Half of all bosses say a lack of sleep makes them irritable (易怒的) and prone to(有……倾向的) shout at their staff, a study said.

One in five managers also said being kept awake at night meant they were more likely to make mistakes, the Mori poll of 1,006 people revealed(显示).

Some 48% of people aged 35 to 44 said they did not get enough sleep compared to a national average 39%.

Among that age group, people with young children and managerial (管理的) jobs were most likely to suffer.

The report, commissioned (委托) by the think tank De??mos and Ikea, said the issue of sleep had been forgotten in the work / life balance debate.

Report author Charles Leadbeater said, "On any working day, a quarter of all managers in Britain are likely to be in a bad mood because they have not slept well. "

"These sleep-deprived and shouty managers with a tend??ency to make mistakes are responsible for millions of British workers. It’s hardly a recipe for good management. "

And Mr. Leadbeater called on the government and em??ployers to take action.

A small loss of sleep is likely to have a big impact on people who lead stressful lives.

"Stressed out parents are already not sleeping enough. They are the people most likely to have their sleep disrupted and they are least able to recover."

Apart from children keeping their parents awake, worrying about work is the biggest cause of wakefulness at night among managers.

Women are five times more likely than men to lose sleep because their partners snore (打呼噜).

The report predicted that there was likely to be a growing market of sleep-deprived people, with an increase in "public napping".

Opportunities to take a nap at work are also likely to in??crease, and the report recommended that employers take their responsibility for ensuring employees were well slept more se??riously.

Peter Jelkeby, marketing manager at Ikea, said the re??search confirmed suspicions Britons were not getting enough sleep.

And he added: "This is having a detrimental effect on our society as a whole. "

If you are a recent social science graduate who has had to listen to jokes about unemployment from your computer major classmates, you may have had the last laugh. There are many advantages for the social science major because this high-tech "Information Age" demands people who are flexi??ble (灵活的) and who have good communication skills.

There are many social science majors in large companies who fill important positions. For example, a number of research studies found that social science majors had achieved greater managerial success than those who had technical training or pre-professional courses. Studies show that social science majors are most suited for change, which is the leading feature (特点) of the kind of high??speed, high-pressure, high-tech world we now live in.

Social science majors are not only experiencing success in their long-term company jobs, but they are also finding jobs more easily. A study showed that many companies had filled a large percentage of their entry-level positions with social science graduates. The study also showed that the most sought-after quality in a person who was looking for a job was communication skills, noted as "very important" by 92 percent of the companies. Social science majors have these skills, often without knowing how important they are. It is probably due to these skills that they have been offered a wide variety of positions.

Finally, although some social science majors may still find it more difficult than their technically trained classmates to land the first job, recent graduates report that they don’t regret their choice of study.

72. By saying that "you may have had the last laugh" in the first paragraph, the author means that you may have _______.

       A. shared the jokes with computer majors

       B. earned as much as computer majors

       C. found jobs more easily than computer majors

       D. stopped joking about computer majors

73. Compared with graduates of other subjects, social science graduates ______.

       A. are ready to change when situations change

       B. are better able to deal with difficulties

       C. are equally good at computer skills

       D. are likely to give others pressure

74. The underlined word "land" in the last paragraph probably means _______.

       A. keep for some time          B. successfully get

       C. immediately start             D. lose regretfully

75. According to the text, what has made it easy for social science graduates to find jobs?

       A. Willingness to take low-paid jobs.

       B. Readiness to gain high-tech knowledge.

       C. Skills in expressing themselves.

       D. Part-time work experience.

阅读以下1-5段材料,然后从A-f中选出各段的主题。有一项为多余选项。
A. A good teacher acts in class
B. Acting: repetition of fixed words and movements
C. Teaching: a student-centered creative process
D. Similarities between teaching and acting
E. ( = AB) Differences between teaching and acting
F. ( = AC) A good teacher, not necessarily a good actor

1   To be a good teacher, you need some of the gifts of a good actor: you must be able to hold the
attention and interest of your audience; you must be a clear speaker, with a good, strong, pleasing voice
which is fully under your control; and you must be a- ble to act what you are teaching, In order to make
its meaning clear.
2   Watch a good teacher, and you will see that he does not sit unmoved before his class: he stands
the whole time he is teaching; he walks about, using his arms, his hands and fingers to help him in his
explanations, and his face to express feeling. Listen to him, and you will hear the loudness, the quality and
the musical note if his voice always changing according to what he is talking a- bout.
3   The fact that a good teacher has some of the gifts of a good actor doesn't mean that he will indeed
be able to act well in the stage, for there are very important differences between the teacher's work and the
actor's. The actor has to speak words which he has learnt by heart; he has to repeat exactly the same words
each time he plays a certain part, even his movements and the ways in which he uses his voice are usually
fixed beforehand. What he has to do is to make all these carefully learnt words and actions seem natural on
the stage.
4     A good teacher works in quite a different way. His audience takes an active part in his play: they
ask questions, they obey orders, and if they don't understand something, they say so, the teacher therefore
has to suit his act to the needs of his audience. He cannot learn his part by heart, but must invent it as he
goes along.
5    As a good teacher presently, you must take your au- dience as your friends, take care of them, help
them and give them enough freedom and space. I have known many teachers who were fine actors in class
but were unable to take part in a stage play be- cause their brains wouldn't keep discipline: they could not
keep strictly to what another had written.

My Grandmother was from a town in Michigan. She was always using her hands for something exciting ... she would make little sandwiches and we'd have tea parties, she'd plant flowers and carefully tend them. She'd knit toy sweaters for her grandchildren as well as making beautiful quilts for each one. I remember the small thimble (顶针)she would use while doing her needle work. Placing her thimble on her finger she'd remark,“ I wouldn't want to sew without one. ”

A few years ago when Grandma left this earth, I bid farewell to a loving grandmother. How quickly our lives can change. We had just had tea together a couple of months earlier, on her 91st birthday. I missed her very much, but I noticed it mostly on a birthday, as there was no card from Grandma. She'd never forgotten my birthday !

On one particular birthday, when I was feeling a little low and a lot older, something happened to make me feel like she was sharing that special day with me. I was arranging some colorful pillows that she had made, and suddenly I felt something inside one pillow, it was small and hard. I moved the object to a seam (接缝)that I carefully opened, and to my delight out came a tiny silver thimble!

How happy I was to find something that had been a part of her. Not realizing it had fallen off her finger, I pictured her sewing it in that little pillow that I just “happened,,to place on my bedspread that day, I carefully laid the thimble alongside the others I've collected over the years, where I could continue to see the gift.

What a precious memory of a very special lady who somehow,I knew, was laughing in delight at sewing her thimble inside my pillow. I heated the tea kettle and made some tea, using my best china,as Grandma always did,and enjoyed my tea and Grandma's thimble. What a wonderful birthday that was!

40.      How did the writer feel when she found the thimble?

C. show her love for Grandmother      D. call on people to care for the old

42.What is the best title for the passage?
