How do you keep a library when you¡¯ve got no room for your books? With rising rents and record numbers of young people having to move with their parents, it¡¯s clear that we are a moving generation.

As a student in Leeds I moved three times in four years; in London it was seven times in three years. Regularly having to load our possessions into laundry bags and boxes takes a lot of our finance and energy, but the effect on our book collections is rarely considered.

Keeping a collection of beloved books in a damp flat with no shelves, which you¡¯ll probably have to move out of in six months¡¯ time, is a challenge. Deciding which books to keep and which to reject becomes increasingly difficult. Do you hold on to the books you know you¡¯ll reread or do you keep the to-be-read pile intact (ÍêºÃÎÞËðµÄ) ?

Donating books to a charity shop or local school may be virtuous, but when you haven¡¯t had time to read them since your last move, it becomes depressing. There¡¯s a copy of Much Ado About Nothing I¡¯ve been moving around with for nearly a decade because it is the only piece of Shakespeare in the marketplace.

¡°Just buy a Kindle!¡± you might argue ¡ª but for many people, books are more than just books. They offer us an emotional connection to the past, to the person who gave them to us. They are a way to brighten up a dark flat, they are a link to home; they are the hardest thing to move and the most enjoyable thing to unpack.

So what if you are already facing your second move this year and can¡¯t bear the thought of pensioning off more of your beloved books? You start reading more. Read all the books in your current bedroom and work out if they¡¯re worth the trip; give away as many books as you can; leave books with trusted friends to be reclaimed at a later point. Start looking at your books creatively.

1.Why has the moving generation appeared? (no more than 15 words)

2.While moving, why do people often ignore their book collections? (no more than 10 words)

3.What makes the author keeps a copy of Much Ado About Nothing? (no more than 10 words)

4.What does the underlined phrase pensioning off in the last paragraph mean? (no more than 3 words)

5.What would you do with your books when you have to move? Give a persuasive reason. (no more than 25 words)

Students usually have two long holidays a year, but have you heard elephants have holidays?

The Indian elephants from a temple are sent on a north-long holiday with massages(°´Ä¦) and baths to relax. The 64 elephants will be fed with a lot of food, enough for them to put on 700~800 pounds.

A temple veterinarian said that those Indian elephants would be treated after spending a month walking on roads, living on leaves and bananas and giving shows during lots of temple festivals. Their daily diet includes special rice and other special food, which are very nutritious and can make them healthy and strong. All of these are made by professional people.

This treatment will also calm them down ahead of a busy work schedule in upcoming events later in the year where they are the main attractions. The special holiday has cost the temple about¡ê12,500, but extra money is ready for being used to treat the animals.

Indians believe that doing something good to elephants can help them get wisdom and power. Having elephants is a traditional symbol of honor for temples across southern India. All temples, however, never buy their elephants. The elephants were donated by people.

China has been drinking tea since the time of Shennong, 5,000 years ago. Britain¡¯s relationship with tea is much shorter, but tea enjoys the pride as the UK¡¯s national drink. According to the UK Tea Council, British people drink an average of three cups a day or a national total of 165 million cups every day.

With figures like these, it is no surprise that time spent taking tea affects the working day in Britain. A recent survey found that 24 minutes a day are lost to making, buying and drinking tea and coffee. That is, £400 a year is lost in working hours per employee, or 190 days over a lifetime. So, should employers be worried about this lost working time, or does the tea break make up in other ways?

One argument is that caffeine improves mental state: a drink of tea or coffee can make you active and focus on work.

Professor Rogers of the University of Bristol disagrees. After years of studying caffeine he sees nothing can prove that. ¡°Workers would perform equally well if not drinking it at all,¡± he says. ¡°But if they¡¯re often drinking it and then go without, they¡¯ll feel tired and won¡¯t work well.¡±

Psychologist Cooper instead emphasizes the role tea breaks play in office life, and in building social relationships. ¡°We need to make people more active and see other people. The tea break is one way of doing this,¡± says Cooper.

And Professor Rogers also points out the comfort effect of a hot drink: ¡°We warm our hands on them on a cold day; they¡¯re comforting and play a big role in our everyday life. Whatever the caffeine¡¯s doing, I¡¯d say these 24 minutes aren¡¯t wasted.¡±

1.What is the passage mainly about?

A. Tea Breaks cannot make people more active at work.

B. British people drink more tea than people in other countries.

C. Tea break plays an important role in people¡¯s life in Britain.

D. A lot of time has been wasted drinking tea in the working day.

2.We learn from a recent survey that in Britain _______.

A. £400 is lost in working hours for each person

B. tea breaks take up 24 minutes in a working day

C. people spends 190 days drinking tea and coffee each year

D. people drink 165 million cups in working hours every day

3. What¡¯s Psychologist Coopers¡¯ attitude towards tea break?

A. Doubtful. B. Uncertain.

C. Negative. D. Positive.

We can't tell a contestant is winning because he is really talented or because there is no comparison

Hunan Satellite TV is losing its leading position? There's a reason for saying this. In 2012, the reality talent show, the Voice of China, on the Zhejiang Television became the most popular program in China.

The reason for its popularity was really because of its excellent quality?

The administrative department really contributed a lot in the popularity of the Voice of China. In the past, there were no other draft shows(Ñ¡Ðã½ÚÄ¿) ranked as high as Super Girl and Super Boy. Even though there were some draft shows which seemed to share the popularity, it never turned out true. All the other draft shows were shadowed by the ones on Hunan TV. One example was that since draft shows of Hunan TV were broadcast on Friday night, the draft shows of other stations were shifted to Saturday or Sunday. However, Hunan TV didn't get their permission for broadcasting shows in 2012.

And if this were not bad enough, SARFT did a great favor for it. SARFT issued a regulation, saying that all draft shows should be broadcast after 10:30 pm at night. Zhejiang TV declared long before the regulation that since was ¡°no audition(º£Ñ¡)£¬ no PK, no rise in rank, no voting, no champion¡±, its program was never a draft show. So, in 2012, all the opponents of Zhejiang TV had to broadcast their draft shows after 10:30 pm while the Voice of China was permitted to be broadcast in prime time.

If you really think about it, there's no essential difference between a draft show and the Voice of China. It also selected people from all over the country, how did they say this was different from a draft show? No PK, really? PK doesn't mean one versus one! A team versus a team is called PK too. And ¡°no rise in rank¡± is just a switch of concepts because at the end of every game, some left the stage and some stayed. If there was really ¡°no champion¡±, how come there was only one ¡°good voice of China¡± at the final round? All these were rising in rank, in disguise(ÒþÐÔ).

Under such circumstances, the Voice of China even got praise. We are not saying that it is not a good show; we are saying that there's regret about the show since it had no opponent.

1.The following factors are important in making the Voice of China popular EXCEPT _______.

A. the unique quality of the voice of China

B. the policy support from SARFT and the administrative department

C. the favorable broadcasting time

D. the shortage of good opponents

2.The passage mainly tells us _______.

A. the voice of China is not a real draft show

B. the draft shows of Hunan Satellite TV still cause our attention

C. the advantag2s of the Voice of China

D. the reasons why Hunan Satellite TV is losing its leading position

3.What's the author's attitude towards the voice of China?

A. supportive B. doubtful

C. optimistic D. hopeful

4.Which is TRUE according to the passage?

A. SARFT issued a regulation, saying that all draft shows should be broadcast after 10:30 pm at night.

B. Draft shows of Hunan TV were broadcast on Sunday night.

C. In the past, there were some draft shows ranked as high as Super Girl.

D. The Voice of China is a program of Hunan Satellite TV.

¡°Have you ever been out on a boat and felt it lifted up by a wave? Or have you jumped in the water and felt the rush of energy as waves came over you?¡± asked Jamie Taylor of the Wave Energy Group at the University of Edinburgh. ¡°There is certainly a lot of energy in waves,¡± he said. Scientists are working to use that energy to make electricity. Most waves are created when winds blow across the ocean. ¡°The wind starts out by making little ripples(Á°äô), but if they keep on blowing, those ripples get bigger and bigger and turn into waves,¡± Taylor said. ¡°Waves are one of nature¡¯s ways of picking up energy and then sending it off on a journey.¡± When waves come toward the shore, people can set up dams to block the water and send it through a large wheel called a turbine (ÎÐÂÖ»ú). The turbine can then power an electrical generator to produce electricity.

¡°The resource is huge,¡± said Janet Swain of the World Watch Institute. ¡°We will never run out of wave power.¡± Besides, wave energy does not create the same pollution as other energy sources, such as oil or coal. Oceans cover three quarters of the Earth¡¯s surface¡ªthat would make wave power seem ideal for creating energy throughout the world, though there are some weak points yet to overcome.

Swain said that wave power still costs too much money. She also said that its effects on sea animals are still unknown. What is more, wave power could affect fishing and boat traffic. Traditional sources of energy like oil and gas may someday run out. ¡°Demand for energy to power our TVs and computers, drive our cars, and heat and cool our homes is rising rapidly throughout the world,¡± Swain said. In the future when you turn on a light, an ocean wave could be providing the electricity!

1.The writer uses the two questions at the beginning of the passage to .

A. test the readers¡¯ knowledge about waves

B. draw the readers¡¯ attention to the topic

C. show Jamie Taylor¡¯s importance

D. invite the readers to answer them

2.The underlined phrase ¡°picking up¡± is closest in meaning to .

A. starting again B. speeding up

C. improving D. gathering

3.We can make better use of wave energy if we .

A. shorten its journey to thousands of homes

B. build more small power stations on the oceans

C. reduce the cost of turning it into electric power

D. quicken the steps of producing electricity

4.It can be inferred that someday we might not worry about .

A. our power supply

B. our boat traffic

C. air pollution

D. our supply of sea fish
