Critical thinking means thinking logically and developing an ability to ask questions or ask for evidence for a particular subject. Developing critical thinking skills in a child through the right critical thinking exercises is very important.
Critical thinking develops the ability of subjective analysis of a particular fact. Critical thinking is to evaluate the reason behind a particular fact. All possible viewpoints must be thought about before analyzing a fact, and this develops problem-solving skills in a child.
Here are some exercises you can use to encourage your child to think critically.
Quiz your child. Ask your child about daily activities that he does in the school. Quiz him about certain things that do not have a single correct answer. This will increase his ability to think about the things he’s just learned in class. Keep on telling your child simple information about nature, like the seasons when flowers bloom. You can either ask him questions or just explain to him in a casual way.
Recognize and classify. For critical thinking, your child must learn to recognize important information that is closely connected with the subject. Classification of things on a certain firm and logical basis of information is included in the critical thinking ability. Colorful toys or images can be included in teaching critical thinking. Ask your child to identify the names of the flowers, fruits and animals from a colorful chart.
Critical thinking exercises are not intended to make your child intelligent, but it is about making him successful in his decision-making ability and helping him make a successful career. Although thinking habits are cultivated(培养) in early childhood through exercises, they are indeed helpful for a lifetime.

Smoking in indoor public places including public working place, public transportation vehicles and some other special outdoor working spaces has been banned in China since January 2011. Should smoking be banned in public places? Of course, it should be. First, banning smoking in public places will not only help in saving smokers from various kinds of heath conditions and diseases, but will also be beneficial for passive smokers.
Second, banning smoking in public places will put pressure on smokers to quit. Since a smoker is forbidden from smoking in public places, he will learn how to live without smoking a cigarette for long hours. Moreover, when a smoker doesn’t see anybody around him smoking or smelling of cigarette, it might reduce his urge to smoke too. Thus, people have to quit smoking as a result of smoking ban.
Smoking in public places influences nonsmokers to take up smoking, especially adolescents. Since teens are in an impressionable age, when they see people around them smoking, they get encouraged to try it and then it becomes a habit, increasing the incidence of teen smoking. Moreover, asthma(哮喘) and ear infections are commonly seen in children who live around smokers, so if it’s banned in public places, these places will become safe for children and teens, healthwise.
Looking from the economic point of view, since smoking is a major contributing factor to many diseases, it leads to absence from work. Moreover, employees who smoke tend to take breaks now and then to smoke, thus cutting back on their working hours. So, if employers want to increase work productivity and want to make sure that their employees remain healthy, they should ban and stop smoking in and around offices.
At last, smoking cigarettes adds to the pollution of the air, so if it is banned, it will help in saving the environment from further deterioration(恶化).

It was in the Victorian Era (维多利亚时期) that the novel became the leading form of literature in English. Most writers were more concerned to meet the tastes of the middle class. The best known works of the period included the works of Charles Dickens and the Bronté sisters and others.
Charles Dickens came on the literary scene in the 1830s. Dickens wrote vividly about London life and the struggles of the poor. Most of his works were written in a very humorous style, which was popular with readers of all classes.
The Bronté sisters were English writers of the 1840s and 1850s. They began to write from early childhood. In 1846 they published the first book at their own expense as poets; however, their book attracted little attention, selling only two copies. Then the sisters turned to writing novels, each producing a novel in the following year.
An interest in rural(田园的) matters and the changing social and economic situation of the countryside may be seen in the novels of Thomas Hardy and a number of others.
Literature for children developed as a single style. Some works became well-known, such as those of Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear. Adventure novels were written for adults but are now generally grouped in the list for children. Helen Beatrix Potter was an English author at the end of the Victorian Era, best known for her children’s books, which featured (以……为特色) animal characters. As any homemaker who has tried to keep order at the dinner table knows, there is far more to a family meal than food. Sociologist Michael Lewis has been studying 50 families to find out just how much more.
Lewis and his co-workers carried out their study by videotaping(录像) the families while they ate ordinary meals in their own homes. They found that parents with small families talk actively with each other and their children. But as the number of children gets larger, conversation gives way to the parents’ efforts to control the loud noise they make. That can have an important effect on the children. “In general, the more question-asking the parents do, the higher the children’s IQ scores,” Lewis says. “And the more children there are, the less question-asking there is. ”
The study also provides an explanation for why middle children often seem to have a harder time in life than their siblings(兄弟姐妹). Lewis found that in families with three or four children, dinner conversation is likely to center on the oldest child, who has the most to talk about, and the youngest, who needs the most attention. “Middle children are invisible,” says Lewis. “When you see someone get up from the table and walk around during dinner, chances are it’s the middle child.” There is, however, one thing that stops all conversation and prevents anyone from having attention: “When the TV is on,” Lewis says, “dinner is a non-event.”
1.The writer’s purpose in writing the text is to ______.
A.report on the findings of a study
B.teach parents ways to keep order at the dinner table
C.show the relationship between parents and children
D.give information about family problems
2.Parents with large families ask fewer questions at dinner because ______.
A.they are busy serving food to their children
B.they have to pay more attention to younger children
C.they are busy keeping order at the dinner table
D.they are tired out having prepared food for the whole family
3.By saying “Middle children are invisible” in paragraph 3, Lewis means that middle children ______.
A.have to help their parents to serve dinner
B.find it hard to keep up with other children
C.are often kept away from the dinner table
D.get the least attention from the family
4.Which of the following statements would the writer agree to?
A.Parents should talk to each of their children frequently.
B.It is a good idea to have the TV on during dinner.
C.It is important to have the right food for children.
D.Elder children should help the younger ones at dinner.
