I was fifteen months old, a happy kid until the day I fell. It was a 1 fall. I landed on a glass rabbit which cut my eye badly enough to make it blind. Trying to save the eye, the doctors stitched(缝合) the eyeball together where it was 2, leaving a big ugly scar(疤痕) in the middle of my eye. The attempt 3, but my mother, in all of her wisdom, found another doctor who knew that if the eye were removed 4, my face would grow up badly distorted(扭曲),5 my scarred, sightless, cloudy and gray eye lived on with me. As I grew, this sightless eye in so many ways 6 me.
I walked with my face looking at the 7 so that people would not see the 8 me. Yet my mother would say to me, at every turn, “Hold your head up high and 9 the world. If you hold your head up high, it will be OK, and people will see your 10 soul.” She continued this 11 whenever I was trying to hide.
Mama’s words were of great help for me to face the world 12. As a teenager, even though I tended to look down to hide my shame, I found that sometimes when I held my head up high and let people know me, they 13 me. In high school, I was 14 both academically and socially. I was 15 elected class president. My mother’s words helped me begin to realize that by letting people look at my face, I let them 16 the intelligence and beauty behind both eyes, even if they couldn’t see it on the 17.
Now I’m a happy wife and great mother. The message “Hold your head up high,” has been
18 many times in my 19 home. Each of my children has felt 20 invitation, and the gift my mother gave me has lived on in another generation.

Before discussing different kinds of emotions, let us briefly talk about how researchers 1bodily processes, actions and behavior, and how this relates to what we do in our daily lives when we observe emotions in 2.
Bodily processes can be directly measured by 3 of a polygraph. (测谎器)When a polygraph is skillfully used to 4 how we react bodily with what we are 5, it is called a "lie detector". Bodily processes can also be measured 6. This is what we do when we observe someone blushing (脸红). However, we are not always 7 of what bodily processes respond to.
Measuring action 8 behavior is the other way researchers assess the emotions. 9, one measure of fear of snakes is how 10 a person will go to the snake. Another procedure is to have a person 11 how afraid he is, or how he feels, in this way, researchers have 12 the so-called "fear thermometer" to assess a person’s fear. 13 our everyday living, we do very much the same thing. Only not too 14. We react to what a person does, what he says, 15 he says it, and how he looks. Is he smiling? Is his voice trembling? We put all this 16 together to infer what a person is feeling.
17, we do not always act as we feel. Sometimes we do things that we don’t feel like doing. 18 we say we feel one way and then we act another. Actors, for example, successfully learn to "make believe" emotions, or learn to 19 them. Thus we 20 always tell what a person is feeling by what he says or by what he does.

I lived next door to Debbie and her 84-year-old mother, Nan, for about six months. One night last summer, Debbie asked me to check on her mother because she worked the overnight shift (夜班) at a nursing home.
I was glad to help. But I1felt a little funny about it.2, I’ve been blind since I was a baby and out of3for years. In fact, at 54, I came to wonder if I had any4to live.
A bit after 9:00 pm, I heard a sound—over the years my ears have grown super5. It was Nan. “Jim, Jim. The house is6! Help!”
I went as far as I could to Debbie’s. I got to the front door,7for the key and unlocked the door. “Nan! Where are you?” I called.
“Here, Jim. Help!” her voice was8and low.
I felt my9inside. “Nan, where are you? Keep10!” “Here, Jim, here!” sounds as if she’s1112 in the sweet, fresh summer air.
Later the fire truck arrived. Debbie came too. Nan and I heard the sound of the13coming down. Finally, the firefighters14the fire.
I heard Nan crying. She said, “I was so15and got turned around. I couldn’t find the door. You saved my life.”
Now Debbie’s voice quivered (发抖), “You’re a hero. You rescued my mom.”
I hardly knew what to say. Two hours earlier I was wondering whether I really mattered to anyone. And now I saved a life. Nan and Debbie were thanking me. Truth was, I wanted to thank them. Nan wasn’t the only one who had been saved that day.

When we read books we seem to enter a new world. This new world can be similar to the one we are living in, or it can be very 1. Some stories are told 2 they were true. Real people who live in a 3world do real things; in other words, the stories are about people just like us doing what we do. Other stories, such as the Harry Potter books, are not 4 . They are characters and creatures that are very different from us and do things that would be 5for us.
But there is more to books and writing than this. If we think about it, even realistic writing is only6. How can we tell the difference between what is real and what is not real? For example, when we read about Harry Potter, we 7seem to learn something about the real world. And when Harry studies magic at Hogwarts, he also learns more about his real life than 8. Reading, like writing, is an action. It is a way of 9. When we read or write something, we do much more than simple look at words on a page. We use our 10 -- which is real-- and our imagination-- which is real in a different way --- to make the words come to life in our minds. www.zxxk.com
Both realism and fantasy(幻想) 11 the imagination and the “magic” of reading and writing to make us think. When we read 12realistic, we have to imagine that the people we are reading about are just like us, even though we 13that we are real and they are14. It sounds 15, but it works. When we read, we fill in missing information and 16about the causes and effects of what a character does. We help the writer by 17 that what we read is like real life. In a way, we are writing the book, too.
Most of us probably don’t think about what is going on in our 18 when we are reading. We pick up a book and lose 19 in a good story, eager to find out what will happen next. Knowing how we feel 20 we read can help us become better readers, and it will help us discover more about the real magic of books.

People do not analyse every problem they meet. Sometimes they try to remember a solution from the last time they had a 1 problem. They often accept the opinion or ideas of other people. Other times they begin to act without 2; they try to find a solution by trial and error. However, when all of these methods 3 , the person with a problem has to start analysing. There are six 4
5, the person must recognize that there is a problem. For example, Sam’s bicycle is broken, and he cannot ride it to class as he usually does. Sam must 6 that there is a problem with his bicycle.
Next the person must 7 the problem. Before Sam can repair his bicycle, he must know why it does not work. For example, he must 8 the parts that are wrong.
Now the person must look for 9 that will make the problem clearer and lead to  10 solutions. For example, suppose Sam 11 that his bike does not work because there is something wrong with the brakes. 12, he can look in his bicycle repair book and read about brakes, talk to his friends at the bike shop, or look at his brakes carefully.
After 13 the problem, the person should have several suggestions for a possible solution. Take Sam as an example 14, his suggestions might be: tighten or loosen the brakes; buy new brakes and change the old ones.
In the end, one 15 seems to be the solution to the problem. Sometimes the 16 idea comes quite 17 because the thinker suddenly sees something in a 18 way. Sam, for example, suddenly sees there is a piece of chewing gum stuck to a brake. He immediately hits on the solution to his problem: he must 19 the brake.
Finally the solution is 20. Sam does it and finds his bicycle works perfectly. In short he has solved the problem.

From then on, I always help others in trouble, because I believe I am really making a difference to them!
