President Jiang Zemin yesterday highly praised the outstanding performance of Chinese athletes at the Sydney Olympic Games, describing their achievement as the“glory of the nation and the pride of the people”.
Jiang made the remarks in a speech while meeting with the Chinese Olympic delegation at the Great Hill of the People yesterday.
China pocketed a record of 28 gold, 16 silver, and 15 bronze medals at the Olympic Games, taking third place in the medal score behind only the United States and Russia.
Hailing the results as“a new breakthrough”for China, Jiang extended heartfelt congratulations to every member of the delegation and sports workers across the country on behalf of the central authorities and the whole nation.
The whole nation, from the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the State Council to the People of all ethnic groups and overseas Chinese,“feel sincere (诚挚的)joy and incredible pride for your excellent performance,”he told the athletes.
He particularly mentioned that such excellent performances resulted from the“spirit of patriotism (爱国主义 ), collectivism(集体主义)and socialism,”and demonstrated (表明) the Chinese people’s enterprising (有胆量的) spirit to“constantly strive to become stronger.”
Jiang attributed the results to the collective efforts of the delegation leaders, the athletes and their coaches.
“All this shows that if all Chinese people were to unite as one they would be able to accomplish things that would attract worldwide attention,”he said.
He said the Chinese Government and people will give“full support”to Beijing’s bid for the 2008 Olympic Games.
The president promised this support in a letter he wrote to IOC president Juan Antonio Smaranch.
Jiang wrote in the letter, dated September 9:“I have received your letter concerning Beijing’s bid for the 2008 Olympic Games.”
“At the recent IOC Executive Board session presided over (主持) by you, Beijing has been accepted as one of the five candidate cities for the 2008 Olympic Games.”
“My colleague and I fully support Beijing’s Olympic bid. If the 2008 Olympic Games can be held in Beijing, a fast developing city with a long standing civilization, it will be of great significance to the Olympic Movement, to China and to the world at large.”

Japan escaped the world's most powerful earthquake in two and half years on Friday with only 400 injuries, most of them minor.
Damage from the pre-dawn quake-measuring 8 on the Richter scale-was relatively light, not only because it struck deep under the ocean but because Japan's population was prepared for such an event.
Power and water supplies were cut off for several hours after the event. There were no reports at 4:50 am (local time). Two fishermen are still missing, though. Police suspect they have been swept away by the tsunami (huge ocean wave) that followed the earthquake.
A wide area of the island suffered damage: roads were blocked, fishing boats sunk, and part of the ceiling of Kushiro airport, 900 kilometers northeast of Tokyo, caved in. Kushiro, a city of 190,000 people, was believed to be the hardest hit.
In the nearby city of Tomakomai, black smoke and flames rose into the sky from an oil tank fire. There were no injuries though, and the fire was contained within hours. Officials said 188,700 barrels of crude oil were lost.
Residents were shaken by the event, but stayed calm despite some 25 aftershocks-at least one registering 7.1 on the Richter scale.
The quake was the strongest worldwide since the 8.4-magnitude quake of June 23, 2001. That, near the coast of Peru(秘鲁), killed 74 people.
Takeshi Matsumura, a Hokkaido government official, said 455 people were confirmed injured by late Friday.
Only 28 were seriously hurt, mostly suffering from broken bones. Located along the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, Japan is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries.

Soon it may be harder to stop and smell the roses.
Growing levels of air pollution from power plants and automobiles have reduced flower fragrances (芬芳) by up to 90 percent in the US.That is compared with pre-industrial levels,a new study has found.
The trend is unpleasant for human noses, but may be life - threatening for bees and butterflies.
"Many insects find flowers by folowing the scent(香味) produced by those flowers," said the studies lead author Jose D.Fuentes,an environmental scientist at the University of Virginia.
"The increasing pollution makes it difficult for them to locate the flowers and feed on their nectar(花蜜)."
Scientists have alrady known that flowers produce scent molecules(分子) that bond with pollutants. The process breaks down the plants' sweet smell.
With more pollution in the air,the scent molecules don't remain effective as long and travel shorter distances on the wind.
The new study suggests that in the mid - 19th century, when pollution levels were first recorded, scent molecules would have been able to travel some 1,000 to 1,200 meters.
Today,in the polluted air found downwind of large cities, scentst may only make it some 200 to 300 meters.
The report was recently published in the journal,Atmospheric Environment.
Bee farmers have reported that bee populations are dropping dramatically in many parts of the world in recent years. Could these missing scents be a factor?
Scientists trying to hind the cause of bee population declines have blamed bacteria, pesticides, and even cellphone radiation.
Jay Evans,an entomologist(昆虫学者) at the US Department of Agriculture's bee research laboratory, was interested in the new study. But he says he hasn't seen bee behavior that suggests trouble with scents.
"Over the last couple of summers I don't think the bees in this area were bringing in much less food,"he said.
"It might be that they had to work harder, but it seems like as long as there were bees to collect food they were finding flowers somewhere."
But Fuentes fears that the fading smell of flowers may stress insects that are already faced with other threats.
"The effects shown in these studies will simply exacerbate whatever the bees are going through right now,"he said.
"It's something that is really worthwhile paying attention to."
56.What's the passage mainly about?
A.How greatly air plooution affects our lives.
B.Effects of air pollution on bee populations.
C.Measures to fight air pollution.
D.The rapid decline of bee populations in the world.
57.According to the passage,Jay Evans probably agrees that ______ .
A.bees are the insect that suffers most from air pollution
B.bees are at risk of dying out owing to air pollution
C.the fading smell of flowers doesn't affect bees so greatly as was thought
D.as is often the case, bees fail to locate the flowers because of the missing scents
58.The word"exacerbate" in the last paragraph but one probably means ______.
A.worsen B.improve C.get rid of D.decrease
59.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A.The more air pollution there is in a region, the greater the destruction of the flower scents.
B.Bacteria, pesticides, and cellphone radiation are blamed for causing the decline of bees.
C.The scent molecules produced by flowers in a less polluted environment oculd travel longer and farther.
