Last month, James Connolly, a junior at the University of Massachusetts, stood in front of a local
police station wearing a toga (长袍) as punishment.
His crime? He was charged with underage drinking, illegal possession of alcohol and too much noise
while holding a party.
This shaming punishment has increased in the US in recent years, mostly imposed (强加) by local
judges for less-serious crimes, such as drunk driving and theft.
They believe shame is the best petty crime deterrent (威慑). For example, in Tennessee, Judge James McKenzie has made shoplifters stand outside Wal-Mart with signs that read, "I am a thief put here by
order of Judge McKenzie."
"Alternative punishments like community service and fines don't convey moral condemnation of the
criminal," said Dan Kahan, a University of Chicago Law School professor, in an article published on the
university's website. "They aren't shameful enough."
Supporters of shaming punishment argue that public shaming is a good way of expressing community
values. Some judges say shamed offenders seldom repeat their crimes.
Others aren't so sure. "There is little evidence to suggest that shaming punishments are successful in
preventing people from committing specific crimes. And a shamed criminal may face a hard battle to
regain trust in society," said Hosmanek. "So, a shaming punishment may force the offender into more
crimes to support himself."

C. Holding a sign in public that announces one’s own crime.
D. Being forced to work for the community without being paid.

It is unbelievable how popular English is in Venezuela (委内瑞拉). Now we have a kind of language mixture between English and Spanish.

In the Venezuelans' daily conversations, they often use English words with Spanish verb endings. For example, if they send a fax, they use the word faxear, or if they have to click on the screen of their computer, they say clickear.

Also, they use simple English words in some Spanish sentences. You might hear someone say,“Voy a comprar unos jeans in el mall”which means“I'm going to buy some jeans in the mall,”or“Okey, vamos”which means“OK, let's go.”

In addition, you see English names everywhere for restaurants--Crystal Ranch, stores--Area Company, gymnasiums--Sport Center, Althletic Center, malls--The Country, and night clubs--Studio Fifty Four. In Caracas(加拉加斯), there is very fashionable neighborhood named Las Merce des, where each street has an American name like New York or Fifth Avenue. Therefore, when you go shopping, you can see signs in English in the windows of stores, such as On Sale.

"S. H.E. is going to sing at the CCTV annual Spring Festival Evening Party, is that true?" cried out Peng Weiye, a Senior 2 girl in Shanghai and die-hard S. H.E. fan.

After checking it on the Internet, Peng quickly phoned friends to spread the news. For fans like her, S. H. E. ’s performance is perhaps the only part of the old fashioned evening to get excited about.

The Taiwanese band is made up of Selina, Hebe and Ella. Their name comes from the first letter of each of the singers' English names.

Last week S. H. E. announced they would perform in Las Vegas, US, over Christmas and then in Guangzhou on January 15.

At their Shanghai show on October 30, hundreds of parents waited outside the Hongkou Stadium. Inside, thousands of teenagers sang, cried and shouted as the band performed.

"I love their music, healthy image and everything related to them. Thank God that, although my parents don't understand why I love them so much, they still bought me a ticket for that show," said Peng about the Shanghai performance.

It is not just on the mainland that the three girls have made audiences much excited. In the past year the band has passed through Taiwan, Hong Kong and even Singapore and Malaysia.

When the three high school girls entered a singing contest in Taiwan in 2000, none of them ever dreamed of being a superstar. "We had never met before, and we didn't talk at all at the beginning," recalled Ella.

When asked about the secret of their success, she said, "Our average looks and not-so-expensive clothes keep us close to our fans. We are happy to be the girls next door, your singing sisters."

"It's really a magical journey, from day-dreaming high school girls to singers performing on the same stage as our idols(偶像). Nothing but magical," she said.

NEW YORK- Microsoft is pulling out of the International Consumer Electronics Show(CES), the
largest trade show in the Americas. It's joining Apple in saying that it prefers to put on its own events
when the time is right to show off its products.
Microsoft said the next show, to be held Jan.9, 2012 in Las Vegas, will be the last show at which it
has a booth or the CEO delivers the customary kick-off speech.
Company founder Bill Gates delivered keynote speeches at the show for 11 straight years. Current
CEO Steve Ballmer has delivered the speech for the past three shows and will present his last next
month.
The software company has been one of the biggest U.S. supporters of the annual event, which
gathered nearly 150,000 people this year. Originally focused on living-room electronics, the show has
become the big annual U.S. event for all consumer technology after the demise of big computer-focused
shows such as Comdex.
Microsoft says it will continue to use CES as a place to connect to customers, but it won't have a
booth because its product milestones don't align with the show's January timing.
At the upcoming show, Ballmer is scheduled to speak about the Windows 8 operating system. But the
software isn't expected to be ready until late 2012, so computer makers won't have any real Windows 8
products at the show.
"They're not cooked yet. So he's going to be stuck trying to present a bunch of stuff that will be
months away from being ready," said technology industry analyst Rob Enderle.
Apple doesn't participate in trade shows at all after pulling out of the Macworld Conference & Expo
after 2009.
The Consumer Electronics Association, which organizes CES, said it has tremendous demand for
invitations to hold keynote speeches, and it has already received feelers from companies that want to rent
for the 2013 show the space where Microsoft usually has its booth.

1. Which of the following statement is NOT TRUE?
A. CES is the largest trade show in the USA.
B. Microsoft won't attend CES in 2012.
C. CES is originally focused on living-room electronics.
D. CES is held in January every year.
2. Why can't people buy windows 8 operating system at the CES show?
A. Because the product hasn't been ready.
B. Because Apple will take part in the show.
C. Because Microsoft has its own schedule to show the product.
D. Because Ballmer has taken the place of Bill Gates in the company.
3. What is Microsoft's attitude to CES?
A. It has done no good to their products.
B. It will have a booth in CES to show off their products every year.
C. It will continue to use CES as a place to connect to customers.
D. It won't say anything about Windows 8 operating system in CES.
4. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Apple has participated in CES since 2009.
B. CES will attract more companies to hold speeches.
C. Microsoft has a terrible connection with CES.
D.  Microsoft will pull out of CES after 2012.
