designed a satellite to chase down space junk , collect it and then deal with it.

Even bits of space junk as small as dots of paint pose a threat , says Dana. That's because this debris orbits our planet at speeds up to some 28,200 kilometers per hour. Such high speed explains why tiny paint dots have damaged the windshields of space shuttles so badly that they needed to be replaced.

Researchers have come up with many ideas for getting rid of space junk. Some have suggested vaporizing(蒸发) small bits with lasers. Others have proposed launching satellites to collect the debris. Dana's design falls into this category.

Here's how hers would work : A radar system aboard the satellite would scan and find a piece of space junk. Then, thrusters(推进器)would change the satellite's orbit so that it could chase down the errant object. As the satellite closed in on its prey, cameras would keep it on target.

At the last minute,a door that leads to a container would open. This container needs to be strong so that it doesn't break apart when the satellite swallows the space junk,Dana explains. Finally, when the trash container was full,it would be lowered toward the earth on a kilometer-long cable and its contents released into the upper atmosphere. There, the space junk would harmlessly burn up just like a meteor (流星) does. Meanwhile, her satellite would roll the container back up so that it could collect more trash.

1.What is focused on in the first paragraph?

A. The types of satellites being categorized into.

B. The tracks of satellites orbiting above the planet.

C. The sources of space junk coming from.

D. The danger that satellites face in space.

2.Why can small pieces of space junk threaten satellites?

A. They travel at a very high speed.

B. They are difficult to track by satellites.

C. They can blow up into millions of pieces.

D. They are as soft as a ball in the air.

3.The underlined words "the errant object" refer to_____.

A. the radar system that scans space junk

B. the space junk that travels in disorder

C. the satellite that doesn't keep its track

D. the camera that can't keep space junk on target

4.According to the Dana's design, space junk in her satellite___________.

A. will be swallowed and stored in its trash bin

B. will be broken apart in the trash container

C. will be destroyed by heat in the upper atmosphere

D. will be transported to the earth through a cable
