1.Many people think it is safe to use a cell phone while they are driving.Yet Scores of studies suggest that real multitaskers-those who can carry out multiple (多个的) tasks equally well, make up just 2 percent of the population.More surprisingly, the so-called"supertaskers"actually have differently structured brains to the other 98 percent.
The brain areas that make supertaskers differ from the rest of the population are the same parts that are most different between humans and nonhuman primates (灵长类),according to David Strayer, director of the applied cognition lab at the University of Utah.Scientists are unsure of the reason why some brains are different. In fact,we could all benefit from doing just one task at once.
In most of us,scientists have located a"bottleneck in the brain"that may explain why we find it hard to do two things at once.
The problem appears to be caused by a logjam of nerve messages.Faced with two almost simultaneous (同时的) tasks less than 300 milliseconds apart, the brain's ability to deal with the second one slows down. The neural (神经的) response to the second task was postponed until the response to the first was completed. This means that with e-mails,phone calls, text messages and online social media all competing for our attention, often against a background of television, radio or music, our brains can reach information overload.
Scientists made the discovery after scanning the brains of volunteers attempting to multitask on a computer. The task was deliberately designed to involve the use of different senses and motorresponses.
Dr Rene Marois, one of the neuroscientists who carried out the experiment at Vanderbilt University in Nashville,Tennessee, said:"Our research offers neurological evidence that the brain cannot effectively do two things at once."The next step, the neuroscientists say,is finding out"why these areas cannot process two tasks at once."
66.How many people can drive equally well while using a cell phone?C
A.Nobody.B.Everybody.C.2 in 100.D.98 in 100.
67.The researchers tried to find out the difference betweenBbrain structures.

C.humans'and nonhuman primates'
D.supertaskers'and nonhuman primates'
68.We can infer from the article that the brain takes 300 milliseconds toA.
A.make a neural response               B.get ready for a response
C.complete a task                      D.finish two tasks
69.If weD,our brains may reach information overload.
A.serf the Internet after listening to music
B.use a cell phone against a background of television
C.complete all kinds of tasks within the same day
D.have lots of tasks queuing for responses
70.From the dictionary explanations, choose one for the underlined word"motor"in Paragraph 5.C
A.having an engine
B.relating to vehicles with engines
C.relating to nerves that make muscles move (control body movement)
D.the part of a machine that makes it move.

67.B 推理判断题.根据文章第一段最后一句"More surprisingly,the socalled‘supertaskers'actullay have differently structured brains to the other 98 percent."并结合全文内容可知,研究者们试图找出超级任务者和普通人在大脑结构上的不同.
68.A  推理判断题.根据文章第四段第二、三句"Faced with two almost simultaneous (神经的) tasks less than 300 milliseconds apart…The neural (神经的) response to the second task was postponed until the response to the first was completed."可知,大脑需要300毫秒的时间来作出神经反应.
69.D 细节理解题.根据文章第四段最后一句"This means that with emails…our brains can reach information overload."

9.An ATM that spits out cupcakes instead of cash is now filling a popular demand in the American market:late-night desire for freshly baked sweets.
In six cities across the country, sugar addicts can now purchase a cupcake for $4.25 from an automatic machine 24 hours every day.The freshly baked goods are made by the California-based cupcake shop Sprinkles.
The idea came to the company's co-founders Candace and Charles Nelson when Candace was pregnant with their first child.Candace thought it was ridiculous that she owned cupcake bakeries aad couldn't get a freshly baked treat at an unusual hour. That desire inspired the company's first cupcake ATM in Beverly Hills,Calif.in 2012.
Charles said each ATM serves about l,000 cupcakes per day.The machine is so popular that when it appeared in Manhattan, customers were lined up around the block to use it.
Yet,inventing the first cupcake ATM was not as easy as convincing customers to use it.When the Nelsons started defigning the machine, they quickly realized nothing existed that could give a fully unbroken cupcake to a customer. The company had to partner with a European firm to develop the technology that could deliver a cupcake without dropping it several feet like a typical machine. After going through a seeond development cycle with the product, the ATMs can now satisfy tlle demand of growing customers and even make as many as four cupcakes at a time.
In terms of the company,the-machine allows Sprinkles to do the impossible:increase hours of operation without raising costs. Now the company can sell cupcakes around the clock through the ATM without paying employees.

16.Have you ever noticed what happens to an idea once you express it?Just talking about it or writing it down causes you to make it clear in your own mind.How can you use this to increase your brain power?Start writing.
By putting thoughts into words,you are telling yourself the logic(逻辑)behind what you think,feel,or only partly understand.Often,explaining a thought is the process of understanding.In other words,you increase your brain power by exercising your"explain power."
Try this experiment.Explain how you'll increase your brain power,even if you have no idea how right now.Just start with anything,and create an explanation.For example,start with"I'll learn chess''or"I'll read an article on the mind every week."Explain how that will help.You'll be surprised how often this becomes a workable plan,and if you actually do this you'll have a better understanding of your brain twenty minutes from now.
Another benefit of writing is that it helps you remember.Many,if not most,highly productive people are always taking notice.You can try keeping it all in your head,but if you keep a journal of your ideas the next time you'll working on a big project,you'll probably have more success.
Want to understand a topic?Write a book about it.That's an extreme example,but if you are learning something new,write a letter to a friend about it,and you will understand it better.Want to invent something?Write an explanation of the problem,why you want to solve it,and why it is worth solving,and  you're half-way there.
Writers don't always write because they clearly understand something beforehand.Often,they write about something because they want to understand it.You can do the same.Writing will help bring you to an understanding.Give it a try.

6.You know how wonderful you are,and you know that others know how wonderful you are,but what do you do when admiration crosses over the line into jealousy?For most teens there will come a day when you realize that one of your friends is jealous and that this jealousy is hurting your friendship.When it happens,there is nothing that you can do,but the good news is that there is.Don't let jealousy spoil your relationships.Deal with it at once and you might be back to normal much sooner than you think.
It can be hard to walk up to a friend and ask them what the problem is,but if you want to save your friendship you'll  have to do just that.Don't approach them and ask why they are jealous of you,just take some time alone with them and let them know that you've been feeling like there's been something coming between you.If they refuse to respond,then use the opportunity to explain how you have been feeling.Chances are that something you say will strike a nerve and your friend will open up as well.
When you figure out what is annoying your friend,ask him or her what (s)he thinks would make the situation better.If,for example,(s)he says that (s)he feels like (s)he doesn't want to spend any time with you because you are always with your new friends from swim team then maybe you could invite him or her along the next time,just the two of you.Remember,though,that whatever solution you decide on should be a compromise.Don't limit your own talents or opportunities simply because your friend is unhappy.Try instead to include him or her in your new life and see how that works out.
Even the best of friendships can be ruined by jealousy.This destructive emotion is rarely productive and can turn best friends into worst enemies.Before taking extreme action,chat with your jealous friend to see if the two of you can work out a compromise.If you can't,be prepared to know exactly how far you will go to keep your friend and how far you won't.

67.The underlined"it"in the first paragraph refers toD
A.friendship                      B.relationship
C.admiration                      D.jealousy
68.Which of the following is NOT a proper way to face your friend when jealousy happens?B
A.Walking up to him/her and asking him/her what the problem is.
B.Walking up to him/her and asking him/her why lie/she is jealous of you.
C.Spending some time with him/her and letting him/her know what you think.
D.Spending some time with him/her and letting him/her know how you do it.
69.What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?D
A.Jealousy can turn best friends into worst enemies.
B.There's no solution to solve the problem of jealousy.
C.You should go a long way with your friend to work out a solution.
D.You may lose a friend to keep your own gifts,chances or development.
70.The purpose of the passage is toC.
A.explain what causes jealousy
B.offer some advice on making friends
C.introduce the way to cope with a jealous friend
D.explain how destructive the jealous emotion is.

13.In any culture,the development of self-control is important.This ability,which depends on the prefrontal cortex(前颚皮层),provides the basis for mental flexibility,social skills and regulation.It predicts success in education,career and marriage.Indeed,childhood self-control is twice as important as intelligence in predicting academic achievement.Contrarily,poor self-control in primary school increases the risk of adult financial difficulties,criminal behavior,single parenthood and drug dependence.
Traditionally,Asian students succeed in part because they show good self-control from an early age.In one study,Chinese preschoolers were six months ahead of American children in developing mental control.Another study found that Korean 3-year-olds did as well on such tasks as British children who were 17-months older.
Self-control can be built through practice.Chinese parenting emphasizes child training,which combines close supervision(监管) of performance with strong financial support and motivation for the child's efforts.This approach comes at a great cost to parents and children.East Asian students study long and hard.
Fortunately for American parents,psychologists find that children can develop self-control through their own effort.Behavior is powerfully shaped not only by parents or teachers but also by children themselves.The key is to take advantage of the child's own drives for play,social interaction and other rewards.
Effective approaches for building self-control combine fun with progressively increasing challenges.Rather than force activities onto an unwilling child,take advantage of his or her individual tendencies.When children develop self-control through their own effort for happiness,no parental guidance is required.Find something that the child is crazy about but that requires active effort.Whether it's doing baseball statistics or making (but not passively watching) YouTube videos,favorite hobbies build mental staying power that can also be used for math homework.

41.The first paragraph tells usA.

A.guarantee the success of one's career
B.increases the possibility of one's failure
C.bring positive influence to a person
D.influence one's intelligence greatly
43.We can learn from the second paragraph thatB.
A.Asian students are much cleverer in an early age
B.good self-control contributes much to the success of Asian students
C.17-months old British children are cleverer than Korean 3-year-olds
D.American preschoolers'mental control is developed half a year earlier
44.East Asian students study long and hard because their parentsB.
A.encourage them by giving them money
B.not only supervise but also motivate them
C.train their self-control through their own efforts
D.train their intelligence intentionally
45.We learn from the last two paragraphs thatD.
A.children are crazy about making efforts to develop their self-control
B.children's self-control can be shaped by parents and teachers
C.effective approaches for building self-control can combine with math

11.After researching the history of the Vietnam War,I called my mum and asked her if she knew anyone who went to Vietnam that I could interview.She thought for a while and suddenly remembered that she has a cousin who is a veteran of the Vietnam War.
She says,"I know him since I was little.He was one of the greatest athletes of the school.You can not imagine how good and fast he was.Well,he was ranked number 18in the country for being an outstanding track and field runner.But now,those things are only memories."
I called him and introduced myself.He was in an agreeable mood at the beginning,but as soon as I began to question him,his attitude changed."What happened in Vietnam?"I asked.There was a moment of silence on the other line,and then he said he was willing to tell me about Vietnam.
He said that he was drafted when he was 20years old and that the two years later he spent there a part of his life he would rather forget.He said,"The problem is that you will never imagine how much suffering and pain I saw in that place."There is not one book or article that can really describe the human disaster that took place there.There is nothing worse in this world than killing a man who you know has a family.It is very sad,but it is the truth,and it turns more complex when you realize you were part of that truth.
When I returned to Puerto Rico,it was a total disaster:young kids without fathers,wives without husbands.Most of those who made it back have no legs,like me,or no arms.I was praised because of my bravery,but for me,that was and is pure nonsense,because that war decided my future,decided the future of my family.I,now,am just a veteran who has nothing.
The thing that bothers me the most is that the people who decided to fight will probably never know that it is likely to kill a man,or feel pain and suffering from hunger and the absence of love.In war,every minute you are fearing because the only thing you have in your mind is that if you don't kill first you are going to get killed.

66.Why did the author's mother say"Those things are only memories"?C
A.Because she would rather keep what happened in the past as a secret.
B.Because her cousin is no longer a vigorous young man.
C.Because though her cousin was a good runner,he lost his leg during the war.
D.Because time passed quickly and she can't remember much of the past days.
67.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the 4th paragraph?D
A.Books and articles all presented a false picture of the war.
B.It takes mental strength to survive the war.
C.The sufferings during the war greatly damaged the memory of soldiers,
D.The author's uncle felt very painful when he realized the truth of the war.
68.Why did the author's uncle find the praises"pure nonsense"?B
A.Because praises came too late.
B.Because no praise could make up for his loss.
C.Because he didn't kill anyone during the war.
D.Because too many praises seemed worthless.
69.What can we infer from the last paragraph?C
A.Those who decide to fight should take part in the war by themselves.
B.The veterans could stand any hardship in their life after the war.
C.Those who made the war should be severely blamed.
D.Firing first is the best policy on the battlefield.
