18.You may have heard that a young man named Abner Doubleday invented the game known as baseball in Cooperstown,New York,during the summer of 1839.Doubleday then went on to become a Civil War hero,while baseball became America's beloved national pastime.The story is untrue.Actually,Doubleday was still at West Point,a military academy in 1839,and he never claimed to have anything to do with baseball.
In 1907,a special committee used weak evidence-namely the claims of one man,Abner Graves-to come up with the Doubleday origin story.The officials would rely on the myth's lasting power in the 1930s,when they established the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in the village.
As it turns out,the real history of baseball is a little more complex than the Doubleday story.References to games resembling baseball in the United States date back to the 18th century.Its most direct ancestors appear to be two English games:cricket (板球) and rounder-a children's game brought to New England by the earliest settlers.By the time of the American Revolution,variations (演变) of such games were being played on schoolyards and college campuses across the country.They became even more popular in newly industrialized cities where men sought work in the mid-19th century.In September 1845,a group of New York City men founded the New York Knickerbocker Baseball Club.One of them made a new set of rules that would form the basis for modern baseball.
Cartwright's changes made the game faster-paced and more challenging from older games like cricket.In 1846,the Knickerbockers played the first official game of baseball against a team of cricket players,beginning a new,uniquely American tradition.

28.What can we know according to the first paragraph?C
A.Baseball was invented by Abner Doubleday.
B.Abner Doubleday fought in the Civil War.
C.Doubleday stayed at West Point for some reason.
D.Doubleday said he had much to do with baseball.
29.Why did the Doubleday origin story come up?C
A.Because a special committee was founded.
B.Because Doubleday provided false evidence.
C.Because Abner Graves told a Doubleday story.
D.Because Abner Graves worked with Doubleday.
30.The real history of baseball isB.
A.much simpler than the Doubleday story
B.that baseball comes from two English games
C.about a children's game from New England
D.more interesting than that of rounder and cricket
31.It can be inferred from the passage thatA.
A.Doubleday might have been an army officer
B.Doubleday is the most respected in America
C.Doubleday in fact came from Britain
D.Doubleday invented rounder and cricket.

"It's a very expensive city to live in,"Mr.Bostrom writes in an email to CNN's Eoghan Macguire."If you manage to get an apartment that the city owns,it can be quite affordable.The screening criteria included the ability to participate in a variety of activities,such as cooking or playing instruments,but the number of applicants for those apartments is so high that waiting list takes forever,"he says.
According to Helsinki's Youth Housing Association,they city council aims to ensure that every young person will have a home by 2018.Miki Mielonen,a representative of the youth department,says this project,currently in its trial stages,will help out young people while offering social benefits to senior citizens."I think there is quite a rigid opinion in Finland with many people thinking young of the old ideas that we are going to break down."
32.Helsinki probably rents a cheap apartment to a young man whoC.
A.reaches the age of 25
B.has financial problems
C.promises to accompany the elderly
D.agrees to share it with his neighbor
33.Which is the root reason for the housing problems in Helsinki?A
A.The population explosion
B.The high living standard
C.World's priciest apartment rent
D.Low employment of college graduates
34.According to Mr Bostrom,the cheap apartments areC.
A.well-decorated

4.Last year more than one million Filipinos worked abroad as servants,nurses,sailors and in other difficult but low-paid jobs.Southeast Asians leave their poorer countries for their richer neighbours.
Many of these wage-earners return in the end.In the meantime,they send home huge amounts of money-in the Philippines'case,over 10% of its GDP.Between January and November,the amount was up 18% on the same period of 2005.Poverty and unemployment are still high in the Philippines and other labour-exporting (劳务输出) countries.They would be far worse but for this outflow of bodies and inflow of dollars.As for those Asian countries that import (输入) labour,as in Europe,falling birth rates mean they are going to need more foreign workers.
On January 13th leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) signed an agreement to help migrant (流动的) workers-with the realization that the flow of labour between their countries is a growing problem that they cannot blame on outsiders.A 2005study showed that 8.4million Southeast Asians worked outside their home countries,but this did not include the huge numbers of Indonesians doing so without papers.So the true total is probably rather higher.
Of the ten ASEAN countries,the Philipines,Indonesia,Myanmar,Cambodia,Vietnam and Laos export labour,Singapore and Brunei import it,and Thailand and Malaysia do both.Sziraczki of the UN's International Labour Organization points out that,in the next ten years,the total labour force of the worker-exporting countries should grow by about a third.It makes sense to work on the problem before it gets out of control.
People in the receiving countries seem to be worried about competition for their jobs.Most Thais said their government should admit no more foreign workers,and a few thought otherwise.Even in Singapore,just over half of people are against admitting more foreign workers.Malaysians think that the increase in foreign workers has worsened crime rates (犯罪率).
32.It can be inferred from the case of the Philippines thatC.
A.the country is Asia's main source of migrant workers
B.labour exports lead to a 10% growth of its GDP
C.the outflow of labour helps solve its social problems
D.the country both exports and imports labour force
33.The flow of labour is a growing problem becauseA.
A.there is a greater flow of labour than reported
B.more Indonesians work abroad without papers
C.some countries suffer from low birth rates
D.the ASEAN is against admitting foreign workers
34.For the labour-importing countries,the flow of labour may lead toD.
A.higher birth rates
B.lower crime rates
C.greater money inflows
D.stronger job competition
35.The writer of the text seems toB.
A.support the flow of labour between countries
B.report fairly on the question of labour flow
C.express his worries over the ASEAN's decision
D.regard the outflow of labour as a serious problem.
