If we are asked exactly what we were doing a year ago, we might have to say that we could not remember. But if we had kept a book and written in it an account (陈述) of what we did each day, we should be able to give an answer to the question.

It is the same in history. Many things have been forgotten because we do not have any written account of them. Sometimes men did keep a record of the important happenings in their country, but often it was destroyed by fire or in a war. Sometimes there was never any written record at all because the people of that time and place did not know how to write. For example, we know a great deal about the people who lived in china 4,000 years ago, because they could write and leave written records for whose who lived after them. But we know almost nothing about the people who lived even 200 years ago in central Africa, because they had not learned go write.

Sometimes, of course, even if the people cannot write, they may know something of the past. They have heard about it from older people, and often songs and dances and stories have been made about the most important happenings, and those have been sung and acted and told for many generations, for most people are proud to tell what their fathers did in the past. This we may call ‘remembered history’. Some of it has now been written history, because words are much more easily changed when used again and again in speech than when copied in writing. But where there are no written records, such spoken stories are often very helpful.

Which of the following ideas is NOT talked about in the passage above?

A. “Remembered history” is less reliable than written history.

B. Written records of the past played a most important in our learning of the human history.

C.A written account of our daily activities helps us to remember what we have done

D. Where there are no written records, there is no history.

Remembered history”refers to          .

A. history based on a person’s imagination

B. stories of important happenings passed down from mouth to mouth

C. history written down in books

D. what we have learned and remembered in history lessons

“Remembered history”is regarded as valuable only when       .

A. it is written down                            B. there is no written account

C .is proves down                     D. people are interested in it

It can be inferred from the passage that we could have learned much more about our past than we do now if our ancestors had       .

A. kept a written record of every past event

B. not fought against one another in wars

C. told exact stories of the most important happenings

D. produced and taught more songs and dances

【小题1】D

【小题2】B

【小题3】B

【小题4】A

解析:

【小题1】根据文章的大意:用文字记录历史的重要性,若没有文字“remembered history”就显得尤为重要,而其与用文字记载事件有着不可替代的缺点---不是很可靠。由此判断本题选D

【小题2】 根据“… for most people are proud to tell what their fathers did in the past. This we may call ‘remembered history’.即因为大多数人自豪地讲着他们的父辈从前做过的事。由此判断“remembered history”是用嘴来传述事件,故选B

【小题3】 有文章的最后一句:“…where there are no written records, such spoken stories are often very helpful.”

We all have goals that we are moving towards and making a great effort to achieve. This is a good thing. Or can it be bad? How many of us never reach our goals and yet we have tried so hard and really thought about nothing else? I believe the mistake most of us make is that we do not focus on our present situation.

Let me explain. Most of us see our present situation as a stepping stone that we use simply as a means of reaching our final destination. We don’t take time to truly appreciate where we are today and all the great things we already have in our lives. We should focus our attention on the journey and not on the destination, or we will miss the beautiful scenery along the way.

Let’s use our job as an example. Now most of us want a promotion. We have plans to become the manager or general manager in our companies. Unfortunately, most of us will never reach the goal, but will watch others achieve our goal instead.

What we should be doing is focusing on the job we are currently in now. Forget where we want to get to and just focus on the present. You see, what we can control is our performance in our current job. We can decide to be the best we possibly can in our current job. Now this may mean further education to have the skills we currently do not have. It may mean working harder to produce better results than our colleagues. It could simply be a change of attitude, such as stopping complaining and becoming a more devoted and supportive employee. By doing our current job to the best of our abilities, we in fact give ourselves the best chance of promotion.

So the best thing for all of us to do to achieve our goals is to just focus on what we have and where we are now. Do the best and be the best we possibly can in our current situations, and we will give ourselves the very best chance of reaching our goals in the future. We have heard the old sayings and they are true: “Rome wasn’t built in a day.”, “Patience is a virtue”, and so on.

Have patience, have appreciation of what we already have, and take time to help ourselves be the very best we can. Do these things and we will all reach our goals, but more importantly, we will enjoy our life every day.

When your toothbrush is at the end of its days, don’t just throw it away, as a survey has revealed many other uses for an old toothbrush.

The survey was carried out by the Dental Health Foundation to promote National Smile Month and more than 1, 000 people participated in the survey. It found that more than four in every five people re-use their toothbrush for another purpose.

Four in ten people use an old toothbrush to brush bathroom tiles (瓷砖), and almost a third use it to clean kitchen appliances. More than a quarter of those questioned use old toothbrushes to clean jewellery, and roughly one in every five use them for shining shoes. Some other uses for toothbrushes include cleaning bikes, computer keyboards, toilet seats, fish tanks and finger nails.

The survey also found that the age of the owner can determine what happens to a toothbrush after it is not suitable to be used to brush teeth any more. People over 75 are three times more likely to re-use their toothbrush for a different purpose than those between the ages of 16 and 34 and twice more likely than those between 35 and 44.

Additionally,           to reuse their toothbrush for chores (日常琐事) and other uses than their male counterparts. Some women admitted to using their toothbrush to apply hair dye (染料)while some men said they used an old toothbrush to clean their dog’s teeth.

There are two basic ways to see growth: one as a product, the other as a process.People have generally viewed personal growth as an external(外部的) result or product that can easily be identified and measured. The worker who gets a promotion, the student whose grades improve, the foreigner who learns a new language--- all these are examples of people who have measurable results to show for their efforts.

By contrast, the process of personal growth is much more difficult to determine, since by definition it is a journey and not the specific signposts or landmarks along the way.The process is not the road itself, but rather the attitudes and feelings people have, their caution or courage, as they go through new experiences and unexpected obstacles. In this process, the journey never really ends; there are always new ways to experience the world, new ideas to try, new challenges to accept.

In order to grow, to travel new roads, people need to have a willingness to take risks, to be faced with the unknown, and to accept the possibility that they may “fail” at first. How we see ourselves as we try a new way of being is essential to our ability to grow.

These feelings of insecurity and self – doubt are both unavoidable and necessary if we are to change and grow.If we do not face and overcome these internal fears and doubts, if we protect ourselves too much, then we cease to grow.We become trapped inside a shell of our own making.

1.A person is generally believed to achieve personal growth when______..

A.he has given up his smoking habit

B.he has made great efforts in his work

C.he is interested in making anything new

D.he has tried to determine where he is on his journey

2.In the author’s eyes, one who views personal growth as a process would______.

A.judge his ability to grow from his own achievements

B.succeed in climbing up the social ladder

C.face difficulties and take up challenges

D.aim high and reach his goal each time

3.When the author says “a new way of being” (para.3), he is referring to _____.

A.a new way of taking risks

B.a new approach to experiencing the world

C.a new system of adapting to change

D.a new method of finding ourselves

4.For personal growth, the author may not support __________.     .

A.curiosity and more chances

B.being quick in self – adaptation

C.open – minded to new experiences

D.avoidance of internal fears and doubts

科目:高中英语 来源:2013届度重庆市高一下学期期中考试英语题 题型:阅读理解

In our life, we face situations where we are either asked to choose between trust and disbelief. Many of us would say we have to choose trust over disbelief. Actually we are given intellectual(智力的) power to choose what we want, and what we choose certainly need not be the one that sounds pleasing. That is, we can choose both trust and disbelief, but we have to know when to choose between these two

We should all realize that we are living in a world which is unfortunately mixed with people of various types. We have been given the power of judging who we are working with and who we are partnering with. We cannot give an excuse for believing a scheming(诡计多端的)person, just because he looked or sounded nice, unless we consider ourselves mentally unskillful.

This world was there before us and it does not owe us a single thing. We are asked to take care of ourselves and our belongings. Trust, too, has to be saved for the deserving(值得的) people. When we give trust universally to all, we end up troubled by the undeserving common cheat. People say trust is life. True! But only wisely exercised trust is life.

When we start a conversation with someone, the first things that we usually notice would be their dress, behavior, style and their language. What sometimes we all forget to look at is the person’s intention. Now how to look at a person’s intention is a lesson everybody has to learn for themselves in their own way -- there is no single standard for it. But it is certainly possible to discover the purpose if we seek a little bit more.

Certainly a false offer of friendship or guidance cannot stand undiscovered for long; we are therefore called to exercise disbelief over trust at least momentarily till we find out that we certainly are in agreement with a mutual(相互的)good-willed person.

The world teaches you lots of lessons and if we are willing, we can learn all that we want.

1. In the first paragraph, the author ________.

A. concentrates on the reason why we make different choices

B. focuses on how to choose between trust and disbelief

C. suggests that trust should be wisely exercised

D. implies that people are forced to make the choice

2. The underlined sentence means __________

A. trust and disbelief go hand in hand with each other.

B. disbelief is necessary if you aren’t wise

C. trust is established if two people know each other

D. doubt may serve as the precondition for trust

3. We can infer from the passage that _________.

A. people who we are working with are in fact those who we are partnering with

B. the first thing we notice tends to mislead our judgment

C. the mentally healthy people will not judge a person by his looks

D. the standards of looking at a person’s intention are various

4. Which of the following can serve as the best title for the passage?

A. Trust or Disbelief?           B. Trust Is Life.

C. Trust over Disbelief?         D.When to Choose between Trust and Disbelief?
