Americans use the term “college students” to mean students either in colleges or universities. Not only that, Americans almost never say “going off to university” or “when I was in university.” That sounds British. 【1】

2】 Both offer undergraduate degrees in the arts and sciences, for example. And both can help prepare young people to earn a living.

But many colleges do not offer graduate studies. Another difference is that universities are generally bigger. 3

Another place of higher education, especially in technical areas, is an institute, like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Yet even an institute of technology can offer a wide choice of programs and activities.

Modern universities developed from those of Europe in the Middle Ages. The word “university” came from the Latin universities, describing a group of people organized for a common purpose. 4 In England, colleges were formed to provide students with places to live. Usually each group was studying the same thing. So college came to mean an area of study.

The first American universities divided their studies into a number of areas and called each one a college. This is still true. 5 For example, Harvard College is the undergraduate part of Harvard University.

A. A college can also be a part of a university.

B. They offer more programs and do more research.

C. There are more universities than colleges in the USA.

D. Colleges and universities have many things in common.

E. Universities /span>and colleges offer students different opportunities.

F. Instead, they say “going off to college” or “when I was in college.”

G. “College” came from collegium, a Latin word with a similar meaning.

【答案】

【1】F

【2】D

【解析】

试题分析: 本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了在美国大学和学院的区别和共同之处。

【1】F考查上下文理解题。根据上文Americans almost never say “going off to university” or “when I was in university. ”可知,美国人几乎不说“going off to university” or “when I was in university. ”但是他们说,“going off to college” and “when I was in college.”。这是逻辑的衔接。不说……而说……。可知F项符合上下文。判断选F项。

【2】D考查上下文理解题。根据文Both offer undergraduate degrees in the arts and sciences, for example. And both can help prepare young people to earn a living.可知,谈得是两者的共同点。与D项吻合。可知选D

3B考查上下文理解题。根据前文But many colleges do not offer graduate studies.可知,college不提供进一步学习。而universities则提供更多的课程和研究。可知这里B项符合上下文。选B项。

【4】G考查上下文理解题。根据前文The word “university” came from the Latin universities, describing a group of people organized for a common purpose.可知,前后对应都说各自的来源。故G项符合上下文。故选G。

【5】A考查上下文理解题。根据文的For example, Harvard College is the undergraduate part of Harvard University.可知这是总说和分说的关系。说明A项符合上下文。故选A。

Choosing a major is an important decision and one that could pave the way for a successful, lifelong career. Some students know what they want to major in right away, while others take their sweet time to choose. 【1】 Here are a few tips on how to choose a major:

Know your strengths. It can help you narrow down your options and find an area of study that suits you well. If you’re not certain what your strengths are, talk to your advisor and a career counselor(顾问) to assess your strengths and apply them to a major.2 Just because that your’re good at science doesn’t necessarily mean you’re prepared for advanced biology and chemistry classes, or weekly three-hour labs spent observing animals.

Talk to upperclassmen. Upperclassmen have been in your shoes and know how hard it can be to choose a major.3 They can give you first-hand accounts of taking advanced courses and how to avoid switching majors halfway through college. Talking to upperclassmen about their majors will give you a better understanding of what each program undertakes and what to expect. They can also give you advice on which classes you should take, the best professors in the college and guaranteed ways to get an A.

4 Regardless of what your parents, friends or advisors tell you, choosing a major is your decision and you should do what you love. Students may feel pressured to choose a major based on career salaries and job outlook(前景).5 If you’re stuck studying something you hate, chances are that you won’t do very well in your classes and you may end up never using your degree.

A. Follow your heart.

B. Talk to people in the area.

C. Either way, don’t worry.

D. They won’t sugarcoat things, either.

E. It’s also important to know your limits.

F. Before you settle on a particular major, find out more.

G. However, it’s far more important that you follow your passion.

【题目】概要写作

阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

When a consumer finds that something he or she bought is faulty or in some other way does not live up to what the producer says for it, the first step is to present the warranty(保单),or any other records that might help, at the store of buying. In most cases, this action will produce results.

However, if it does not, there are various means the consumer may use to gain satisfaction. A simple and common method used by many consumers is to complain directly to the store manager. In general, the “higher up” the consumer takes his or her complaint, the faster he or she can expect it to be settled. In such a case, it is usually settled in the consumer's favour, taking it as true that he or she has a just right.

Consumers should complain in person whenever possible, but if they cannot get to the place of buying, it is acceptable to phone or write the complaint in a letter.

Complaining is usually most effective when it is done politely but firmly, and especially when the consumer can show clearly what is wrong with what was bought in question. If this cannot be done, the consumer will succeed best by presenting specific information as to what is wrong, rather than by making general statements. For example, “The left speaker does not work at all and the sound coming out of the right one is unclear” is better than “This stereo(立体音响) does not work.”.

The store manager may advise the consumer to write to the producer, if so, the consumer should do this, stating the complaint as politely and as firmly as possible. But if a polite complaint does not achieve the expected result, the consumer can go a step further. He or she can threaten to take the seller to court or report the seller to a public organization responsible for protecting consumers' rights.

【题目】 Social change is more likely to occur in societies where there is a mixture of different kinds of people than in societies where people are similar in many ways. The simple reason for this is that there are more different ways of looking at things present in the first kind of society. There are more ideas, more disagreements in interest, and more groups and organizations with different beliefs. In addition, there is usually a greater worldly interest and greater tolerance in mixed societies. All these factors (因素)tend to promote social change by opening more areas of life to decision. In a society where people are similar in many ways, there are fewer situations for people to see the need or the chance for change because everything seems to be the same. And although conditions may not be satisfactory, they are at least customary and clear.

Within a society, social change is also likely to occur more frequently and more readily in the material aspects of the culture than in the non-material aspects, for example, in technology rather than in values; in what has been learned later in life rather than what was learned early; in the simple elements(要素)rather than in the complex ones; and in elements that are acceptable to the culture rather than in strange ones.

Besides, social change is easier if it is gradual. For example, it comes more readily in human relations on a continuous scale rather than one with a sharp division. This is one reason why change has not come more quickly to Black Americans as compared to other American minorities, because of the sharp difference in appearance between them and their white fellows.

【1】The underlined part “greater tolerance” in Paragraph 1 probably refers to “________”.

A. quicker adaptation to changing conditions

B. greater willingness to accept social change

C. more respect for different beliefs and behavior

D. greater readiness to agree to different conditions

【2】 Why is social change less likely to occur in a society where people are similar in many ways?

A. They are so conservative that they tend to slow down social change.

B. They can easily get what they want in the material aspect of society.

C. They are so used to their conditions that they seldom want to change.

D. They have similar needs that can be satisfied without much difficulty.

【3】 Which of the following factors probably tends to promote social change fast?

A. Different points of view.

B. Traditional values.

C. Sharp divisions in relations.

D. Similar appearances.

【4】What is this passage mainly discussing?

A. Two different kinds of society.

B. Consequences of social change.

C. The importance of social change.

D. Certain factors affecting social change.

【题目】Let's face it. No one drinks diet sodas for the taste. People drink diet sodas in the hope that it will help them lose weight or at least keep them from gaining it. Yet it seems to have exactly the opposite effect, according to a new study.

Researchers from the University of Texas said those who drank two or more diet sodas a day had waist size increases that were six times greater than those who didn't drink diet sodas. “What we saw was that the more diet sodas a person drank, the more weight they were likely to gain, said Sharon Fowler.

The study was based on data from 474 participants in a large, ongoing research project, where the participants were followed for nearly 10 years.

While the findings are surprising, they also offer some explanations.

Nutrition expert, Melanie Rogers, who works with overweight patients in New York, has found that when patients are switched from regular to diet sodas, they don't lose weight at all. “We weren't seeing weight loss necessarily, and that was confusing to us, said Rogers.

So why would diet soda cause weight gain? No one knows for sure yet,but it could be that people think they can eat more if they drink diet sodas, and so over-compensate(弥补) for the missing calories.

A related study found some sweeteners (甜味剂) raised blood sugar levels in some mice. “Data from this and other potential studies suggest that the promotion of diet sodas and artificial sweeteners may be risky, said Helen P. Hazuda, professor at School of Medicine of the University of Texas. They may be free of calories, but not of consequences.”

【1】People drink diet sodas to________.

A. enjoy its taste B. stay in fashion

C. achieve weight loss D. gain more energy

【2】We can learn from the passage that________.

A. regular sodas make people lose more weight

B. diet soda drinkers tend to eat more food

C. diet sodas do help reduce calories

D. most blood diseases come from diet sodas

【3】The underlined word “They” in the last paragraph probably refers to“________”.

A. sweeteners

B. diet sodas and artificial sweeteners

C. sodas

D. diet soda drinkers and sweetener takers
