Two weeks before Christmas, two little girls were walking down the street1they saw old Harry, who was on his knees pulling weeds around a tree.

He wore a pair of worn gloves. His fingers were sticking out2the ends, blue from the cold. They stopped to talk to him.

Harry told them he3(get) the yard in shape as a Christmas gift for his mother, who had died several years before. “My mother was all I had. She loved her yard and trees, so I do this for her every Christmas.”

His words touched the girls and soon they _4_ (join) him, pulling weeds. When they finished, Harry pressed a coin into each of their hands. “I wish I could pay you more, but that's all I've got right now” he said.

The girls had often passed his house, and they remembered that it had always been5poor condition. No decorations to add cheeriness were anywhere in sight.

As they walked on, the coin in one little girl's hand seemed to burn a hole of6(guilty). The next day she called her friends7they agreed to put their coins in a jar marked “Harry's Christmas Gift”. Then they began to seek out small jobs to earn more. Every coin they earned went into the jar.

Finally, they had enough8(buy) new gloves. On Christmas Eve they were on Harry's doorstep singing carols. They presented him with the gloves. With9(tremble) hands, he held the gloves to his face and wept. No doubt he once again felt _10_ love of others as the girls reached out to him.

【题目】Every time you go to the supermarket you come away with your purchases packed in plastic bags. But wouldn’t it be kinder to the environment if you asked for paper bags instead?

The answer is not as easy as it might seem. Environmentalists say there are drawbacks to using both plastic bags and paper bags.

80 percent of groceries in the US are packed in plastic bags and the numbers are becoming huge. Consumers use between 500 billion and 1 trillion plastic bags per year worldwide.

Some experts believe that all these bags harm the environment. Plastic takes hundreds of years to break down and, as it does so, poisonous materials are released into the water and soil.

Further damage is caused if plastic bags enter the sea. For example, endangered sea turtles cannot tell the bags from jellyfish, their main source of food, and often choke on them.

However, this kind of bag does have its advantages.

Paper bags use more energy and create more waste than plastic bags. Plastic bags require 40 percent less energy to produce and cause 70 percent less air pollution. They also release as much as 94 percent less waste into the water than paper ones do.

But paper bags do break down more quickly than plastic bags. They don’t endanger wildlife, either.

So what should we do? One possible solution would be to use biodegradable plastic bags. “Biodegradable” means that the bags break down naturally just like a piece of banana peel when it is left outside.

But until biodegradable technology improves, it might be easier to pack things you buy in reusable cloth bags.

1Compared to paper bags, plastic bags ______.

A. produce 6 percent more waste

B. can be made biodegradable more easily

C. can be used as a source of food

D. save 40 percent of the energy

2By saying “The answer is not as easy as it might seem,” (in paragraph 2) the writer means _____.

A. biodegradable plastic bags can compete with paper

B. paper bags seem to be kind to environment

C. it’s difficult to say whether plastic or paper bags are better for the environment

3What does the author suggest people use at the present time?

A. Paper bags B. Plastic bags

C. Biodegradable plastic bags. D. Cloth bags.

【题目】Across the United States, universities and colleges have been looking to become more sustainable (可持续发展的) and more than 600 schools have already planned to become eco-friendly. The EcoDorm, home to 36 students at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, was designed to be sustainable from top to bottom, or in this case, from its rainwater-collection system to its garden. The dormitory is bringing new meaning to the concept of living “green” at college.

At Warren Wilson College, a biological science school with fewer than 1,000 students, the sustainability drive came from the student body. The EcoDorm concept was presented ten years ago by two students; a planning committee firstly suggested using building materials like corncob. Although the architects disagreed with the idea, they came up with other creative solutions: Wood siding was taken from the trees grown in the school yard that were suffering from a disease, and rainwater was collected in an old railway car and pumped back into the house to clean the toilets.

All in all, the dorm uses nearly two-thirds less electricity than a similar-sized traditional building world. But even the most sustainable homes need continued efforts from its livers. And in the case of EcoDorm, students live by their words. Most also take advantage of the dorm’s bio-garden, planting and harvesting fruits and vegetables. “I didn’t have to worry about paper towels being wasted or feel bad about drying my clothes outside,” Jeremy Lekich, the dorm’s gardener, said. “Basically, it has made my life easier.”

【3】What is the advantage of the EcoDorm?

A. It helps students to enjoy life at college.

B. It saves a lot of money and energy for the college.

C. It makes students study harder.

D. It brings new energy to the college.

【4】What can be inferred from the text?

A. A long-term development calls for students’ efforts.

B. Students’ ideas should be encouraged at college.

C. Green living is a new trend at American colleges.

D. Students can learn to protect the environment through practice.
