While you are online there are plenty of perfectly legal sites where you can listen to music for free. This gives you the chance to listen to music before buying it, discover new music, and create great online playlists that you can share with others.

The Sixty One

The Sixty One is devoted to showcasing obscure or unknown artists of all genres. There’s a range of musical styles from classical to rock and roll, folk to jazz, and everything in between. Don’t expect to find big name musicians on here; you’re more likely to find the musicians playing at local coffee shops than bands you hear on the radio. You can find fantastic music that you never would have heard of otherwise.

Pow Wow

Pow Wows are the Native American people’s way of meeting together, to join in dancing, singing, visiting, renewing old friendships, and making new ones. This is a time method to renew Native American culture and preserve the rich heritage of American Indians. PowWows.com has 2 online radio stations that play Native American Music 24/7 free! Here you can listen to your favorite artists and drum groups on your computer or mobile device and add your music to our station.

Playlist

Playlist has an enormous library, so you can create playlists with almost any musician you can think of. They have both some lesser known artists and big names, so you have a really good selection. The worst part: Due to licensing laws, many of the songs on Playlist are now restricted to certain countries. So unless you live inside the US, it is likely that you might not be able to find all of your favorite songs.

Pandora

Pandora is an intelligent Internet radio site. Basically, as you listen, you can give each song a thumbs up or thumbs down. You can create your own radio station that only plays music you like. The best part: It listens to your opinion, so that after a while it’s only playing music you like, but the list is always changing and expanding.

My Space

Combine a major social networking site with thousands of artists around the world. Each musician has their own page, which normally has a playlist of several of their songs. But it has a huge range of musicians ranging from huge stars to the up-and-coming, and you can listen to the music and interact with the rest of the page.

1.If you enjoy listening to some new music, you can pay a visit to ______.

A. The Sixty One B. Playlist C. Pow Wow D. Pandora

2.You can’t listen to some music on Playlist possibly because ______.

A. you don’t have any playlist

B. you are not one of the members of the website

C. it is only open to those who are in the United States

Philip Pullman spent a great deal of his childhood traveling abroad because both his father and stepfather were pilots in the Royal Air Force(皇家空军). As a child, he went on several long ocean voyages, and he lived in Africa and in Australia. “Before I was 11 I had been to eight different schools.”

“In Australia, I made a great discovery. TV hadn’t reached Australia yet, but everyone listened to the radio. I remember listening to gangster serials(黑帮剧), and cowboy serials, and best of all—Superman! When I first saw a superman comic(连环漫画), it changed my life. I’d been reading books for a long time, but I’d never known comics before. Soon afterwards, I discovered Batman, too, whom I loved even more.”

Pullman started writing his first novel the day after he had finished his final exams at Oxford University. “I discovered after about an hour that it was much harder than I’d expected. It still is! I found that the amount I could write comfortably every day was about three pages, so that’s what I’ve done ever since.”

Before he became a full-time writer, Pullman had been teaching for many years. “What I enjoyed most during that time was telling stories over and over, until I knew them as well as I knew my own life.” He had always loved telling stories—as a schoolboy he had entertained his friends by reading stories to them, or by making up his own.

One day he got a letter that had arrived at his door even though the writer of the letter didn’t know his address. The envelope(信封) just said, “Philip Pullman, The Storyteller, Oxford.”

Whether you admit it or not, music improves our daily life and makes us feel easy, especially the music of Beethoven and Mozart. But can you believe that a school in England is using classical music to cut down students’ bad behavior?

The head teacher Brian Walker at the West Park School in Derby asks some students to stay behind after school on Fridays. He forces his students to listen to Mozart and other classical music. He also makes them copy his favorite poems and they have to watch educational videos.

Mr. Walker says his main aim is to stop noisy pupils causing trouble in class for students who want to study. He said the students staying behind were “not the smokers or drinkers, the truants (逃学生) or the people who are late for school…It’s those who have slowed the learning and teaching in class for everyone”. Mr. Walker said this was unacceptable, because it was making the rest of the students fail to focus their attention on their study.

Mr. Walker believes what he does reminds students that education is something to value. “It helps them see they are part of something bigger that will improve their life chances,” he said. The head teacher thinks students in fact learn from being kept behind after school. “Hopefully, I open their ears to an experience they don’t normally have and don’t want to have again, so it’s both educational and acts as a warning.”

Music has had success elsewhere in reducing bad behavior. In 2004, it reduced crime on London’s subway by 25 percent. Researchers from a Belfast university found it helped stop elephants’ bad behavior.

However, one West Park student called Kieran said, “An hour of Mr. Walker’s music is a real killer.”

A. make them rest after a day’s study

B. punish them for their bad behavior

C. get them to love arts gradually

D. reduce their bad behavior

2.A student who _____ may be left behind to listen to Mozart after class.

A. plays truant B. smokes in class

C. bothers others in class D. comes late for class

3.Why does Mr. Walker say some students’ bad behavior is unacceptable?

A. Because the rest of the students hate them.

B. Because they are wasting their life.

C. Because they are disturbing teachers.

D. Because they have a bad influence on the other students.

4.In the eyes of Mr. Walker, _____.

A. some students don’t realize education is valuable

B. all students can learn from music

C. music must be taught after class

D. students ought to love music

5.It can be inferred from the last two paragraphs that _____.

A. the action Mr. Walker takes sometimes doesn’t really work as planned

B. Mr. Walker aims to tell students study is important

C. once music helped animals behave well

D. animals also like to listen to music

What is your favourite colour? Do you like yellow, orange, red? 1.. Do you prefer greys and blues? Then you are probably quiet, shy, and you would rather follow than lead. You tend to be pessimist. At least, this is what psychologists tell us, and they should know, because they have been seriously studying the meaning of colour preference, as well as the effect that colours have on human beings. 2.. If you happen to love brown, you did so, as soon as you opened your eyes, or at least as soon as you could see clearly.

A black bridge over the Thames River, near London, used to be the scene of more suicides(自杀) than any other bridge in the area---until it was repainted green. The number of suicide attempts immediately fell sharply. Perhaps it would have fallen even more if the bridge had been done in pink or baby blue.
