第二节: 阅读表达

Fear and pain are two of the most useful things that human beings and animals have, if they are properly used. If fire did not hurt when it burnt, children would play with it until their hands were burnt away. Similarly, if pain existed but fear didn’t, a child would burn himself again and again, because fear would not warn himself to keep away from the fire that had burnt himself before. A really fearless soldier is not good soldier because he will soon be killed; and a dead soldier is of no use to his army. Fear and pain are therefore two guards without which human beings and animals might soon die out.

1)        In our first sentence, we suggested that fear should be properly used. If, for example, you never go out of your house because of the danger of being knocked down and killed in the street by a car, you are letting fear rule you too much. Even in your house you are not absolutely safe. A plane may crash on your house, or you may get cancer!

2)        The important thing is not to let fear rule you, but to use fear as your servant and guide instead. Fear will warn you of dangers; then you have to decide what action to take.

3)        In many cases, you can take quick and successful action to avoid the danger. For example, you see a car coming straight towards you. Fear warns you, then you jump out of the way, and all is well.

4)        In some case, however, you decide that there is nothing that you can do to ________. For example, you can’t prevent a plane crashing onto your house. In this case, fear is no longer of any use, and you have to try to overcome it.

第二节   阅读表达:每题2分,共10分。

.阅读下面的短文,并根据短文后的要求答题(请注意问题后的词数要求。答案写在答卷纸上

Learning to save money when you're young is an important lesson. All good lessons and habits begin early, and saving is a skill that everyone needs. Many people—adults included—do not have a good sense of saving for the long run.

I have been lucky to learn this lesson early because I have had a grass-cutting business since I was 10 years old. Of the money I make I spend about 10 percent and save the other 90.

Making sure you save and don't spend too much is a good way to build up wealth. I have put my earnings in a bank. Many teens I know spend all the money they earn so it never has a chance to grow. Young people should realize that their teenage years are a great time to begin saving.

At high school many parents pay for almost everything, so your expenses can be small. If you have a job, you should have fun with some of the money. But you should also save some so that it will grow. Then you can begin planning for your future. When you spend money, you not only lose that money, but also lose the interest you could have earned by saving it.

After high school, college is expensive and then "real" life begins, with expenses such as food and rent. If you can hold onto a good percentage of the money you earn as a teen, going to college and buying a house will be much easier. ________________, the more time the money has to grow. If you are in your thirties without any savings, you will always have to struggle. The earlier you begin saving, the easier it is to create a nest egg.

Later in life it can be hard to start saving because general costs of living are more expensive and you may only have enough to pay your bills. If you want to buy a house and have a family, you need money to start with, which comes from saving.

Many say money cannot make you happy, and this is true. But money can help you to lead a secure life.

Saving early will mean you will have to work for fewer years when you are older. It will also allow you to spend time doing the things that you want to do.

In addition to this, it will mean you can live the way you want to without worrying.

第二节 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

In the United States, friends can be close, constant, intense, generous, and real, yet fade away m a short time if circumstances change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship where it left out and are delighted.

In the States ,you can feel free to visit people' s homes , share their holidays, enjoy their lives without fear that you are taking on a lasting obligation (负担). Do not hesitate to accept hospitality (热情款待) because you can't give it in return. No one will expect you to do so for they know you are, far from home. Americans will enjoy welcoming you and be pleased if you accept their hospitality easily.

Once you arrive there, the welcome will be full, warm and real. Most visitors find themselves readily invited into many homes there. In some countries it is considered inhospitable to entertain (招待) at home, offering what is felt as only home-cooked food, not “doing something for your guest". It is felt that restaurant entertaining shows more respect and welcome. Or for other different reasons,  such as crowded space, language difficulties, or family custom, outsiders are not invited into homes.

In the United States, both methods are used, but it is often considered more friendly to invite a person to one's home than to go  to a public place, except in purely business relationships. So, if your host or hostess_________, do not feel that you are being shown inferior ( 差的,低级的) treatment.

Don' t feel neglected ( 被轻视的 ) if you do not find flowers awaiting you in your hotel room, either. Flowers are very expensive there, hotel delivery is uncertain, arrival times are delayed, changed, or canceled ( 取消 ) —so flowers are not customarily sent as a welcoming touch. Please do not feel unwanted! Outward signs vary in different lands, the inward welcome is what matters, and this will be real.

第二节 阅读表达(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)

【1】If you are worried about things and are under a lot of stress at work or school, then you are probably not sleeping well. Worry can keep you awake, tossing and turning in bed until the early hours of the morning when you eventually fall asleep. When you wake up, you don’t feel refreshed, but tired and worn out and unable to face a new day.

【2】Dr Henry Winkle, in a recent newspaper article entitled Stress and Sleep, indicates that ____________. Dr Winkle says, “The more we worry, the less we sleep, the more we are unable to deal with stress. If we can find a way to get a good night’s sleep,” he adds, “we can often find the energy to deal with what’s worrying us.”

【3】So, what is a good night’s sleep? Research shows that the amount of sleep which people need in order to keep healthy varies a lot. Seven hours is about the average amount, though strangely enough, sleeping longer often gives you a headache instead of making you feel more refreshed.

【4】Dr Winkle believes that preparing for sleeping is important. People who work late should try to give themselves a short break and do something restful before going to bed. This could be watching TV or listening to music. Doing some exercise earlier in the day should help you to feel physically as well as mentally tired. A bedtime drink can also help, but coffee or tea should be avoided as they contain caffeine and will keep you awake. “When you put the light out, ” Dr Winkle says, “Concentrate on relaxing your muscles, working slowly up from your feet, and you’ll asleep before you know it.”
