In my work there are a lot of business trips, and what I hate about my job is eating alone. It always makes me feel lonely to see others laughing and talking. So, it was a better choice for me to have room service.

However, after enjoying room service for days at a hotel in Houston, I needed to get out of my room. Though the restaurant opened at 7:00, I arrived at 6:30. The waiter at the front desk made a comment about my “being there really early”. I explained my dislike of eating alone in restaurants. He then seated me at a lovely table and asked me whether I would mind if he sat down with me for a while.

How delighted I was! He sat and chatted with me about his career dreams and the difficulty of being at work on nights, weekends and holidays. He said he hadn’t enough time to be with his family. After 20 minutes, he saw some customers at the front desk and excused himself. I noticed that he stopped in the kitchen for a moment before he went to the front desk.

Then one after another waiter came out of the kitchen and had a wonderful chat with me. That night, three other waiters, even the cook, had come out of the kitchen and sat with me! About one hour later when I asked for my bill, all the people who had sat down with me came over in a big group to my table, and presented me with a red rose. And I was moved to tears! I grew up in Malaysia. Since we did not have many toys, we used rubber bands (橡皮筋) to make a jump rope. Three years ago, when my daughters Michelle and Theresa were 9 and 12 years old, they were making bracelets (手环) using rubber bands. It struck me that I knew how to do that. I like to impress my daughters and show them that their dad is cool, so I tried it too. To my surprise, I couldn’t work with the bands because my fingers were too big.

Since I studied engineering, I decided to come up with a solution (解决办法). I ran down to my basement and found a piece of wooden board, some pushpins and hooks (图钉和钩子). With the help of these things, I managed to make a bracelet. One of my daughters said, “Wow, that’s cool, but I can make it by hand.” So I started to put two, three, four, five rows together. I crossed the bands into diamond patterns using rainbow colors, which is how the Rainbow Loom (彩虹织机) got its name.

My daughters were so excited that they showed the bracelets to their friends. We started to get requests for them. But they were still difficult to make. I thought, “If I can make a small, easy-to-use loom, I’m onto something big.” It took six months and a lot of support from my kids to perfect the idea.

I tried to sell the loom by making videos about how to use it and taking my daughters to stores to show it. Many store owners thought it might be too difficult to use. For a year, we sold it only on our website. When it became popular with kids, it got noticed by toy stores.

It is so exciting that a simple idea my kids and I came up with together at our living-room table has become a nationwide fad.

1.The author tried to show his daughters how to make bracelets but _____.

A. was refused B. regretted

C. failed D. was misunderstood

2.The author made up his mind to find a method of _____.

A. making bracelets

B. using a jump rope

C. impressing his daughters

D. inventing the Rainbow Loom

3.The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 3 refers to _____.

A. looms B. bracelets

C. friends D. rainbows

4.What did store owners think of the author’s invention at first?

A. They thought highly of it.

B. They had a long wait for it.

C. They showed a great interest in it.

D. They thought there was no market for it.

On the first day of the 11th grade, our new math teacher Mr. Washington asked me to go to the blackboard to do a math problem. I told him that I couldn’t do it. He asked, “Why not?” I paused, and then I said, “Because I’m educable mentally retarded (可教育智能迟滞).”

He came from behind his desk and looked at me. “Don’t ever say that again. Someone’s opinion of you does not have to become your reality,” he said.

It was a very special moment for me. Doctors said that I was educable mentally retarded in the fifth grade, and I was put back into the fourth grade. When I was in the eighth grade, I failed again.

But Mr. Washington changed my life. This person always gave students the feeling that he had high expectations of them, and then all of the students did their best to live up to what those expectations were. He often said, “You have greatness within you.”

One day, I caught up with him in the parking place and said, “Mr Washington, is there greatness within me, sir?”

He said, “Yes, Mr Brown.”

“But what about the fact that I failed English, math, and history? What about that, sir? I’m slower than most kids.”

“It doesn’t matter. It just means that you have to work harder. Your grades don’t determine who you are or what you can produce in your life.”

“I want to buy my mother a house.”

“It is possible, Mr. Brown. You can do that.” And he turned to walk away.

“Mr. Washington?”

“What do you want now?”

“Uh, I’m the one, sir. One day you’re going to hear my name. I’m the one, sir.”

School was a real struggle for me. Mr. Washington put many demands on me. He made me believe that I could do it. At the end of that year, I was on the honor roll for the first time in my life.

Years later, I produced five programs on public television. When one of my programs was shown on the educational television channel, I had some friends call him. I was sitting by the phone waiting when he called me. He said, “May I speak to Mr. Brown, please?”

“Oh, Mr. Washington, is that you?”

“Yes, it’s me. You were the one, weren’t you?”

“Yes, sir, I was.”

1.What does Mr Washington mean by saying “Someone’s opinion of you does not have to become your reality”?

A. You needn’t have the same opinion as others.

B. You should believe what other people say.

C. What other people say about you may not be correct.

D. The doctor made a mistake.

2.What happened to the author at last?

A. He entered a good university.

B. He earned much honor.

C. He got a good job.

D. He made television programs.

3. In the passage, the author implies that ________.

A. people shouldn’t believe what doctors say

B. no one can be successful with hard work and confidence

C. no one is really educable mentally retarded

D. a good teacher can change a student’s life

4.The best title for the passage would be “________”.

A. Don’t Believe Others B. I Am the One

A dam is like a wall that is built across a waterway to control the flow of the water. For many years, dams were built only of earth and rocks.Today, many dams are built of concrete.

When a dam is built, water is trapped and held behind the dam. This water forms a lake. The lakes can be used for recreation or for irrigating,or watering crops. The lakes also provide potable water, water that is safe for drinking. This potable water is piped from the lake into houses and other buildings. The lake water further serves as a home,or habitat, for fish and waterfowl.

Dams are often built to provide flood control.Just before the rainy season, the water in the dam is allowed to flow out very slowly. This lowers the water level in the lake so that snowmelt and rainfall can be stored there in every spring and used as needed during the rest of the year.

Some dams are built to use the power of falling water to make electricity.Such dams have powerhouses that contain machines;turbines and generators.Water falls from the lake to the river below the dam.As the water falls,it is sent through the powerhouse. There, the force of the water turns the turbines and generators and produces electrical power needed to light and heat buildings.

We do not know when man first began to use salt, but we do know that it has been used in many different ways throughout history. Historical evidence shows, for example, that people who lived over 3,000 years ago ate salted fish. Thousands of years ago in Egypt, salt was used to preserve (保存) the dead.

Stealing salt was considered a major crime (罪行) during some periods of history. In the eighteenth century, for example, if a person was caught stealing salt, he could be put in prison and his ears could be cut off.

In the Roman Empire, one of the most important roads was the one that carried salt from the salt mines to Rome. Guards were stationed(安置) along the route to protect against salt thieves, and they received their pay in salt, thus bringing the English word, salary. Any guard who fell asleep while on duty was thought to be “not worth his salt”, and as a result he would get a little less salt on his next payday. The expression, “not worth his salt”, is still used today in English.

In the modern world salt has many uses beyond the dining table. It is used in making glass and airplane parts, in the growing of crops, and in the killing of weeds (杂草). It is also used to make water soft, to melt (融化) ice on roads and highways, to make soap, and to fix colors in cloth.

Salt can be got in various ways besides being taken from mines underground. Salt water from the ocean, salt water lakes or small seas can be used to make salt. Yet, no matter where it comes from, salt will continue to play an important role in the lives of people everywhere.

1.According to the text, salt can be used in the following EXCEPT _____.

A. keeping dead bodies

B. punishing thieves

C. protecting crops

D. making industrial products

2.In the Roman Empire many people were employed as guards to _____.

A. protect the city of Rome

B. watch people carrying salt

C. prevent thieves from stealing salt

D. carry salt from the mines to Rome

3.The expression “not worth his salt” used today refers to the one who _____.

A. fails to do his work well

B. should not be paid in salt

C. doesn’t want to work at all

D. should use less salt

4.The main purpose of the text is to tell readers _____.

A. how salt was found and got

B. salt is important in people’s life

C. salt was difficult to get in the past

D. what salt brings to the English language
