阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、和D)中,选出最佳选项。

Tonight, my piano concert was the most important thing in my family. My grandparents were coming by plane to hear me play. Even my busy Aunt Dianne who is on TV every night reading the news, was coming.

But one thing was for sure. I would never win an award for my piano playing. And that's just because the more I practiced ,the more nervous I got. So there I was, on stage, in my beautiful dress, and I sat down at the piano. But when I started to play, I hit a wrong note. I told myself to start over. But then I hit the wrong note again. It was as if I hadn't practiced at all.

Finally the disaster was over. I ran off the stage. I couldn't understand why people were applauding. But they were. My mom and my dad had flowers for me, and we were all supposed to go out for a nice dinner, but I couldn't. I just wanted to go home and cry and never go anywhere again. After we went back home, Aunt Dianne just came in and sat down on the side of my bed.

"It was my first night on the air," she said."I had never been on television before, and I made a mistake. I mispronounced my name and the name of the news show. And you know what? No one even noticed but me. Just like tonight, no one noticed—just you". Aunt Dianne was right. I think we are harder on ourselves than anyone else is. Maybe I will leave my room. And maybe, I'll play the piano again.

The other day, I was invited my friend Sam’s home for dinner. I felt a bit surprising when I saw Bill there. It was two month since we two had quarreled, so I was embarrassed and didn’t know how to do. I sat down on the sofa but began to watch TV. Later Sam came to ask me to make up with Bill. Until then I realize that Sam had arranged the meeting on purpose. He went up to Bill and greeted him warmly, smiled at him. He looked very happily and talked with me excitedly. That night, we had a great fun together.

Many people believe that you lose the ability to learn new languages as you get older. Language experts, however, will tell you that you’re never too old to learn a new language. As you get older, it can be more difficult to learn a new language, though.

Children and adults learn new languages in different ways. For children, language is their life. They study for thousands of hours every year, because they need to learn languages to become part of their communities. Adults, on the other hand, are already part of a language community. Learning a new language means becoming part of another language community, and adults seldom get the chance to practice as much as young children do.

Moreover, children learning a new language are expected to make mistakes. This gives them freedom when learning to be daring and confident. Adults, however, often feel pressured to be perfect when learning a new language. This can discourage many people and make it even harder to learn a new language.

Research has shown that children who learn a new language when they are very young will not be likely to have a “foreign” accent when speaking a different language. Some scientists also believe that it can take up to 10,000 hours of study to master a new language. This can be difficult for adults to achieve, but young children can accumulate(积累) those hours over several years as they grow up.

When young children learn a new language, they come to see multiple languages as a “normal” part of society. This mindset (思维模式) helps them learn a new language without feeling like they’re doing something unusual or “too hard”.

So if you want to learn a new language, go for it! It’s never too late to learn a new language. If you’re older, it may take more work, but it can be done. If you’re a young child, though, now is the time to step out and learn a new language!

1.By “language is their life”, the author means that children ________.

A. can’t live without language

B. lead a happy life every day

C. practice a new language a lot

D. are good at speaking language

2.What may make it hard for the old people to learn a new language?

A. They usually have too many interests.

B. They are afraid of being laughed at.

C. They think making mistakes is natural.

D. They always make all kinds of mistakes.

3.According to the author, a new language ________.

A. can be grasped by the old people easily

B. can never be learned by the old people

C. can be learned by both the old and the young

D. is an important skill for the old people

4.The author develops this passage by ________.

A. making several comparisons(对比)

B. presenting research findings

C. offering some typical examples

D. telling some interesting stories

Scientists around the world have been studying the warming of waters in the Pacific Ocean known as El Nino. The appearance of El Nino is known to affect the weather around the world. Scientists still do not completely understand it. Yet they now find they can use it to tell about the future in different areas of the world.

One example is the work of two scientists at Columbia University in New York, Mark Cane and Gordon Eshel. A scientist of Zimbabwe(津巴布韦), Roger Buckland worked with them. They have found that when El Nino appears, Zimbabwe has little or no rain. This means corn crops in Zimbabwe are poor. The last El Nino was in 1991 to 1993. That was when southeastern Africa suffered a serious lack of rain.

The scientists wrote about their recent work in the publication Nature. Their computer program can tell when an El Nino will develop up to a year before it does. They suggest that this could provide an effective early warning system for southern Africa, and could prevent many people from starving.

When you’re a junior in high school, three little letters quickly become larger than life: SAT.

At the start of my junior year, I realized that the environment was packed with competition. Surprisingly, this pressure didn’t come from adults. It came from the other students. Everyone in my grade had college on the brain. To get into the college of our choice, we all believed, we had to outcompete and outscore everyone else with less sleep, because time for sleeping was time you didn’t spend studying for the SAT.

I let myself get swept up in the pressure. My new motto was, if I wasn’t in every single honor level class, I wasn’t doing enough. I was bad-tempered and I couldn’t focus. I stopped talking to my friends and my mom, and I couldn’t figure out who I was. I didn’t have the confidence to know that my own passions and unique skills were what would make me stand out to colleges.

That’s when I realized: I am not my SAT score. Trying to stick to what I thought colleges wanted masked who I really am. I decided to rely on my strengths and get away from the crazy pressure I was putting on myself.

Instead of forcing myself into higher levels of math, I took on an extra history class. I learned how to love what I was doing and not what I thought I was supposed to do. I learned to shine as an individual, not a faceless member of the crowd. And I found that not only was this better for my happiness, but it also made me more effective and efficient when I studied.

To me, individuality means having the confidence to decide who I am and who I want to be, and a number on a page is never going to change that. I am more sure of myself, and more ready to apply for college, than ever.

1.At the start of the junior year, the author decided to study for the SAT ________.

A. to overcome the pressure from other high school students

B. to test how good she was at studying compared to others

C. because it was exciting to compete with others to get into college

D. because she was eager to get an advantage over others in the competition

2.When did the author realize she shouldn’t just compete for scores?

A. When she got in every single honor level class.

B. When everybody stopped talking to her.

C. When she found she was no longer her usual self.

D. When she forced herself to take advanced maths.

3.What can you infer from Paragraph 5?

A. She tried to live as who she was, not just a student focusing on grades.

B. She learned to team up with others and so gained efficiency.

C. She managed to do well in both maths and history classes.

D. She wanted to be number one and no one could change her mind.

4.Which statement best expresses the main idea of the passage?

A. Pressure brings out the best in you.

B. You will stand out by being your best self.

C. Things will happen whether you like it or not.

D. Life is just a matter of decisive times.
