Few people would defend the Victorian attitude on children, but if you were a parent in those days, at least you knew where you stood: children were to be seen and not heard. Freud and his colleagues did away with all that and parents have been puzzled ever since. The child’s happiness is all- important, they say, but what about the parents’ happiness? Modern child-rearing manuals(抚养孩子手册)would never permit cruelty to children .The trouble is you are not allowed even to shout. Who knows what deep psychological(心理的)wounds you might cause? The poor child may never recover from the dreadful experience. So it is the parents that bend over backwards to avoid giving their children complex which a hundred years ago hadn’t even been heard of. Certainly, a child needs love, and a lot of it. But the excessive permissive(纵容) of modern parents is surely doing more harm than good.

Psychologists(心理学家) have succeeded in weakening parents confidence in their own authority. And it hasn’t taken children long to get wind of the fact. In addition to the great modern classics on child care, there are countless articles in magazines and newspapers. With so much advice flying about, mum and dad just don’t know what to do any more. In the end, they do nothing at all. So, from early childhood, the kids are in charge and parents’ lives are regulated according to the needs of their kids. When the little dears develop into teenagers, they take complete control. Lack of authority over the years makes teenagers rebellion against parents all the more violent. If the young people are going to have a party, for example, parents are asked to leave the house. Their presence merely spoils the fun. What else can the poor parents do but obey?

The author says that today’s parents _______.

       A. are bombarded with excessive amounts of child-care literature.

       B. draw a distinction between permissiveness and carelessness.

       C. are only towards children from happy home backgrounds.

       D. weigh their children’s knowledge rather than intelligence.

The phrase “get wind of” (Para.2) most likely means _______ .

A. become used to                  B. try to avoid

C. realize                            D. become puzzled of

Which of the following can be inferred from this passage?

A. Victorian child rearing is a model for parents to follow.

B. Psychologists have much to answer for today’s problems on child care.

C. With the help of so much advice, raising children is easier than ever.

D. Parents like to enjoy the freedom when there is a party in the house.

What’s the main idea of this passage?

A. The excessive permissiveness of today’s parents is harmful to children.

B. Psychologists shouldn’t interfere so much with child care.

C. Parents should hold the Victorian attitudes towards children.

D. Children are too sensitive to be hurt.

Running like the wind, roaring (咆哮) like thunder, tigers have long been feared and respected as a king of the animal world. But last week a report said that there are no more than 30 wild tigers left in south China.

This was the conclusion of a team of scientists from China's State Forestry Administration and the World Nature Fund.

The South China tiger, also known as the Chinese tiger, is native to southern China. In the 1950's, there were over 4000 tigers found in mountain forests in the country. But due to the destruction of their natural habitat (栖息地) and uncontrolled hunting, it has been pushed on to the list of the world's top ten most endangered species.

Sixty-six of the big cats can be found in the cages of a dozen zoos around China. But they are nothing like their wild cousins. They have lost their natural skills such as hunting and killing. If they were set free they could not look after themselves.

"Breeding has damaged the quality of the species", said Pei Enle, deputy director of the Shanghai Zoo.

To reintroduce the species into the wild, the country started a programme to send five to ten young tigers to South Africa.Four of them have already arrived.Progress has been made as two elder tigers have recovered some of their instincts(本能) and can hunt wild animals by themselves at the African base.

" South Africans are very experienced in reintroducing big animals to the wild. The country has very good natural conditions for the tigers to learn in", said Lu Jun, office director of the National Wildlife Research and Development Center." We tried in Fujian Province, but it was not successful as there was not a complete eco-chain(生物链) and there was a lack of space."

The tigers should return to China in 2007 when the reservations in Fujian are ready.

What is the main reason for the South China tiger becoming one of the world's top ten most endangered species?

A.Because it has lost its natural instincts.

       B.Because there is not a complete eco-chain.

C.Because there is no space for it.

D.Because uncontrolled hunting has destroyed its natural living conditions.

How is the programme of sending several tigers to South Africa getting on?

A.Its effect still remains to be seen.

B.Two tigers can already compete with their wild cousins.

C.Some of the tigers are already on the road to recovering their natural skills.

D.The tigers should be able to recover their instincts completely by 2007.

By saying " but they are nothing like their wild cousins", the writer means that ______.

A.they are no longer feared by other wild animals

B.they don't know how to hunt or kill

C.a complete change has resulted in the species because of breeding

D.to reintroduce them into the wild has become an urgent task

What is the purpose of sending young tigers to South Africa?

A.To help the tigers recover their ability to live in the wild.

B.To provide them with a better environment.

C.To get the tigers to go on a tour.

       D.To find a complete eco-chain for them.

Which one is not the reason for South Africa being chosen as the training place?

A.Because the tigers can hunt wild animals by themselves at the African base.

B.Because South Africans are skilled at dealing with the tigers.

C.Because there is a complete eco-chain and enough space there.

D.Because the country has good natural conditions for the tigers to learn in.

A serious problem for today’s society is who should be responsible for our elderly and how to improve their lives. It is not only a financial problem but also a question of the system we want for our society. I would like to suggest several possible solutions to this problem.

First, employers should take the responsibility for their retried employees. To make this possible,  a percentage of profits should be set aside for this purpose. But when a company must  take life long responsibility for its employees, it may suffer from a commercial disadvantage due to higher employee costs.

Another way of solving the problem is to return the responsibility to the individual. This means each person must save during his working years to pay for his years of retirement. This does not seem a very fair model since some people have enough trouble paying for their daily life without trying to earn extra to cover their retirement years. This means the government might have to step in to care for the poor.

In addition, the government could take responsibility for the care of the elderly. This could be financed through government taxes to increase the level of pensions. Furthermore, some institutions should be created for senior citizens, which can help provide a comfortable life for them. Unfortunately , as the present situation in our country shows, this is not a truly viable  answer. The government can seldom afford to care for the elderly, particularly when it is busy trying to care for the young.

One further solution is that the government or social organizations establish some workplaces especially for the elderly where they are independent.

To sum up, all these options have advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect that some combination of these options may be needed to provide the care we hope to give to our elderly generations.

What is the passage mainly about?

A. The problem faced by the old in society.

B. Why we should take responsibility for the old.

C. How we can improve the lives of the old

D. Where the old can go to get their pensions.

According to the passage, how can the government help to improve the lives of retired people?

A. Set aside some profits to help people with problems after they retire

B. Increase saving levels of people during their working years

C. Increase the discounts for food and transport for the old

D. Make available pensions for those who have retired

The underlined word “viable” most probably means ____.

A. impossible   B. practical   C. usefull   D. successful

What can be concluded from the passage?

   A. Taking care of the old is mainly an issue of money

   B. Employers should allow their workers to retire at a later age

   C. Becoming independent should be the goal of most old people

   D. There is no single solution to the problem of the old

What is the writer’s main purpose of writing this article?

   A. To point out the need for government supporting for old people

   B. To make general readers aware of the problems of retired people

   C. To discuss some possible solutions to an important social problem

   D. To instruct retired people on how they can have a happier life.
