Are you a man or a mouse? When people ask this question they want to know if you think you are a brave person or a coward. But you will never really know the answer to that question until you are tested in real life. Some people think they are brave, but when they come face to face with real danger, they act like cowards. Other people think of themselves as cowardly, but when they meet danger, they act like heroes.

Lenny Skutnik had always thought of himself as a nervous person. He got worried before examinations. He worried about his job and his health. All he wanted in life was to be safe and healthy. Then, on 15th January 1982, a plane crashed into the Potomac River in Washington. Lenny went to the river to see what was happening. Then he saw a woman in the ice-cold water. Suddenly Lenny did not feel afraid. He kept very calm and did a very courageous thing. He jumped into the Potomac, swam to the woman, and kept her head above the water. Seventyeight people died that day. Thanks to Lenny Skutnik, it was not seventy-nine.

When you are in a very dangerous situation and feel afraid, the body automatically produces a chemical in the blood. This chemical is called adrenalin(副肾素). With adrenalin in the blood system, you actually feel stronger and are ready to fight or run away. However, when you are absolutely terrified, the body can produce too much adrenalin. When this happens, the muscles become very hard and you find that you cannot move at all. You are then paralysed with fear. That is why, when we are very frightened, we sometimes say that we are ‘petrified’. This word comes from the Greek word‘petros’which means‘stone’. We are so frightened we have become like stone.

1.According to the writer’s opinion, a brave person can be judged by ________.

A.his words
B.his thought
C.his action

2.From what Lenny did , we can conclude that ________.

[ ]

A.Lenny had a good chance

B.Lenny liked swimming

C.Lenny was brave

D.Lenny wanted to be a hero

3.In great danger, a hero always keeps ________.

[ ]

A.nervous
B.worried
C.calm
D.disappointed

4.Adrenalin in our body is ________.

[ ]

A.harmful
B.useless
C.changeable
D.dangerous

5.If a person’s body produces too much adrenalin, he will ________.

[ ]

A good friend of mine lives with six hundred wild animals on a Greek island.Ever since he left school(where I first knew him)he has traveled all over the world collecting animals for his very own zoo.He hoped to collect two examples of every kind of animal on his island, like Noah before the Great Flood. But the flood that my friend was afraid of, was a flood not of water, but of people.I think you have heard of my friend; he writes books about his travels, and about the wild and wonderful animals that he collects. The money from the books helps to pay for all the food that these animals eat.

(15小题,每题2分,满分30)

Cheating can happen in a lot of different ways. When people cheat, it’s not fair to other people, like the kids who studied for the test or who were the true winners of a game.

Many people like the action of cheating. It makes difficult things seem easy, like getting all the right answers on the test. But it doesn’t solve the problem of not knowing the material and it won’t help on the next test --- unless the person cheats again.

Some people lose respect for cheaters and think less of them. The cheaters themselves may feel bad because they know they are not really earning that good grade. And, if they get caught cheating, they will be in trouble at school, and maybe at home, too.

Some kids cheat because they’re busy or lazy and they want to get good grades without spending the time studying. Other kids might feel like they can’t pass the test without cheating. Even when there seems to be a “good reason” for cheating, cheating isn’t a good idea.

If you were sick or upset about something the night before and couldn’t study, it would be better to talk with the teacher about this. And if you don’t have enough time to study for a test because of swim practice, you need to talk with your parents about how to balance swimming and school.

A kid who thinks cheating is the only way to pass a test needs to talk with the teacher and his or her parents so they can find some solutions(解决办法) together. Talking about these problems and working them out will feel better than cheating.

Think of some of your favorite singers. When you listen ,they can make you happy or sad , peaceful
or angry. They can make you relax or want to get up and dance.Gifted singers have the power to affect
us in many ways-emotionally, physically and mentally.
But becoming a great singer isn’t as easy as listening to one.It takes practice , devotion and strong
lungs ! Just ask the wellknown American opera( 歌剧)star Carol Vaness.
At the Metropolitan Opera in New York City where she often sings, Carol’s voice must be loud
enough to be heard  by  four thousand people. It must reach every person  in  the theater , without a
microphone ,even when she’s singing softly. The reason Carol can project her voice that far is the way
she breathes.
“When you breathe,  it’s like a swimmer taking a deep breath before going underwater ,” Carol
explains.“You have to take a lot of air into your lungs.”
According to Carol, the main difference between pop singing and opera is “how you breathe, how
much air you take in,  and how you control it coming out.Regular singing is more like speaking, and
it’s a lot softer. When I sing for children, they’re often surprised by how the vibrations strike their ears-like waves on a beach,”Carol says.“In opera,  the air doesn’t just go out of your mouth-it vibrates in your
chest,  the way a guitar vibrates when it’s played.”
Ever since she started piano lessons at the age of ten,  Carol has loved music. As she got older, she
decided to become a music teacher. When she went to college,  she took singing lessons as part of her
studies. Her voice teacher discovered that nineteenyearold Carol had an exceptionally beautiful soprano
voice-the highest singing voice for women.
Carol decided to make opera her goal, not only because she loved to sing but also because she loved
the drama.Opera is a play in which the characters sing the words instead of speaking them. The stories of
opera can be tragic or comical. They can be personal stories about two people falling in love or grand
stories about kings and queens who lived long ago.As the characters in an opera sing, the emotions(情感)
expressed by words and music come to life.
Today,  Carol performs throughout the United States and Europe and she has sung for almost twenty
years. But she has never forgotten where she started singing in the first palace.“Put_your_heart_into_your_
singing and enjoy it,”says Carol, “because singing is a great joy. That’s why I sing.In fact, that’s why
everybody sings.”
1.According to the passage,  the Metropolitan Opera in New York City  ________.
A.is a fivestory building
B.can seat 4, 000 people
C.has no microphones in it
D.can project the singer’s voice
2.What is the best title for this passage?
A.Opera Singing and Pop Singing
B.The Way An Opera Star Sings
C.An Opera Star
D.Singing without A Microphone
3.Which statement is TRUE?
A.A pop singer’s lungs are usually stronger than those of an opera singer’s.
B.The author has the idea that opera singing is more like speaking.
C.A pop singer takes in much more air than an opera singer when singing.

Think about the different ways that people use the wind. You can use it to fly a kite or to sail a boat.
Wind is one of our cleanest and richest power sources(来源) as well as one of the oldest. Evidence shows that windmills(风车)began to be used in ancient Iran back in the seventh century BC. They were first
introduced to Europe during the 1100s, when armies returned from the Middle East with knowledge of
using wind power.
For many centuries, people used windmills to grind(磨碎)wheat into flour or pump water from deep
underground. When electricity was discovered in the late 1800s. people living in remote areas began to use them to produce electricity. This allowed them to have electric lights and radio. However, by the1940s
when electricity was available to people in almost all areas of the United States, windmills were rarely
used.
During the 1970s,people started becoming concerned about the pollution that is created when coal and gas are burned to produce electricity .People also realized that the supply of coal and gas would not last
forever .Then, wind was rediscovered ,though it means higher costs. Today ,there is a global movement to supply more and more of our electricity through the use of wind.

A. were invented by European armies
B. have a history of more than 2,800 years

2. What was a new use for wind power in the late 19th century?
A. Sailing a boat.

A. wind power is cleaner
B. it is one of the oldest power sources
C. it was cheaper to create energy from wind
D. the supply of coal and gas failed to meet needs
