In order to learn a foreign language well, it is necessary to overcome the fear of making mistakes. If the basic goal of language use is communication, then mistakes are secondary considerations that may be dealt with gradually as realization of those mistakes increases. On the other hand, students should not ignore their mistakes. The language learner may observe how native speakers express themselves, and how native expressions differ from the way the learner might say them. For example, a Spanish speaker who has been saying “I do it” to express willingness to do something in the immediate future, could, by interacting with native speakers of English, observe that native speakers actually say “I'll do it”. The resulting difference can serve as a basis for the student to correct his way of using the present tense in English.

1This passage tells us that the present tense in English is ________.

    A. not used to express a desire to do something in the immediate future

    B. used with some verbs but not with others to express future plan

    C. basically the same in English as it is in Spanish

    D. not the most difficult problem for foreign students

2According to the passage, language learners can reduce the number of their mistakes by ________.

    A. asking native speakers for explanations

    B. reading good books in the foreign language

    C. comparing their speech with that of native speakers

    D. speaking without regard to native speakers

3According to the writer, foreign language students should not worry too much about making mistakes because ________.

    A. native speakers like foreign students who try to learn their language

    B. communication is the basic goal of language learning

    C. native speakers will ignore their mistakes

    D. everyone makes mistakes when trying to communicate in a strange language

4The author's main conclusion about the use of mistakes in foreign language learning is that ________.

    A. mistakes are not important in the course of learning a language

    B. learners are often very afraid of making mistakes

    C. making mistakes can help the learner discover the rules of the language

    D. native speakers often do not tell foreign language learners about their mistakes

In recent years, remote-sensing technologies have become ordinary in archaeological fieldwork (实
地考察). Such tools for excavation produce rapid results and cause no damage to archaeological sites.
They are highly accurate and usually cost
effective. Here are three of the modern archeologist's most trusted remote-sensing tools.
As the simplest of the remote-sensing techniques that archeologists use, aerial (空中的) photography
allows experts to see aspects of a site that may be invisible from the ground, such as the way in which
something such as a town, garden, or building is arranged and traces of old walls and roads. The
technique involves taking photographs with conventional cameras and filming from airplanes, helicopters,
hot-air balloons, or other airborne vehicles.
Geographic Information System (GIS) contains a large amount of field data archeologists typically
collect in and around excavation sites. While in the field, archeologists use GIS on their computers to
make and manage detailed site maps, and they can combine the results of remote-sensing tests with maps of the region created with the aid of Global Positioning System. Resulting maps sort the most
archeologically promising areas and display these sites three-dimensionally.
Ranging in size from small handheld models that one places against the ground to larger ones that one
drags across a site, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) devices use low-power radio waves to detect
changes underground. Unlike traditional radar, which broadcasts into the air and uses a dish to focus the
returned waves, GPR uses a small but sensitive receiver placed directly against the ground. Depending
on their needs, archeologists can adjust radio frequencies upward for shallow sites or downward for
deeper areas, though GPR devices produce the greatest definition (清晰度) when reading depths of
three feet or less.

1. We can learn from the text that the remote-sensing tools       .
A. will replace traditional archeological tools
B. are more difficult to use than traditional tools
C. have been widely and efficiently used in archeology
D. help archaeologists discover more archaeological sites

2. Aerial photography is helpful       .
A. in seeing what can't be seen on the ground
B. in analyzing how old an archaeological site is
C. in reflecting the changes of an archaeological site
D. in taking large-sized photos of an archaeological site

3. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) devices are different from traditional radar in that       .
A. their sizes are completely different
B. traditional radar uses low-power radio waves
C. the length of waves they send out is different
D. GPR devices can detect changes underground

4. Archeologists can get a detailed site map by       .
A. aerial photography
B. Geographic Information System
C. Global Positioning System
D. Ground Penetrating Radar

In America, drivers' education is part of the regular high school curriculum. Every student in his or her
second year of high school is required to take a class in driver's education. However, unlike other courses, it is not given during the regular school year. Instead it is a summer course.
The course is divided into two parts: class time for learning laws and regulations and driving time to
practice driving. Class time is not unlike any other class. The students have a text from which they study the basic laws they must know to pass the written driving test that is given to anyone wanting to get a driver's
license(驾照).
Driving time is a chance for the students to get behind the wheel(steering wheel) and practice starting,
steering(驾驶), backing up, parking, switching lanes, turning corners, and all the other maneuvers(操作)
required to drive a car. Each student is required to drive a total of six hours. The students and the
instructor go out driving for two-hour blocks of time. Thus, each student gets half an hour driving time
per outing. The instructor and "driver" sit in the front seats and the other three students sit in the back.
Drivers Ed cars are unlike other cars in which they have two sets of brakes(刹车), one on the driver's
side and one on the other side where the instructor sits. Thus, if the student driver should run into
difficulties the instructor can take over. The car also has another special feature. On the top of the car is a
sign that reads: STUDENT DRIVER. That lets nearby drivers know that they should use extra caution
(谨慎)because the student driver is a beginning driver, not very experienced and prone to(易于…的)
driving slowly.
After the student has passed the driver's education course and reached the appropriate(适当的)age to drive(this age differs in every state but in most cases the person must be 16 years old), they can go to a
designated(指定的)state office to take their driver's test, which is made up of an eye examination, a
written test, and a road test. The person must pass all the three tests in order to be given a driver's license. If the person did well in his or her driver's education class, he or she will pass the test with flying colors a
nd get a driver's license.
1. In America, the driver's course mentioned above is ________.
A. considered as part of the advanced education
B. given to anyone wanting to get a driver's license
C. carried on at the same time as other courses
D. required of all the students of Grade 2 in high schools
2. To prevent accidents, a driver's ED car ________.
A. has a sign inside it
B. has two sets of brakes
C. is big enough to hold five persons
D. can't run very fast
3. We can infer that the students are required to ________ in their whole driving practice.
A. go out driving for twelve times
B. spend at least six hours driving
C. drive for two-hour blocks of time
D. get half an hour driving
4. Which of the following does not agree with the requirements for the students wanting to get their driver's license?
A. They must be 16 years of age.
B. They should go to have their driver's course.
C. They must have their eyes examined.
D.They ought to do well in their driver's course.
5. In the last sentence, "with flying colors" means _________.
A. happily
B. successfully
C. colorfully
D. quickly

"In only six days I lost seven pounds of weight."
"Two full inches in the first three days!"
These are the kinds of statements used in magazine, newspaper, radio and television ads, promising new
shapes and new looks to those who buy the medicine or the device. The promoters of products say they
can shape the legs, slim the face, smooth wrinkles,or in some other way to add to beauty or desirability.
Often such products are nothing more than moneymaking things for their promoters. The results they
produce are questionable, and some are dangerous to health.
To understand how these products can be legally promoted to the public,it is necessary to understand
something of the laws covering their regulation. If the product is a drug,FDA(Food and Drug
Administration)can require proof under the Food,Drug, and Cosmetic Act that is safe and effective before
it is put on the market. But if the product is a device,FDA has no authority to require premarketing proof
of safety or effectiveness. If a product already on the market is a danger to health,FDA can request the
producer or distributor to remove it from the market voluntarily,or it can take legal action, including
seizure(查封)of the product.
One notable case a few years ago involved an electrical device called the Relaxacisor, which had been
sold for reducing the waistline. The Relaxacisor produced electrical shocks to the body through contact
pads.FDA took legal action against the distributor to stop the sale of the device on the grounds that it
was dangerous to health and life.
Obviously, most of the devices on the market have never been the subject of court proceedings(法律

In one of the strongest indications of the power of the mind to influence the body, a growing
collection of evidence finds that people who are depressed have a greatly higher risk of developing
heart disease.
In a study of almost 3,000 men and 5,000 women, depressed men were 70 per cent more likely
to develop coronary (心脏的) heart disease than those who weren't depressed. While depressed
women were just 12 per cent more likely to develop heart disease, those who were severely depressed
were 78 per cent more likely. In fact, a 1998 study found that women who are depressed have a risk
of dying from heart disease equal to that of women who smoke or who have high blood pressure.
The link works the other way around, too: While about 1 in 20 American adults experience major
depression in a given year, that number jumps to about one in three among those who have survived a
heart attack.
The more severe the depression, the more dangerous it is to your health. But some studies suggest
that even mild depression, including feelings of hopelessness experienced over many years, may damage
the heart. Other studies suggest depression may affect how well heart disease medications work.
Researchers aren't sure what the connection between depression and heart disease is, but theories
exist. One is that people who are depressed tend not to take very good care of themselves. They're
more likely to eat high-fat, high-calorie "comfort" foods, less likely to exercise, and more likely to
smoke. But beyond lifestyle, there is probably also a physiological link between depression and heart
disease. Recent studies found that people with severe, depression tended to have a lack of heart-healthy 0-3 fatty acids. People who are depressed also often have high levels of stress hormones (荷尔蒙).
These keep the body primed for fight or flight, raising blood pressure and causing the heart to beat faster,
all of which put additional stress on coronary arteries (动脉) and prevent the body's natural healing
mechanisms from working properly.
A whole branch of medicine is devoted to the complex links between mental health, the nervous
system, the hormone system and so on. This science is gradually sorting out how the mind-body
connection affects us, or defenses against heart disease.
Generally, an estimated 10 per cent of American adults experience some form of depression every year.
Although available treatments can ease symptoms (症状) in more than 80 per cent of people treated, less
than half of those with depression get the help they need.
1. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A. Depression -Heart Disease Risk Factor.
B. Heart Disease -Health Killer.
C. Depression - Mental Health Enemy.
D. Heart Disease - Depression Factor.
2. Which statement is NOT true according to the passage?
A. With high blood pressure, depression is another potential risk to women's health.
B. Depression, which is mild, can possibly cause damage to your health.
C. Most people who experience depression get treated as they should be.
D. Depression may have some influence on the function of heart disease medication.
3. According to the passage, the possible connections between heart disease and depression
    are the following EXCEPT ______
A. depressed ones tend to eat high-fat and high-calories foods, which leads to physical damage to heart
B. severe heart disease may cause people to feel hopeless and depressed
C. depression may result in the lack of some kind of acids, which probably affects the working of
      people's heart
D. people with depression often have a high level of stress hormones, maybe, which will put extra
    pressure on one s heart
4. We can infer from the passage that ______.
A. more researches will be done to find the certain links between heart disease and depression
B. the percentage of adults with depression is higher than that of depressed adults with heart disease
C. one's lifestyle has relatively little relationship with one's mental health
D. those with depression have a higher risk of developing heart disease
