【题目】I ran into a local store today to pick up a few things. With an important meeting to attend, I was in a hurry , so I didn’t take a cart (手推车) on my way inside. As I walked between the shelves in the store, I passed by a young couple and their baby. I continued going through the store, picked up a few items I needed and ended up standing behind this couple in the checkout line.
While waiting, I noticed that the young father was holding his money tightly and nervously. The young mother was carrying a baby in her arms and asked the cashier (收银员) for a job application.
When the total was rung up, they had to pick items out of their cart because they didn’t have enough money. But all their items were basic necessities(必需品) that they needed most. It just broke my heart to watch the couple try to think about what they could do without. However, they were able to whittle down their items and paid the bill with the money that they had.
After they left, I quietly asked the cashier to add those items to mine. The cashier rang everything up, and then got me a shopping cart. We put in their items and I hurried over to their car. “This is for you,” I told them.
The young father just looked at me with such appreciation and thanked me. I will never forget the expression in his eyes. As I was getting into my car, they drove over. The young mother said, “Miss, thank you so much.”
Tears welled up in my eyes---as they are again now, while I write this. “You are so welcome. Pay it forward some day,” I replied.

【题目】七选五阅读
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Do You Have the Time? In English, this question has two different meanings. The first one is “Do you know what time it is?” While commonly, this is less frequently used than the simpler question with the same meaning “What time is it?” The other is “Do you have the time (e.g. to do this or that)?” This is a very commonly asked question, whether in American, British, or Australian English. I think the response “I don’t have the time” is most commonly used year after year. 【1】
Think about how often you (and I) have used this as an explanation of why we couldn’t do something, take on a new task, help someone, visit someone, etc. Sometimes it’s a statement of fact, and sometimes it’s just an excuse. 【2】 However, deep down we each have a pretty clear idea of the difference. In practical terms, the lack of available time seems to be and often is a true reason for why we cannot take something on. 【3】 “I just don’t have the time” is too often an escape. Once we get to a certain age, when we are generally considered to be grown-ups, we are expected to have developed time management skills. In many instances, “I don’t have the time” has the same meaning as “I am not willing to make the time”. Sure, we’re all busy, but in the end, it’s a matter of which is more important.
【4】 It doesn’t grow on trees or fall from the sky like raindrops. You make the time as well as most of the related decisions about what is important. 【5】 If you don’t decide on the use of your time, the decision will be taken away from you. It’s really up to us to decide on how to balance and manage time, and that’s a challenge.
A. No one gives you the time.
B. After all, it’s so convenient as an excuse.
C. The key is what criteria you rely on to make decisions.
D. The distinction here between them is blurry (模糊不清的) and subjective.
E. Be aware it’s the world’s most common excuse, whether you speak it out or not.
F. But it does mean we need to develop a clear approach to time management.
G. Actually if we try to rearrange our time, or make a sacrifice, we can make it.

After the children returned to the classroom, the teacher opened their eggs one by one, 【6】 (encourage) each child to explain the meaning of “new life” in his or her egg. The first opened egg contained a flower. In another was a butterfly. 【7】 the teacher opened the last egg, it was empty. “That’s stupid. Whose is it?” said someone. 【题目】Fear may be felt in the heart as well as in the head, according to a study that has found a link between the cycles of a beating heart and the chance of someone feeling fear.
Tests on healthy volunteers found that they were more likely to feel a sense of fear at the moment when their hearts are contracting and pumping blood around their bodies, compared with the point when the heartbeat is relaxed. Scientists say the results suggest that the heart is able to influence how the brain responds to a fearful event, depending on which point it is at in its regular cycle of contraction and relaxation.
Sarah Garfinkel at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School said:“Our study shows for the first time that the way in which we deal with fear is different depending on when we see fearful pictures in relation to our heart.”
The study tested 20 healthy volunteers on their reactions to fear as they were shown pictures of fearful faces. Dr Garfinkel said, “The study showed that fearful faces are better noticed when the heart is pumping than when it is relaxed. Thus, our hearts can also affect what we see and what we don't see—and guide whether we see fear.”
To further understand this relationship, the scientists also used a brain scanner(扫描仪)to show how the brain influences the way the heart changes a person's feeling of fear.
“We have found an important mechanism by which the heart and brain ‘speak’ to each other to change our feelings and reduce fear,”Dr Garfinkel said.
“We hope that by increasing our understanding about how fear is dealt with and ways that it could be reduced, we may be able to develop more successful treatments for anxiety disorders, and also for those who may be suffering from serious stress disorder.”
【1】What is the finding of the study? ________.
A. Fear is a result of one's relaxed heartbeat.
B. One's heart affects how he feels fear.
C. Fear has something to do with one's health.
D. One's fast heartbeats are likely to cause fear.
【2】The study was carried out by analyzing ________.
A. volunteers' heartbeats when they saw terrible pictures
B. the time volunteers saw fearful pictures and their health conditions
C. volunteers' reactions to horrible pictures and data from their brain scans
D. different pictures shown to volunteers and their heart-brain communication
【3】Which of the following is closest in meaning to “mechanism” in Paragraph 6?
A. order B. treatment C. machine D. system
【4】This study may contribute to ________.
A. treating anxiety and stress better
B. explaining the cycle of fear and anxiety
C. finding the key to the heart-brain communication
D. understanding different fears in our hearts and heads

【题目】In the fall of 1985, I was a bright-eyed girl heading off to Howard University, aiming at a legal career and dreaming of sitting on a Supreme Court bench somewhere. Twenty--one years later I am still a bright-eyed dreamer and one with quite a different tale to tell.
My grandma, an amazing woman, graduated from college at the age of 65. She was the first in our family to reach that goal. But one year after I started college, she developed cancer. I made the choice to withdraw from college to care for her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait.
Then I got married with another dream: building my family with a combination of adopted and biological children. In 1999, we adopted our first son. To lay eyes on him was fantastic—and very emotional. A year later came our second adopted boy. Then followed son No.3. In 2003, I gave birth to another boy.
You can imagine how fully occupied I became, raising four boys under the age of 8! Our home was a complete zoo—a joyous zoo. Not surprising, I never did make it back to college fulltime. But I never gave up on the dream either. I had only one choice: to find a way. That meant taking as few as one class each semester.
The hardest part was feeling guilty about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to quit, but I knew I should set an example for them to follow through the rest of their lives.
In 2007, I graduated from the University of North Carolina. It took me over 21 years to get my college degree!
I am not special, just single-minded. It always struck me that when you’re looking at a big challenge from the outside it looks huge, but when you’re in the midst of it, it just seems normal. Everything you want won’t arrive in your life on one day. It’s a process. Remember: little steps add up to big dreams.
【1】Why did the author quit school in her second year of college?
A. She suffered from a serious illness.
C. She wanted to study by herself.
B. She decided to look after her grandma.
D. She fell in love and got married.
【2】What can we learn about the author from Paragraphs 4 and 5?
A. She wanted to remain a fulltime housewife.
B. She was too confused to make a correct choice.
C. She was busy yet happy with her family life.
D. She ignored her guilty feeling for her sons.
【3】What does the author mostly want to tell us in the last paragraph?
A. Every coin has two sides.
C. Failure is the mother of success.
B. Well begun, half done.
D. Little by little, one goes far.
【4】Which of the following can best describe the author?
A. Ambitious and sensitive.
C. Caring and determined.
B. Innocent and singleminded.
D. Honest and responsible.
