What makes it rain? Rain falls from clouds for the same reason anything falls to Earth. The Earth's gravity pulls it. But every cloud is made of water droplets or ice crystal(冰晶). Why doesn't rain or snow fall constantly from all clouds? The droplets or ice crystals in clouds are extremely small. The effect of gravity on them is slight. Air currents move and lift droplets so that the net downward amount of water is zero, even though the droplets are moving constantly.

It can be seen that droplets and ice crystals behave somewhat like dust in the air in a beam of sunlight. To the casual observer, dust seems to act in a totally random fashion, moving about

without fixed direction. But in fact dust particles(分子) are much larger than water droplets and they finally fall. The average size of a cloud droplet is only 0.0004 inch in diameter(直径). It is so small that it would take sixteen hours to fall half a mile in perfectly still air, and it doesn't fall out of moving air at all. Only when the droplet grows to a diameter of 0.008 inch or larger can it fall from the cloud. The average raindrop contains a million times as much water as a tiny cloud droplet. The growth of a cloud droplet to a size larger enough to fall out is the cause of rain and other forms of precipitation. This important growth process is called "coalescence".

1. Ice crystals do NOT immediately fall to Earth because            .

A. they are kept up by air currents

B. most of them change into steam

C. they combine with other chemicals in the atmosphere

D. their electrical charges draw them away from the earth

2. The underlined word "random" in line 10 most probably means            .

A. unpredictable     B. strict    C. independent     D. abnormal

3. What can be inferred about drops of water larger than 0.008 inch in diameter?

A. They never occur.

B. They are not affected by the force of gravity.

C. In moving air they would fall to earth.

D.In still air they fall a speed of thirty-two miles per hour.

4. How much bigger is the rain drop than a loud droplet?

A. 200 times bigger

B. 1,000 times bigger

C. 100,000 times bigger

     D. 1,000,000 times bigger

The U.S. government has repeatedly made it clear that it would welcome China’s entrance into the world arena as a power. However, a series of issues since the beginning of this year, particularly Washington's stance on the U.S.-South Korean joint military exercises and the South China Sea issue, have made the world think: Is the United States ready to recognize China as a power on the world stage?

It is easier said than done for the United States to adapt itself to China's development. Lip service is far from enough to boost the development of Sino-U.S. relations. If Washington cannot find a way to recognize and accept China's peaceful rise onto the world stage, bilateral(双边的) ties will be like a roller coaster full of ups and downs. However, no one would like to see the negative effects rocky relations would bring to China, the United States and possibly to the world as a whole.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has urged China to play a greater role in solving the world's economic, environmental and political problems. She said global issues could not be solved by the United States or China alone, but without participation of the two countries, no problems would likely be solved. Washington has realized that the United States' global interest can be maintained only through changing the way it deals with China.

The Obama administration released positive signals in its relations with China, which have been interpreted as the United States showing its intention to change the traditional strategy of engagement and containment(遏制). As a matter of fact, the general direction of Sino-U.S. relations provides a foundation on which the United States can base its foreign policies and is more complicated than an adjustment in real conditions. Issues such as arms sales to Taiwan, Google censorship, RMB exchange rates as well as finger-pointing about economic responsibility show Washington still seems confused and inpatient about relations with China.

The relationship between China and the United States is the most important and complicated bilateral relationship in the world this century. The development of Sino-U.S. relations will affect world peace and stability, especially in the Asia-Pacific region. Ian Bremmer, an American political scientist specializing in U.S. foreign policy, said, "America and China will have more than ever to gain from closer political and commercial ties, and must take steps to avoid a Cold War, or worse."

In that circumstance, the United States needs both wisdom and determination to recognize and accept China, a country that is totally different from its own, as a power on the world stage.

1.The underlined word stance in the first paragraph probably means       .

       A.information         B.opinion               C.ignorance            D.criticism

2.Why does the US have to change the way it deals with China?

A.The US welcomes Chin’s entrance into the world arena.

B.The US hopes that China will get more powerful.

C.Only in this way can China meet all of its demands.

D.Only in this way can its global interest be maintained.

3.Ian Bremmer thinks both America and China will benefit more from       .

       A.a cold war.          B.keeping patient    C.better cooperation                         D.developing economy

4.Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?

A.Is it Clear that China has become world power?

B.Is US ready to recognize China as world power?

C.Is US still the most powerful country in the world?

D.Is Sino-U.S. relationship the most important and complicated in the world.

The wave of panic buying   风波

Many people in China rushed to store as much iodized salt(含碘食盐)as possible. This trend has led to grocery store shelves being ransacked over the past several days.

"I went looking for salt in the supermarket, stores and street markets, and it's all sold out."

It all stems from the rumor that iodized salt could help ward off radiation poisoning spreading from Japan's Fukushima Daiichi power plant. Consumers also worried that the nuclear plumes might spread to China by air and sea, contaminating food sources, including salt taken from the sea.

The wave of panic buying spread quickly throughout the country, driving up salt prices by five to ten fold(涨到五到十倍)in some cities.

Even regions rich in salt production, like Jiangxi Province face sudden shortages.

Local authorities have stepped in to stabilize the market. As well, state-owned salt companies have been urged to increase their supply.

Facing expanding market demand, distribution centers like this one in Beijing have taken extra measures to ensure they are well-prepared.

Wang Yun, Beijing Salt Industry Corporation, said, "Our storage reserves can guarantee a two-month supply for the Beijing market."

Measures are being taken to prevent panic buying. Health authorities and experts have begun informing the public that the rumor of salt's protection against radiation is "totally unfounded"(完全是无稽之谈). The public is being urged to be more rational when buying salt.

One would have to be a fool to overlook the importance of using positive thinking for you rather than snowing negative thinking to work against you. In recent years, research in psychopharmacology(精神药理学) has proved what many people have known over the centuries: a positive attitude is good for you, good for your health, good for your wealth, good for everything.

Researchers have found that a positive attitude produces a specific chemical reaction which makes people feel better, while negative thinking results in a reduction of hormone(荷尔蒙) and shuts down the immune system. This leads to illness and depression. Positive thoughts will make you feel better. Even if

you must begin by forcing yourself to be positive, it will become contagious and the positive thoughts will produce nice little chemicals and good feelings which will reinforce the positive thoughts.
