Midsummer was the festival throughout most of England, most of Scotland, Shetland Islands, and the Orkneys. Fires, dancing, games, and various shenanigans(胡闹)were the general rule on this “longest day of the year”. But the festival has lost some of its color in the passing centuries.

By the 1680s, British folklorist(民俗学家)John Aubrey reported that “still in many places, they make fires on the hills: but the Civil War in Britain in the 1640s have put all these customs quite out of fashion”.

Thousands of years ago, builders of Stonehenge(巨石阵)no doubt celebrated their own midsummer festival among the stones. More recently a British group called the Ancient Order of Druids, founded in 178l by Hurle, suggested celebrating the festival on June 21 every year at the site. In the later years this day attracted huge crowds. Bread and wine, candles, bells, incense (熏香), and priests(神甫)in white and purple shared wine from a silver cup as the midsummer sun shone across the old stones. It remained a local festival for a long time in history. In the mid-1980s, vandalism(故意破坏艺术的行为)and unruly people imperiled (危害)the festival's future.

Today is the date of that afternoon in April a year ago when I first saw the strange and attractive doll (玩具娃娃) in the window of Abe Sheftel's toy shop on Third Avenue near Fifteenth Street, just around the corner from my office, where the plate on the door reads: Dr Samuel Amory. I remember just how it was that day: the first sign of spring floated across the East River, mixing with the softcoal smoke from the factories and the street smells of the poor neighbourhood. As I turned the corner on my way to work and came to Sheftel's, I was made once more known of the poor collection of toys in the dusty window, and I remembered the coming birthday of a small niece of mine in cleveland, to whom I was in the habit of sending small gifts. Therefore, I stopped and examined the window to see if there might be anything suitable, and looked at the collection of unattractive objects——a red toy fire engine, some lead soldiers, cheap baseballs, bottles of ink, pens, yellowed envelopes, and advertisements for soft-drinks. And thus it was that my eyes finally came to rest upon the doll stored away in one corner, a doll with the strangest, most charming expression on her face. I could not wholly make her out, due to the shadows and the film of dust through which I was looking, but I was sure that a deep impression had been made upon me as though I had run into a person, as one does sometimes with a stranger, with whose personality one is deeply impressed.

1.What made an impression on the author?

[ ]

A.The doll's unusual face.

B.The collection of toys.

C.A stranger he met at the store.

D.The beauty and size of the doll.

2.Why does the author mention his niece?

[ ]

A.She likes dolls.

B.The doll looks like her.

C.She lives near Sheftel's.

D.He was looking for a gift for her.

3.Why did the writer go past Sheftel's?

[ ]

A.He was on his way to school.

B.He was looking for a present for his niece.

C.He wanted to buy some envelopes.

D.None of the above is right.

4.The story takes place in the __________.

[ ]

A.early summer
B.early spring
C.midsummer
D.late spring

June came and the hay was almost ready for cutting. On Midsummer's Eve, which was a Saturday, Mr Jones went into Willington and got so drunk at the Red Lion that he did not come back till midday on Sunday. The men had milked the cows in the early morning and then had gone out rabbiting, without bowering (操心) to feed the animals. When Mr Jones got back he immediately went to sleep on the living-room sofa with the “News of the World” over his face, so that when evening came, the animals were still not fed.At last, they could stand no longer. One of the cows broke in the door of the storehouse with her horns (角) and all the animals began to help themselves to the grains. It was just then that Mr Jones woke up. The next moment he and his four men were in the storehouse with whips in their hands, whipping in all directions. This was more than the hungry animals could bear. Together, though nothing of the kind had been planned beforehand, they jumped upon their masters. Jones and his men suddenly found themselves being butted (顶撞) and kicked from all sides. The situation was quite out of their control. They had never seen animals act like this before, and this sudden uprising of creatures whom they were used to beating and whipping just as they chose, frightened them. After only a moment or two they gave up trying to defend themselves. A minute later all five of them were in full fright down the road, with the animals running after them joyfully.

Stonehenge(巨石阵)is the most famous of the stone circles of the British Islands for its unusual engineering. It is good in condition, so it is a good example to study.Built in 2800 B.C., Stonehenge shows that early people were very good at problem-solving and organization. The builders of Stonehenge had to figure out how to build it without modern machines. They also had to organize the work of hundreds, perhaps thousands, of workers to build it.

First they had to carve the stones. Then, they had to transport the heavy stones(up to four tons!)twenty kilometers to Stonehenge. The next task was to stand the stones up.The most difficult task was putting the top stones in place. Each one of these tasks took a lot of planning and a lot of strength, but the workers of Stonehenge were excellent builders.

Why did these people work so hard to build Stonehenge? Researchers believe that Stonehenge is a huge calendar.Certain stones mark the location of the rising and setting moon in midwinter.Other stones mark the rising and setting sun in midsummer. The ancient people held religious ceremonies on these days. These ceremonies probably asked the gods to bring good weather for crops and to protect the people from bad weather.

As a historical site, Stonehenge is an engineering success.Thousands of years later, it still stands. As a calendar, Stonehenge is very accurate. It shows that early people had a deep understanding of astronomy(天文学)and the movements of the sun and the moon. They didn’t have machines or computers, but Stonehenge shows people could do many things using only their muscles and their brains.
