Dear Mr. Li

I'm glad to tell you that I have made great progress in my English study since I became a senior high school student.

When I started senior English in the beginning, I found it much more difficult than what we learned in junior school and I almost lose heart. Later, I realized the importance of English, so I got up early every morning, recited English words, listened to English tapes and did a lot of exercises. I also asked my teachers and classmates for better ways of learning English.

Now, I'm improving my English greatly. And I'm getting more and more interested in learning it. Thank you so much for your great help in your class.

Wish you all the best.

Yours,

Li Lei

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿In the US and Britain, the slogan around colleges was ¡°Save water. Shower with a friend.¡± Now, Wuhan University has come up with another system for the campus bathhouse. It charges students for the amount of time in a shower. Before entering the bathhouse, students pay for the amount of time they want in the shower with cash or their student ID card. The clock starts ticking the minute the tape is turned on. It pauses when a button is pressed for soap. An integrated circuit(IC) card reader at each tap shows the time. No money, no water. The benefits of the new system can be seen with the old system, which charged 1 Yuan for each person regardless of time in the shower. The university used about 320 tones of water daily under the old system, but only 160 tons now.

Many students use the new system but opinions on it are divided. Some students say it is bad because bathing had become a sort of race. Many people using it for the first time are not sure how long they need to shower. Some might be embarrassed if their time is up and they¡¯re still covered in soap. They have to ask the bathhouse worker to help them buy extra time.

¡°It¡¯s a flaw in the system that you can not buy extra time on the ID card,¡± said Ren, a freshman in Wuhan University. The university is also considering some students¡¯ suggestions that they be allowed to pay after they¡¯ve finished the shower. Not surprisingly, some are complaining about losing the hour shower. But many students say the move helps them develop a water-saving sense.

Without the time limits, most students tended to shower for 30 to an hour in the bathhouse.

Some even used the hot water to wash their clothes. ¡°In my experience, 10-20 minutes is enough,¡± said Dai Zhihua, a third-year student who usually takes 8 minutes.

A similar system has been installed in other universities. Shanghai Normal University introduced it at its Fengxiang Campus in September. The bathing fee there is 0.2 Yuan per minute. One male student responded by setting a record with a two-minute shower.

¡¾3¡¿Since the new system has performed, ______ of water can be saved.

A. the new operation can solve the water crisis.

B. The new operation can raise students¡¯ environmental awareness.

C. a similar operation has been set in other universities.

D. The university has saved a lot of water by using the new system.

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿I was born in Tuckahoe£¬Talbot Country£¬Maryland. I have no accurate(׼ȷµÄ)knowledge of my age£¬never having seen any record containing it. By far the larger part of the slaves know as little of their ages as horses know of theirs£¬and it is the wish of most masters within my knowledge to keep their slaves thus ignorant(²»ÖªÇéµÄ)£®I do not remember having ever met a slave who could tell of his birthday. They seldom come nearer to it than plantingtime£¬harvesting£¬springtime£¬or falltime. A lack of information concerning my own was a source of unhappiness to me even during childhood. The white children could tell their ages£¬but I could not tell. Why the same right ought to be taken away from me£¡I was not allowed to ask my master about it. He considered all such questions on the part of a slave improper and impolite. The nearest estimate(¹À¼Æ)I can live makes me now between twentyseven and twentyeight years of age. I come to this£¬from hearing my master say£¬some time during 1835£¬I was about seventeen years old. My mother was named Harriet Bailey. She was the daughter of Isaac and Betsey Bailey£¬both colored£¬and quite dark.

My father was a white man. The opinion was also whispered that my master was my father£»but of the correctness of this opinion£¬I know nothing and I have no means to know. My mother and I were separated when I was but an infant¡ªbefore I knew her as my mother. It is a common custom£¬in the part of Maryland from which I ran away£¬to part children from their mothers/span> at a very early age. Frequently£¬before the child has reached its twelfth month£¬its mother is taken from it£¬and hired out on some farm a considerable distance off£¬and the child is placed under the care of an older woman£¬too old for field labor.

Treat your audience with respect. They will appreciate your thoughtfulness.

Just remember: Be prepared. Know your subject, your audience, and the occasion. Be brief. ¡¾4¡¿ And be yourself. Let your personality come through so that you make person-to-person contact with your audience. If you follow these simple steps, you will see that you don¡¯t have to be afraid of public speaking.
