TV is an excellent resource for hearing and listening to English. The pictures help you understand what is being said, and TV news is an ideal way to help improve your listening ability because within a short period of time the same news is often repeated. This means that you can watch basically the same news programme several times within a day, and that every succeeding programme will help you to understand what is being said.

These preparatory steps are very important before your listening:

*Find out which news report you want to listen to, when and on what channel.CCTV 9 is a good choice because this is China's English channel and has regular news reports.

*Just watch the news reports for a few days first, before requiring yourself to understand the stories.Give yourself time to get familiar with the newsreaders and their accents. You should also get an idea of the structure of the entire report as well as the structure of a typical news story.

*Watch the news in Chinese first. This will tell you what the main news items are and help prepare you for understanding news reports in English.

While listening, you should pay attention to a few things that you may try to do:

*You can aim at just getting what a story is about.Give a one-to-two-sentence description after each story.

*Put forward a few questions to yourself about a story, and then seek to answer them from your listening. You can do this.by stopping the tape as soon as the headline is read to you.

*You may write a full transcript(抄本)of a story to practise intensive listening. This may bring notice to listening problems that have skipped your attention when you only concentrate on the content.

Even though the listening part is over, some follow-up activities will help you reinforce(加强)your learning. You may talk about the news with one or more friends. This provides an opportunity to produce a summary or express your thoughts in a brief article.

The House Committee on Pollution(HCP)held a special meeting last night to discuss the Albanian cans.A difficult situation arose last week after the Albanians had refused to allow an international environmental organization to test cans of industrial waste that they were throwing into the Sea of Japan. It was thought that the cans may have contained nuclear waste, even though the Albanians have strongly denied this.

Six crew members from the Greenpeace ship “Tiger 2”, which is still closely monitoring the Albanian ship, secretly went aboard at night and took away one of the waste cans. The first test results of the waste in the can suggest nuclear waste rather than other industrial waste according to a report from the Japan laboratory where the tests are being carried out.Further tests are necessary to determine the exact level of nuclear content.

The Greenpeace action has annoyed the Albanians but the Foreign Secretary here has insisted that the Albanian ship leave the Sea of Japan and return home immediately. The Albanians, not surprisingly, have refused to do so, and demanded that “Tiger 2” be called off from watching them.

The International Community is suggesting that the Albanian ship be properly searched and is saying that it is very important and necessary that no more cans are thrown until the truth of this matter is made clear.Obviously, the Japanese government is particularly anxious to discover exactly what is being thrown so close to their northern islands, possibly polluting their fishing industry and putting people’s lives in danger. The International Community is to meet with the Albanian government tomorrow for the third time in a week.

In present-day China, we can find two types of fast food:western and Chinese. However, not until the recent decade has western fast food become popular in China. Before the first hamburger walked its way into the Chinese food market, we had little idea about such terms as hot dog, pizza, potato chips, let alone Kentucky and McDonald’s.It is the reform and opening-up policy:that has brought about the interflow of the food culture between China and the Western countries.

Fast food, both Chinese and western, has several advantages. In the first place, fast food, as is characterized by its name, is fast. The food is always ready and fresh, waiting for its customers. This saves people’s precious time, and consequently goes well with the tempo(速度)of life in modern society.

Secondly, it is very convenient. As we know, fast food restaurants are much the same as cafeterias.Customers may feel free to help themselves to any variety provided and eat to their hearts’ content(满足).

Thirdly, fast food restaurants are environmentally comfortable.Clean dishes, shiny tables, decent service and light music all stimulate people’s appetite to eat more.

The above-mentioned advantages make fast food become rooted in almost all parts of the country and enjoy popularity among people. That’s also why nowadays Singapore fast food, Turkish fast food and India-Pakistan fast food have found their homes in China.

As every coin has two sides, fast food also has its disadvantages such as lack of nutrition, dull taste.Nevertheless, these are minor points compared with its advantages.Since most people agree with fast food, it tends to grow more rapidly.
