A shopping center is a place where many different shops and stores are collected under one roof. You can buy everything there and there are also banks, restaurants and, sometimes, a post office.
There are other places in the United States which are called five-and –ten-cent stores because they used to sell things for 5 to 10 cents. Today they sell almost anything and some of the things cost several dollars. Supermarkets are found in all the cities. They sell food and many other goods. You walk around the supermarket, choose the things you want, put them into a special basket prepared by the store and pay for them all together at the door. Falling temperatures are no excuse to avoid outdoor exercise with your dog. Along with making sure you are appropriately dressed, your dog should also be properly protected from the elements. Some large breed dogs such as Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds and Huskies can tolerate the colder weather better than others. These dogs may also develop a thicker coat over time as they are exposed to colder weather.
Smaller breeds, however, like Chihuahuas and Miniature Pinschers, breeds with short coats and puppies should wear some type of protection, i.e, a coat or sweater, if the temperature drops too low. Look for coats or sweaters with high collars or a turtleneck that covers your dog from the base of the tail on top to the belly underneath.
Dog booties (毛线鞋) provide good protection from chemicals or salts on the pavement as well as mud. If you don’t use the booties, be sure to wipe your dog’s paw pads with room temperature water after taking it outside.
Other tips
When you bathe your dog, dry him completely before taking him out in the cold weather for a walk or exercise. It is especially important to keep your dog well groomed (打扮) during the winter months to protect him from the elements.
If your dog frequently participates in outdoor activities during the colder months, increase his food intake, especially protein, to help keep his coat grow thick and healthy. Dogs that are not as active during the winter months may need to have their food consumption reduced.
The amount of time you spend outside with your dog will depend on his size, breed type and age. Remember that ill or elderly dogs are more sensitive to cold weather. Dogs whom cold weather agrees with can spend hours outside without getting cold but some of the smaller and younger dogs’ exercise sessions should be kept shorter. Dogs should not be left outside unattended.
Another activity to consider is doggie daycare, which is an excellent alternative during cold weather months. It’s a great place for your dog to get plenty of physical and mental stimulation while being with other dogs.

Sex prejudices are based on and justified by the ideology(意识形态) that biology is destiny. According to this ideology, basic biological and psychological differences exist between the sexes. These differences require each sex to play a separate role in social life. Women are the weaker sex both physically and emotionally. Thus, they are naturally suited, much more so than men, to the performance of domestic(家庭的) duties. A woman’s place, under normal circumstances, is within the protective environment of the home. Nature has determined that women play caretaker roles, such as wife and mother and homemaker. On the other hand, men are best suited to go out into the competitive world of work and politics, where serious responsibilities must be taken on. Men are to be the providers; women and children are “dependents”.
The ideology also holds that women who wish to work outside the household should naturally fill these jobs that are in line with the special capabilities of their sex. It is appropriate for women, not men, to be employed as nurses, social workers, elementary school teachers, house-hold helpers, clerks and secretaries. These positions are simply an extension of women’s domestic role. Informal distinctions between “women’s work” and “men’s work” in the labor force, according to the ideology, are simply a functional reflection of the basic differences between the sexes.
Finally, the ideology suggests that nature has worked her will in another significant way. For the human species to survive over time, its members must regularly reproduce. Thus, women must, whether at home or in the labor force, make the most of their physical appearances.
So goes the ideology. It is, of course, not true that basic biological and psychological differences between the sexes require each to play sex-defined roles in social life. There is enough evidence that sex roles vary from society to society, and those role differences that do exist are largely learned.
But to the degree people actually believe that biology is destiny and that nature intended for men and women to make different contributions to society, sex-defined roles will be seen as totally acceptable.
小题1:According to the biology-is-destiny ideology, women_______.
A.cannot compete with men in any field
B.are suited more to domestic jobs than men
C.are sensitive enough to be a good caretaker
D.are too weak to do any agricultural work at all

A.women shouldn’t go out for work
B.women should earn money to add the family income
C.women going out for work should only do “women’s work”

小题3:The author thinks that the positions women hold outside_______.
A.are determined by what they are better suited to
B.grow out of their household responsibilities
C.represent their breakthrough of sex discrimination
D.are physically and emotionally suitable to them
小题4:What does the underlined sentence imply?
A.Sex roles are socially determined
B.Sex roles are emotionally and physically determined
C.Sex roles are biologically and psychologically determined
D.Sex roles are determined by education people take

1. Mean old ladies
There is always a reason why an old lady gives you a serious look – you are being too loud, dressed improperly or not crossing the street in the right place. Sometimes it can be lovely, but if you are already having a bad day, a mean old lady can drive you mad.
What to do about it:
I’ve come to realize that when people start conflicts, it is actually an expression of their inner state expressed in an outside way. You, your personality, your looks or your actions have nothing to do with it. It is not personal, so why take it personally?
2. That person, who cuts in front of everybody in line
This is something that gets me angry. Even if I am not in a hurry, I still feel bad for the other people in line who are being treated unjustly. Are you more patient than I am or do you feel annoying too?
What to do about it:
If we have negative thoughts then we are wasting our energy on negativity. Situations like this could be a great opportunity to learn to control our first negative responses and practice understanding. After all, the person may just have a quick question or maybe there is an emergency.
Friends that tell you “I told you so”
It is one thing to admit that you made a mistake and another to hear it from a friend. Friends should be there to support you and cheer you up when you are feeling down, not make themselves feel better at your expense, right?
What to do about it:
It helps to remember that when people say “I told you so”, they may mean, “Please listen to my advice to avoid future mistakes.” If this is not the help you need – voice it out, without getting defensive.
小题1:According to the author, what can you do when meeting with a mean old lady?
A.Take it personally.B.Take it seriously.
C.Don’t apologize to her.D.Don’t get upset.
小题2:When seeing someone cutting in line, we’d better ________.
A.stop him immediatelyB.treat it with a good state of mind
C.pretend not to see itD.teach him a good lesson
小题3:The third tip intends to advise you ________.
A.not to keep silent at a friend’s improper suggestion
B.to tell your friend if they have misunderstood you
C.not to talk to your friend if they feel better at your expense
D.to apologize to your friend when you’ve done something wrong
小题4:What is the best title for this passage?
A.What to do when meeting with these people?
B.How to ask your friends for help when in trouble?
C.How to give advice to your friends when asked to?
D.What to say when faced with different situations?

From Avatar to Lord of the Rings, plants are no strangers to playing big movie roles. However, no one has ever shot a film that plants themselves can watch until now. In a New York art gallery, seven house plants have spent the last seven weeks watching Strange Skies, the first travel documentary for a vegetable audience. All the plants sat in the cinema in rows, enjoying themselves in Italian sunshine.
The movie was made by American artist Jonathon Keats. It consists of Italian skies recorded over two months and made into a six-minute-long movie. The film shows the clear dawn(黎明), high clouds, amazing dusk and then beautiful night. The movie has no sound and the plants, of course, do not applaud. But Stephen Squibb, a professor from Harvard University, said these plants could benefit from it—the light of the movie keeps them alive because they can continue the process of turning light into energy.
“I realized there was a much larger audience—plants—that were not being serviced, ”Keats said. “I wanted to provide plants with entertainment that companies such as Disney provide for humans. ”Meanwhile, Keats also wants to explore plants’ sensibilities(敏感性)further. He plans to open a“restaurant for plants”at a Californian museum.
One visitor, photographer Abbas Ebrahimi, admired(羡慕)the green audience, “Plants are better than us. We die and go, while in spring they come back each time. ”But when talking about the movie, he said after thinking for a few minutes, “It doesn’t mean anything to me at all. It’s just about light. For some people, it might mean something. ”
小题1:What can we learn about Keats according to the passage?
A.He is an artist from Harvard University.
B.He opened a restaurant for plants.
C.He made the film Strange Skies.
D.He liked recording Italian skies.
小题2:It can be learned that Strange Skies .
A.has already created beautiful sound
B.was shot from dawn to dusk
C.made plants play roles in it
D.is the first travel film for plants
小题3:What did Stephen Squibb think of Strange Skies?
A.He thought it had explored plants’ sensibilities.
B.He thought it meant nothing to him.
C.He thought it could keep plants growing.
D.He thought it offered entertainment to plants.
小题4:Why did Abbas Ebrahimi admire the green audience?
A.Because they die and re-grow in spring.
B.Because they mean something to him.
C.Because there are more plants than people.
D.Because they can enjoy the movie.

No one knows why we sleep, but it’s certain that we need to. People who are prevented from sleeping begin to suffer obvious effects after a few days—they think less clearly, and they fall asleep during the working hours; some may have hallucinations(幻觉).?
There are no rules about sleep. Generally speaking, grown-ups sleep about 7 and a half hours each night and probably more than 60 per cent get between seven and eight hours. But perhaps eight per cent are quite happy with 5 hours or less, and four per cent or so find that they want ten hours or more. If you feel all right, you’re probably getting enough sleep. The important thing is not to worry how much other people get—their needs may be different. Exercise doesn’t seem to increase the need for sleep—office workers, for example, sleep for about as long as people doing physically active work.?
Children sleep more than grown-ups—perhaps 14 to 18 hours soon after birth, going down to grown-up levels by early teenage. Sleep patterns also tend(倾向) to be different in the elderly, who may sleep less at night than they did when younger, find sleep getting more broken, and often make it a rule to sleep during the daytime.
小题1:According to the passage, some people are unable to think clearly because ___________ .
A.they have hallucinations
B.they feel sleepy during the working hours
C.they don’t have enough sleep
D.they are certain to be kept from going to bed

A.All grown-ups must have at least eight-hour sleep.
B.Most of grown-ups sleep for seven or eight hours.
C.Quite a few people need only 5 hours or less for them to sleep.
D.No grown-ups sleep more than ten hours.
小题3:Whether you have got enough sleep is judged by__________.
A.how many hours you have slept
B.how many hours you need to sleep
C.whether you do exercise and physical work
D.whether you feel fresh and energetic
小题4:According to the passage, a boy of 14 years old sleeps__________.
A.as long hours as a grown-up
B.much longer hours than a grown-up
C.for 14 hours each night
D.for less than 8 hours per night

Thank you for trusting me. I enjoy exchanging my ideas with yours
The first thing I want to tell you is that if the boys are calling you names it is their fault, not yours. Boys, at your age, are different from girls. They are trying to prove that they are manly and then often do this by picking on someone who can’t really fight back. This is, of course, wrong but it happens. In general, the boys know they are bigger and stronger than you are, so they can make fun of you and make you cry and then laugh about it. If you let them see that they are hurting you, they will only do it more. It isn’t that they want to hurt you; they simply want to make themselves feel superior(优越的). It’s stupid, but it is common.
In English we say “ sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me.” Canadian children learn this from their mothers because the same thing that is happening to you in China also happens here. The best ways of getting the boys to stop calling your names is to simply ignore them, knowing that the names can’t hurt you and that the boys are being stupid. If you can laugh at them they will get tired of trying to make you cry and they’ll give up. It won’t be easy, but, trust me, it will work. There is also something else working in your favor and that is that you are growing up and the boys are beginning to notice you as a young woman. I suspect some of them actually like you and are making fun of you just to get your attention. Again, it’s stupid but it happens. In reality, you can control this situation by not letting them see you getting hurt. Laugh at them, tell them they’re acting like children and they should grow up and then walk away with your head held high.
One more thing, Nancy. It is very important that you stop hurting yourself. If someone else hurts you, it is bad enough but you should’t make it worse by then hurting yourself. Even sticking a pen into your finger can cause an infection and give you a lot of trouble and besides, it hurts. The next time you are disturbed by a group of stupid boys, write to me. You and I can talk about anything you like; about China, about Canada, about travel, anything. Having a conversation with me is better than sticking holes in your fingers, at least I hope it is.
小题1:It can be learned from the passage that the writer is        .
A.a CanadianB.an Englishman
C.Nancy’s schoolmateD.Nancy’s father
小题2:Nancy hurt herself because she      .
A.couldn’t prevent the boys taking interest in her
B.felt it her own fault to be called names by boys
C.found herself more stupid than the boys
D.wanted the boys to see her hurt by herself
小题3:We can learn that the boys call Nancy names mainly because they        .
A.want to prove manlyB.are bigger and stronger
C.mean to hurt NancyD.actually like Nancy
小题4:The best way for Nancy to stop being called names is to        .
A.talk to the writerB.cry and hurt herself
C.fight back and ignore themD.stick holes in her fingers
